Champion jockey Oisin Murphy wins at Doncaster just a DAY after being charged with drink driving after 'serious road traffic collision' left a woman in hospital

Oisin Murphy was among the winners at Doncaster on Friday, with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) confirming the multiple champion jockey can continue to ride ahead of his court date next week. Murphy was charged on Thursday with two drink-driving offences following a car crash on April 27 which left a woman in her 20s in hospital with serious injuries. It is alleged that he was over the prescribed alcohol limit and failed to cooperate when asked to give a preliminary test at the scene. There has been little disruption to Murphy's schedule since he was arrested at the scene in Hermitage, Berkshire where a grey Mercedes A Class smashed into a tree just after midnight. The next day, he rode in five races at Windsor, picking up two wins and, last week, he had five winners at Royal Ascot. Given he is the reigning champion jockey — a title he has won four times since 2019 — Murphy is much in demand and his wins in the last two months have been for figures including Sir Alex Ferguson and Michael Owen, Lady Lloyd-Webber and leading bloodstock operations Cheveley Park and Juddmonte. On Friday, the BHA said there was nothing to prevent Murphy continuing to ride on an ongoing basis and he travelled to Doncaster for five mounts, winning the Doncaster Racecourse Supporting Racing Staff Week Handicap aboard the Andrew Balding-trained 8-13 favourite Displaying. The four-time champion is due to be in action at York on Saturday where his six booked mounts include Formal in the Group Three Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Criterion Stakes. Murphy, who leads the 2025 jockeys' championship by 17 from nearest rival William Buick, is due to appear at Reading Magistrates' Court on July 3. Murphy has not responded to requests for comment about the car crash since his arrest. Thames Valley Police said in a statement that: 'It is vital people do not speculate on social media as this is a live investigation.'

Oisin Murphy can continue riding while under charges for drink-driving

Oisin Murphy will be able to continue riding until at least his court appearance on drink-driving charges next week. The four-time champion jockey was in action at Doncaster on Friday and has six booked rides at York on Saturday, the most high-profile meeting since he was charged while at Royal Ascot last week. Murphy (29) has been charged with one count of driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed level of alcohol and one count of failing to co-operate with a preliminary test at the roadside after a collision in the early hours of Sunday, April 27th this year. He is due to appear at Reading magistrates court next Thursday. Oisin Murphy can continue riding while under charges for drink-driving

Oisin Murphy will be able to continue riding until at least his court appearance on drink-driving charges next week. The four-time champion jockey was in action at Doncaster on Friday and has six booked rides at York on Saturday, a meeting covered on ITV Racing and the most high-profile since he was charged while at Royal Ascot last week. Murphy, 29, has been charged with one count of driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed level of alcohol and one count of failing to cooperate with a preliminary test at the roadside after a collision in the early hours of Sunday 27 April this year. He is due to appear at Reading magistrates court next Thursday and it is understood the racing authorities, while monitoring developments, feel that nothing prevents the jockey riding at present and that the judicial process should be allowed to play out in the appropriate way. The big betting race on Saturday is the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle, the 10th running of the 'Pitmen's Derby' since the switch from turf to an artificial Tapeta surface in 2016, and while the move was controversial at the time, the race has maintained its status as one of the most popular and storied events in the Flat calendar. Trueshan's win for Hollie Doyle and Alan King under 10st 8lb in 2022 was one of the great weight-carrying performances of modern times, while Onesmoothoperator's success last year for Brian Ellison – who was born in Newcastle on 28 June 1952, the same day that Souepi landed a gamble in the Plate – fulfilled the trainer's lifetime ambition. Onesmoothoperator is back for another crack and has been kept fresh for Saturday's race after trips to Australia and Dubai over the winter, but top weight of 9st 12lb is a significant burden to overcome. East India Dock, the Chester Cup winner, is also prominent in the betting though unproven on the surface, while Willie Mullins's sole runner, Pappano, is making his Flat debut for the yard and has scope for progress off his current mark. There is little juice left in their current prices, however, and at the other end of the weights, Adrian McGuinness's Tribal Star (3.15) is of greater interest at around 10-1. He posted a useful effort to finish second to a highly progressive opponent in the Marathon event on All-Weather Finals day over Saturday's course and distance, has a draw in stall six that will suit his prominent running style and Jamie Powell's 3lb claim is also a bonus. Newcastle 1.40 Ed Walker's Arctic Thunder improved markedly from his stable debut when second under a considerate ride at Haydock last time and 12-1 in the early betting looks too big. York 1.55 The impeccably-bred Archivist was an easy winner at Leicester earlier this month and an opening mark of 90 could prove to be generous. Newcastle 2.10 Fast-improving Ferrous won in a strong time over track and trip in May and could make the most of the 7lb he received from Group One-winning Kind Of Blue. York 2.25 A drop in class for Lake Forest after his close fifth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot and while that was just 10 days ago, William Haggas's colt should take advantage. Newcastle 2.40 Contacto is making his all-weather debut but looked sure to come on for the run when finishing a close fourth at Goodwood in May. York 3.00 The rock-solid form here is Habooba's track-and-trip win in May and she can follow up off a 6lb higher mark. Newcastle 3.45 A 6lb penalty is unlikely to trouble Rare Change as he bids to follow up an emphatic success at Pontefract on Sunday.

Reform wins Sheffield Council by-election in Stocksbridge and Don

Reform UK has won its first seat on Sheffield City Council following a tightly contested by-election. John Booker took the Stocksbridge and Don ward after a vote was trigged by the resignation of Julie Grocutt in secured 1,789 votes, with the Liberal Democrats second on 1,597 and Labour coming third with 1,324 win follows on from Reform's success in neighbouring Doncaster, when the party took two thirds of the council's seats in the recent local elections. Booker, a former UKIP councillor in Sheffield's West Ecclesfield ward, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service his party had "galvanised public opinion"."I think the Labour Party is going the way of the Conservative Party," he said."I'm happy that we've now got an alternative voice in Sheffield City Council, which it needed for a long time."I believe in common sense, which has left this building and it needs to come back." 'Challenging election' Liberal Democrat group leader Martin Smith said his party's candidate, Stuart Shepherd, had "nearly quadrupled our vote share in 15 months"."It's a real shame he didn't get in this time but he's been a great candidate and I'm sure his time will come," he and Labour group leader Tom Hunt said: "The national background always meant this was going to be a challenging election. "It's much easier for some parties who only have to stand on the sidelines – being in government means you have to take decisions."Results in full - candidates names listed in alphabetical orderAdam James Allcroft, Yorkshire Party, 58 votesJohn Booker, Reform UK, 1,789Andy Davies, Green Party, 294Matt Dixon, Conservative Party, 332Josiah Tomasz Lenton, Labour Party, 1,324Stuart Shepherd, Liberal Democrats, 1,597Claire Suzanne Wraith, Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition,43 votesTurnout: 5,437 votes (36.8%)

Horse racing tips: ‘He won this race two years ago off a similar mark' – Templegate's Friday NAP

TEMPLEGATE takes on Friday's action confident of building the bank for a decent weekend of action. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. VINTAGE CLARETS (7.35 Newcastle, nap) Richard Fahey's flyer shaped like he was back in form at Epsom last time and won this race two seasons back from a similar mark. He has the high draw you so often need at this track over the sprint trips and being towards the rail can be a big help. There aren't many better apprentices around than Warren Fentiman and he takes a very handy 5lb off his back. NOVELLO LAD (3.55 Doncaster, nb). Oisin Murphy takes over in the saddle and he has won three of last four rides for canny trainer Paul Midgley. This four-year-old was just denied over this track and trip last time when hitting a bit of traffic and can go one better this time with conditions spot on again. DIAMOND RAIN (7.05 Newcastle, treble) Looks a sure thing for team Godolphin. She was a cut above her rivals in a Listed race last time and this doesn't look much trickier. Charlie Appleby didn't have the best of Royal Ascot's but his string continues to fly along in great nick. THE FEMININE URGE (2.00 Yarmouth, Lucky 15) She never had a chance at Wolves last time but was in flying form beforehand and this looks well within her radar.
