Drink-driving style breathalyser could help detect blood cancer in just minutes
'Doctors may be able to conduct a quick breath test in their clinic room and potentially have the results within a few seconds,' one expert said LIFE-SAVER Drink-driving style breathalyser could help detect blood cancer in just minutes DRINK-DRIVING style breathalysers could help detect when users have blood cancer, scientists claim. They say the test could spot the disease earlier, giving patients a better shot at beating it. Advertisement 2 It's the first time a breathalyser-like device has been used to diagnosed blood cancer Credit: Owlstone Medical Study author Dr John Riches, from Queen Mary University of London, said: "Doctors may be able to conduct a quick breath test in their clinic room and potentially have the results within a few seconds." The gadget works by analysing chemicals in exhaled breath, just like a roadside breath test for booze. The experts from Queen Mary University of London found people with blood cancer breathe out different molecules to healthy people. They used Breath Biopsy® technology, developed by Owlstone Medical, to test 46 patients with blood cancer and 28 healthy people. Advertisement Previous studies have found that similar devices can detect lung cancer. This is the first time breathalyser-like devices have been found to also spot blood cancer. Blood cancer is the UK's fifth most common cancer and the third biggest cancer killer. Over 40,000 people are diagnosed with the disease each year while around 16,000 die. It is also the most common type of childhood cancer. Every year, more than 500 children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with blood cancer in the UK. Advertisement The study, published in HemaSphere, showed those with high-grade lymphoma - an aggressive form of blood cancer - had significantly increased levels of certain molecules in their breath. These included signs of oxidative stress, a type of cell damage linked to cancer development. Blood cancer symptoms and signs Diagnosis of blood cancers often relies on scans or biopsies, which can be costly or difficult to access, especially in rural or low-resource settings. The researchers reckon the breathalyser offers a simpler, cheaper alternative that could eventually be used in GP surgeries or clinics without specialist equipment. Advertisement Their new aim is to develop the test further, improving its accuracy and reducing the time it takes, from ten minutes to just a few seconds. They also hope to find out which types of blood cancer are most reliably detected this way, to develop a more targeted and sensitive version of the test. 2

'Best lash serum ever' with over 50K reviews has shoppers ditching false lashes
Shoppers can get the UKLash product for less when subscribing Thousands of shoppers are swearing by the 'best lash serum ever' and there's a way to get it for less. UKLash's Eyelash Enhancing Serum typically costs £38 but drops down to £30.40 when subscribing. The serum uses a number of ingredients to fortify lashes. Biotin peptide is used for its role in processing fatty acids and boosting their effectiveness which leads to stronger and fuller lashes. Green tea is also used for soothing skin and helping lashes grow. Panthenol, also known as vitamin B5, repairs, protects and nourishes the hair follicle while Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 is used for stimulating the production of Keratin - a viral protein for lash growth. There are other serums on the market, such as the £27 RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum which has 585 five-star reviews on LookFantastic and Glow For It's £29.99 Lash Growth Serum. The latter has 1,175 reviews although it's hard to compete with the thousands on UKLash. UKLash's serum has pulled in an average rating of 4.8 out of five from over 51,000 reviews online. One shopper said: "I had little to no lashes when I started using this, not because of my lash extensions, but simply due to genetics. I've never had long, full lashes. After two months of consistent use, this serum absolutely works. I started noticing real results around the 4- to 6-week mark, definite length and even some volume improvement. "Of course, results can vary from person to person, but this has been a game-changer for me. I couldn't be happier with the difference it's made!" Another shopper wrote: " Best lash serum ever. I have been using this since early April (it's now May) and I have NOT gone back to lashes since, I used to never be able to go out the house without clusters and now all I have to do is chuck a little bit of mascara on and I'm set, this has had such fast results I'm genuinely in love! Please take this as your sign to cop!" One shopper found the serum a little uncomfortable to use, writing: "A little disappointed by how they make my eyes feel! I should have gotten the sensitive eye version since whenever I use it, my eyes get red and a bit stingy." There is a Sensitive Lash Growth Serum that has proven popular with shoppers although it has around 700 reviews rather than the thousands on the classic serum.
