Missouri factory worker found dead inside industrial oven, police say

A Guatemalan national working under an alias was found dead inside an industrial oven at a cereal plant in Missouri last week, authorities say.
Nicolas Lopez Gomez, 38, who was working under the name Edward Avila, was located by officers, emergency medical services personnel and firefighters, the Perryville Police Department said.
Officers were sent to the Gilster-Mary Lee Perryville Cereal Plant for a man "stuck in an industrial oven that was shut down," police said. By the time they got to Gomez, he was already dead.
The Perry County coroner was called in shortly after to assist.

"OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] has been contacted concerning this accident and will be conducting its investigation," Perry County Coroner Meghan Ellis said in a statement. "Our offices will work with them to determine how this occurred."
Fox News Digital reached out to both the OSHA and the Gilster-Mary Lee Corporation for comment, but neither immediately responded.

Gilster-Mary Lee Corporation operates 11 locations across three Midwestern states, its website says. The company has been in operation for 125 years, manufacturing "safe, quality food products" that are sold under private labels and by food service companies.
In Perryville, the company's cereal and mix plants are right across the street from each other on Old St. Mary's Road, Google Maps shows. Print Close

One person dead after North York encampment fire: Toronto fire chief
One person is dead after a fire at an encampment site in the city's north end early Thursday morning, officials said. Toronto fire chief Jim Jessop said emergency crews responded to a report of a fire near Credit Union Drive in North York just after 4 a.m. Jessop said when firefighters arrived, they encountered a 'significant fire' with flames reported to be 30 to 40 feet tall. Crews had to go down into a steep embankment in the Don Valley, he said. Like numerous other North American cities, first responders have been dealing with these types of situations for years, he said. 'We do our best to prepare them. They're well aware of the risks of encampment fires,' he said. Jessop said he's been in touch with Toronto's shelter and support services to help those living in the valley. He added Toronto Fire Services has its own outreach team that connects to all encampments officials are aware of and encourages individuals to access indoor shelter and supports. Jessop said firefighters, the provincial fire marshal and city police will investigate the cause and circumstances behind the blaze. French foreign minister denounces spy charges against couple imprisoned in Iran
PARIS (AP) — France's foreign minister denounced spy charges reportedly being used to hold two French nationals in Iran for more than three years, saying the allegations are 'unjustified and unfounded.' French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Thursday said France had not been formerly notified by Iranian authorities of the charges against French citizens Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, which reportedly include spying for Israel. If confirmed, France would consider the charges 'totally unjustified and unfounded,' Barrot said, calling for the couple's 'immediate, unconditional release.' Kohler, 40, and her partner Paris, 72, were arrested in May 2022 and until last month were detained at Tehran's Evin Prison, known for holding dual nationals and Westerners who are used by Iran as bargaining chips in diplomatic negotiations. A French diplomat was able to meet the pair earlier this week as their families demanded proof they were alive following recent Israeli strikes on the prison . Kohler's sister, Noemie Kohler, said in an interview broadcast Thursday on BFM TV that the couple were told they had been charged with spying for Israel, conspiracy to overthrow the Iranian regime and 'corruption on Earth.' 'Our understanding … is that they face death penalty,' she said. 'We're really extremely worried about their psychological state and the trauma of the bombings.' The visit by the French diplomat took place at a prison south of Tehran but, like some other prisoners , Kohler and Paris were transferred from Evin following the Israeli strikes and their location is unknown, Noemie Kohler said.
