Worker dies after getting 'trapped' in huge oven as horrified staff beg for help
Missouri factory worker Nicolas Lopez Gomez, 38, was working at the Glister Marylee Cereal Plant on Thursday when he suddenly became stuck inside an industrial oven A cereal factory worker was killed inside an industrial oven after he became "trapped" following a horrifying accident, according to police. Nicolas Lopez Gomez, who worked under the name Edward Avilawas, died while working at the Glister Marylee Cereal Plant in Perryville, Missouri, when he suddenly became stuck inside a huge oven last Thursday. According to authorities, the 38-year-old was power-washing the machine from the outside when he ended up inside the oven. Horrified co-workers quickly called emergency services after realising Gomez was trapped. However, less than 20 minutes after emergency services arrived, he was tragically pronounced dead. Police said it is unclear how Gomez became stuck in the oven. Foul play is not suspected. The oven wasn't running at the time of the horrific accident, so it is unclear what injuries the worker may have suffered. The Glister Marylee factory makes cereals with popular suppliers such as Walmart, Sam's Club, and Albertsons. The tragic death comes just eight months after the remains of Gursimran Kaur, 19, were tragically found inside the walk-in oven of the Walmart she worked at in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her body was discovered on October 19 by her devastated mum, who had become concerned after she had been missing for over an hour. Kaur's mum went to the bakery section to try to find her daughter when a colleague noticed a "leakage" coming from the walk-in oven. Tragically, when the mum opened the door, she discovered her daughter's charred remains. Emergency services were called to the store where they confirmed Kaur had died inside the oven. 'Gursimran Kaur was only 19 years old, a young beautiful girl who came to Canada with big dreams,' a spokesperson for the family said in a GoFundMe appeal. "Imagine the horror that her mother experienced - who herself opened the oven. As you all know, her charred remains were found inside the walk-in oven in the bakery after a few hours." The store remained shut throughout the investigation as it conducted renovations - including removing all walk-in ovens. Now, police have concluded their investigation, which was initially called "complex". "The police investigation determined the death is not suspicious and there is no evidence of foul play", said the Halifax Police Department said. "Investigators met with family to share this update and extend condolences. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time." Police did not indicate a cause or manner of death. Gursimran was a member of the local Sikh community, having lived in Canada for around three years. 'Our deepest thoughts remain with the family and our associates as they continue to grieve,' Walmart Canada spokesperson Amanda Moss told USA Today.

Factory worker dies 'trapped' in industrial oven in horrifying accident
A Missouri factory worker suffered a horrific death after getting stuck inside an industrial oven. Nicolas Lopez Gomez, 38, a Guatemalan national who worked under the alias Edward Avila, died while cleaning the massive oven at the Gilster Marylee Cereal Plant in Perryville on Thursday around 3pm, police said. He was reportedly power washing the machine from the outside. It is unclear how Gomez ended up lodged inside the turned-off oven, but authorities do not suspect foul play. Panicked co-workers urgently dialed 911 to try to save him once they realized he was trapped. But less than 20 minutes after first responders arrived, the Perry County Coroner was called to the scene and Gomez was pronounced dead, KSDK reported. The coroner's office is working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to investigate the harrowing incident. Gilster-Mary Lee Corporation, a private food label manufacturer, has operated for 125 years and has 11 locations across Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas, according to its website. Gomez's unsettling death comes eight months after a teen working at a Canadian Walmart was baked to death inside a walk-in oven. Gursimran Kaur's charred remains were found by her mother inside a bakery oven of a the store she worked at in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 19. The mother and her 19-year-old daughter had been living in Canada for about three years and worked at Walmart together. The pair had moved from India, where Kaur's brother and father remain. On the day of the deadly incident, her mother could not find her for over an hour, with her phone unusually turned off and unreachable. Then, a bakery section employee pointed out a 'leakage' from inside the walk-in oven - which led Kaur's mother to make the gut-wrenching discovery of her burned-to-death daughter. By the time emergency responders arrived at the scene, Kaur had died inside the industrial oven. Police ruled out foul play in November, but the store was closed until February 3 for renovations. 'It's great to have our customers and our associates back in the store,' Nick Ritcey with Walmart Canada's corporate affairs told CBC at the time. 'Obviously the tragedy is still top of mind and it's something that will be sad forever.' After police said the Halifax store could reopen, Walmart confirmed they would remove the walk-in oven. Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss told the National Post: 'This is an extremely sad and difficult situation. 'Removing the oven had always been part of the standard remodel program we are implementing across the country. 'Now that the stop-work order has been lifted by the Department of Labor, the oven will be removed from this store and will no longer be used.'
