A man is dead after being hit by passing vehicle on Highway 401 in Etobicoke early Saturday morning after he was involved in a collision with a tractor trailer, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say.
The incident happened around 5 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Dixon Road, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a video posted on X.
An SUV and a tractor trailer were involved in a collision, he said. The driver of the SUV exited the vehicle and was then struck by another passing vehicle.
The driver was taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead, Schmidt said. Two other people were also taken to hospital.
Highway 401 eastbound is closed at the transfer lanes approaching Highway 427, he said. Drivers will be redirected either to Renforth Drive or Highway 427 north or south.
Drivers travelling on Highway 427 northbound will have no access to Highway 401 eastbound.
Westbound lines of Highway 401 are unaffected.
Schmidt said it will take "some time" until the highway reopens.
Officers are slowly working on turning around drivers who are stuck in a closure between Eglinton Avenue E. and the collision scene, he said.
