On the run for 25 years: When law fails to catch up with 800 POs
In the past 30 days alone, 23 POs were arrested, marking the beginning of an aggressive and focused campaign to bring long-absconding criminals to justice.
These POs — accused in cases ranging from cheating, robbery, theft, accidents, assaults, extortion, and fights — either jumped bail or stopped attending court hearings and continued to live normal lives in parts of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and even abroad.
Taking serious note of the backlog, Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans constituted a special committee comprising SP (operations), DSP, and ASIs, tasked with identifying, tracking, and apprehending these offenders.
"After assuming charge, I reviewed our PO list and realised the urgency to act. We formed a dedicated team to compile data, verify case statuses, and initiate arrests," said SSP Hans.

SP (detective) Saurav Jindal, heading the data compilation effort, stated that the team worked diligently to track down offenders and initiate the legal process. DSP Naveen Pal Singh Lehal added that several of the arrested individuals were found to have jumped bail, while others were already serving sentences in different cases — in such cases, production warrants were obtained to bring them under trial for pending charges.
Some POs, however, fled the country, making their arrest more complex. "During our investigation, we found that fraud accused Preet Brar and his brother Amrit Brar, involved in a Rs 51 lakh cheating case, escaped to Canada. Similarly, Gaurav Kumar, accused in a journalist's murder, is now in Uttar Pradesh, and the wife of Armenia-based gangster Gaurav Padial has also reportedly left for Canada," the DSP added.

Delhi woman, boyfriend arrested for husband's murder as police crack year-old case
Delhi Police have arrested a woman and her boyfriend for allegedly planning and carrying out the murder of her husband and disposing of his body in a drain in Haryana's Sonipat, an official said on arrested persons have been identified as 34-year-old Soniya, a resident of Alipur in Delhi, and her 28-year-old boyfriend Rohit from Sonipat. Another accused in the case, Vijay, is to police, the motive behind the murder was the ongoing relationship between Soniya and Rohit, along with the alleged abusive and criminal behaviour of the victim. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said the victim, 42-year-old Pritam Prakash, had more than 10 criminal cases against him and had been declared a proclaimed offender by a Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said, "The victim, Pritam Prakash (42), was a known history-sheeter in Alipur. He had more than 10 cases registered against him, including those under the Arms Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. He had also been declared a proclaimed offender by the court."On July 5, 2024, Pritam had gone to pick up Soniya from her sister's house in Gannaur, Sonipat. After an argument, Pritam left the house but later returned and pleaded with her, Soniya let him stay in the house. That day, Soniya allegedly offered Rs 50,000 to Vijay, her sister's brother-in-law, to kill that night, while Soniya was sleeping on the terrace, Vijay allegedly killed Pritam and disposed of his body in a drain near Agwanpur. Police said Vijay recorded a video of the body and sent it to Soniya via social media, but the video was later July 20, Soniya filed a missing person complaint at Alipur Police Station, claiming her husband had gone out and never case initially did not show any signs of foul play, but investigators grew suspicious after noticing no financial or digital activity from Pritam for later tracked a mobile number linked to Pritam that had become active again after nearly a year. Surveillance led them to Rohit in questioning, Rohit at first misled the police but later admitted to the said Rohit confessed to being in a relationship with Soniya and said they had planned the murder together. He also said Soniya had allegedly paid Vijay to carry out the the same time, Haryana Police had recovered an unidentified male body from the area, but were unable to identify it. The case remained unsolved until Delhi Police linked the details nearly a year to police, Soniya later sold Pritam's auto-rickshaw for Rs 4.5 lakh and gave his mobile phone to Rohit. DNA samples collected during the Haryana post-mortem will now be used to confirm the identity of the said Soniya married Pritam when she was around 15 years old, against the wishes of their families. They later accepted the marriage, and the couple had three children, including a 16-year-old son and two daughters."The marriage was never reported to the police by the families, who later accepted the couple. Cops seize over 500 kg ganja in 2 separate raids, 6 held
Visakhapatnam: In two separate operations, Andhra Pradesh police seized large quantities of dry cannabis being smuggled from Odisha to Tamil Nadu and Kerala and arrested six accused while launching a hunt for several others involved in smuggling the contraband. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the first case, the Anakapalle district police, with the support of EAGLE personnel, seized 370 kgs of dry cannabis and arrested four members of a seven-member gang near Rachapalle of Makavarapalem mandal. The gang was transporting the contraband in two cars from Odisha to Tamil Nadu via Andhra Pradesh. Though the seized ganja was procured for about Rs 20 lakh in Odisha, it is estimated to be worth over Rs 1 crore in some metro cities. Based on a tip-off, the Narsipatnam rural police team led by inspector L Revathamma and Makavarapalem sub-inspector P Damodhar Naidu carried out vehicle checks in the area. Upon spotting the police teams, six individuals in two cars and two on a scooter attempted to flee, but the police managed to apprehend four of them. The investigation revealed that all eight involved are natives of parts of the Anakapalle district. A manhunt is on to nab the remaining accused. In a separate incident, Vizianagaram police arrested two inter-state drug peddlers and seized around 145 kg of dry cannabis while they were transporting the weed from Odisha to Kerala via L Kota in Andhra Pradesh. The arrested have been identified as Dambu Siragam, alias Krishna (21), a native of Koraput district in Odisha, and Mohammed Shefeek (36), a native of Khasaragod district in Kerala. Based on a tip-off, L Kota police carried out a raid near Golzam junction and intercepted an SUV heading towards Vizag city. Police found 145 kg of dry cannabis in 70 packets wrapped with brown plastic tape. During interrogation, Shefeek confessed that he had purchased the weed from Siragam and was transporting it to Siddhiq in Kerala. He also revealed that Siddhiq had visited Padua in Odisha and directed him to transport the consignment. Jindal stated that the police have intensified vehicle checks at strategic points to curb the transport of cannabis from Odisha to other parts of the country via Vizianagaram. Officials said inter-state cannabis peddlers are sourcing the contraband from villages along the Andhra-Odisha border, especially from Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Kandhamal districts of Odisha.
