‘Mozart Mozart': New Series Puts Composer's Forgotten Sister Center Stage (Exclusive Trailer)
Bavaria Media and Beta Film have joined forces on Mozart Mozart, a six-hour drama that reimagines the legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through the eyes of his (real-life) sister, Maria Anna Mozart. The series, from the creators of German costume drama hit Sisi, has received a first-season commission from German public broadcaster ARD and Austria's ORF. When Wolfgang, played by Eren M. Güvercin (Druck, Eldorado), proves too volatile to secure favor at the court of Emperor Joseph II, Maria Anna disguises herself as her brother, captivating Vienna's elite and drawing the envy of Mozart's rival, Antonio Salieri. Her deception grows increasingly complex as she attempts to maintain the ruse, protect her family's reputation and navigate her relationship with Salieri. The series stands apart from the upcoming English-language series Amadeus, which Sky has commissioned in the U.K., and will see White Lotus actor Will Sharpe play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. That drama is a reimagining of Peter Shaffer's 1979 stage play Amadeus, which inspired Milos Forman's 1984 Oscar-winning adaptation. 'What we definitely didn't want to do was a remake of Amadeus,' Mozart Mozart showrunner Andreas Gutzeit, who created the series and co-wrote it with Swantje Oppermann (Dignity), tells The Hollywood Reporter. 'The desire is to tell a new story for a younger audience, and to tell the forgotten story of Maria Anna, who was a musical genius of her own, perhaps as talented, or more so, than her superstar brother.' 'Mozart's sister isn't a secret, but we don't know much about her life, other than she was also a child prodigy and that she and Amadeus toured together to every royal court in Europe at the time,' notes Clara Zoë My-Linh von Arnim, who is directing the series. 'But she had the misfortune of being a woman and then, when she turned a marriageable age, she was dragged off the stage, in the truest sense of the word. There is a lot of speculation on how big her influence was on Amadeus' music, on his compositions, over the years.' Jessica De Rooij, who composed the award-winning music for Sisi, is back for Mozart Mozart, giving Mozart's iconic compositions a contemporary edge for the show. Gutzeit and Jens Freels (Dignity) serve as executive producers, with Simona Weber producing. The ensemble cast includes Eidin Jalali (The Swarm, Maxton Hall), Verena Altenberger (Wild Republic), Peter Kurth (Babylon Berlin), Philipp Hochmair (Freud), Sonja Weisser (Maxton Hall), Lisa Vicari (Next Level) and Annabelle Mandeng (Vikings: Valhalla). Crunchyroll blames third-party vendor for AI subtitle mess
At the start of last year, Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini told The Verge the company was "very focused on testing" generative AI tools for subtitling and captioning speech to text. The comment came just months after the streamer temporarily took down the debut episode of one of its newest shows, The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons, after people complained about poor subtitles. Much of the translation was nonsensical, with missing punctuation in many sentences. At the time, some fans speculated the company had used AI to translate the episode. Earlier this week, fresh accusations of AI use came up when an episode of new anime showed evidence ChatGPT was used to write the subtitles. Igor Bonifacic for Engadget On July 1, Bluesky user Pixel spotted an issue with the German subtitles for Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show , one of the new series Crunchyroll is streaming this anime season. Beyond a general sloppiness, one line began with the words "ChatGPT said..." during a pivotal scene in the show's debut episode. Engadget was able to independently verify the episode contains the AI-generated translation. If you're curious, the English subtitles aren't much better, as seen in the screenshots above and below. "We were made aware that AI-generated subtitles were employed by a third-party vendor, which is in violation of our agreement," a Crunchyroll spokesperson told Engadget. "We are investigating the matter and are working to rectify the error." People were understandably upset about the subtitles. Crunchyroll subscriptions start at $8 per month, and since its acquisition by Sony, service has been the dominant player in the anime streaming market outside of Japan. "This is not acceptable. How can we be expected to pay for a service that clearly doesn't care about the quality of its products?" wrote Pixel in their original post. As of the writing of this article, their post has been quoted more than 300 times and reposted by thousands of other people. Many fans say they're turning to torrented fansubs, calling the official AI-generated translations "unwatchable." People on Reddit have expressed similar frustrations. Ironically, when Purini revealed Crunchyroll was testing generative AI tools for subtitles, he said part of the motivation was to prevent piracy. He reasoned the tech would allow the company to start streaming new, translated anime episodes as close to their original Japanese release as possible, adding the lag between official releases was sometimes what pushed fans to torrent shows. Police investigate Bob Vylan over ‘death to IDF' call at gig before Glastonbury
Punk duo Bob Vylan are being investigated by police after allegedly calling for 'death to every single IDF soldier out there' at a concert one month before Glastonbury. The pair are already being investigated by Avon and Somerset Police over their controversial appearance at Worthy Farm when rapper Bobby Vylan led crowds in chants of 'death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)' during their livestreamed performance at the Somerset music festival last weekend. In video footage, Bobby Vylan, whose real name is reportedly Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, appears to be at Alexandra Palace telling crowds: 'Death to every single IDF soldier out there as an agent of terror for Israel. Death to the IDF.' The pair had supported Iggy Pop at the London venue on his tour on May 28, a month before Glastonbury. A Met Police spokesperson said on Wednesday: 'Officers are investigating comments allegedly made during a concert at Alexandra Palace earlier this year. 'The decision to investigate follows the emergence of footage which appears to have been filmed at the venue on 28 May 2025.' It is not clear when the investigation was launched. The probe comes after it was revealed Bob Vylan will no longer play Radar festival in Manchester The duo were due to headline the Saturday slot but no longer appear in the line-up. A statement posted on Radar festival's Instagram account said: 'Bob Vylan will not be appearing at Radar festival this weekend.' It has since updated its website, changing the Saturday slot to 'Headliner TBA' (to be announced). In response, the group shared the festival's statement on their Instagram story, adding the caption: 'Silence is not an option. We will be fine, the people of Palestine are hurting. Manchester we will be back.' The BBC has also faced criticism for livestreaming the set and has since apologised, describing the chants as 'antisemitic sentiments' that were 'unacceptable'. It later emerged BBC director-general Tim Davie was at Glastonbury while the performance was being livestreamed. A BBC spokesperson said: 'The director-general was informed of the incident after the performance and at that point he was clear it should not feature in any other Glastonbury coverage.' On Monday, the group were banned from entering the US, ahead of their tour, with deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau revoking the duo's visas for their 'hateful tirade at Glastonbury'. They have also been pulled from their upcoming performance at a German music venue. Bob Vylan are expected to perform at the Boardmasters surfing and music festival in Newquay, Cornwall, in August.
