Officials interact with villagers of Devalampeta ST Colony regarding DA-JGUA initiative

The Hindu04-06-2025
The Chittoor district administration conducted a gram sabha at the ST Colony of Devalampeta village in Jagamarla panchayat of Palamaner mandal, on Wednesday. They interacted with the villagers regarding the implementation of the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA), a national-level initiative launched by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs on October 2, 2024.
District Tribal Welfare and Empowerment officer S. Murthy, Groundwater Department deputy director Govardhan Reddy, along with senior officials of the Skill Development and Fisheries Department, took part in the programme. They highlighted the need for coordination among departments to ensure all government welfare schemes reach tribal areas promptly.
Devalampeta ST Colony, with a total of 194 households, of which 110 are tribal, was chosen under the DA-JGUA initiative to ensure focused and sustainable rural development. The initiative aims at offering access to health, education, basic infrastructure, and livelihood opportunities for the tribal population. Mr. Murthy urged the departments of DRDA, Education, Health, Women and Child Welfare, Panchayat Raj, Rural Water Supply, Electricity, Agriculture, Telecom, and Employment to frequently conduct field visits and fix the problem areas.
Meanwhile, the villagers brought to the notice of the officials key issues faced by them, such as lack of safe drinking water, absence of a drainage system, lack of anganwadis, Aadhaar cards, and inability to obtain bank loans for the purchase of cattle and sheep.
In reply, the officials informed the residents that a detailed project report (DPR) for water and drainage works had been submitted to the district authorities, while a mini anganwadi centre had already been sanctioned.

Owaisi slams ‘pant utaaro' Aadhaar checks at UP eateries ahead of Kanwar Yatra: ‘This filth must stop'

AIMIM chief and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi has hit out at the Uttar Pradesh administration and police for allowing vigilante groups to harass hotel staff near Muzaffarnagar during the Kanwar Yatra, questioning why they are being allowed to operate as a 'parallel government.' AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi addresses a press conference on voter revision, in Hyderabad, Wednesday, July 2, 2025. He also criticised vigilante groups harassing eatery owners along the Kanwar Yatra route.(PTI) Referring to recent reports of men being forced to remove their pants to 'prove their religion' along the Delhi-Dehradun highway, Owaisi said that areas like Baghonwali, Sarwat, and Bajheri near the Muzaffar Nagar bypass have seen peaceful pilgrimages for over a decade, but things have drastically changed. 'There are hotels in those villages that have been operating peacefully for years,' he said. 'Why is it that 10–11 years ago, there were no such incidents, and now people are being pulled out, asked for Aadhaar cards, and even forced to strip if they fail to show one? Who are these vigilantes? Is the government running the state, or have these groups taken over?' In his sharp criticism, Owaisi asked what authority these individuals had to storm into hotels and question staff. 'Who gave you the right to enter a hotel and ask someone their name or demand their Aadhaar card? Are you the police? Are you the law? Are you the government?' he said, referencing a Supreme Court order prohibiting such harassment, which he said is still in force. 'They went to the hotel and asked for the Aadhaar card of the owner. When they didn't get it, they said, 'pant utaaro' — 'take off your pants'. Kya hai yeh gandagi? — 'What kind of filth is this?' This filth must stop. If the police won't act, these people will keep behaving like they're the superior government. Our demand is simple: follow the rule of law,' Owaisi said. Vigilantes force eatery staff to 'prove' religion His remarks come in the backdrop of reports from Muzaffarnagar where followers of controversial seer Swamy Yashveer Maharaj allegedly forced roadside eatery workers and hotel staff to prove their religion by lowering their pants. The vigilante group, reportedly part of a self-styled outfit called the Bharatiya Sanatan Suraksha Dal, has been accused of repeatedly targeting establishments run by minority communities during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra. The Supreme Court, on July 22 last year, issued an interim order staying the Uttar Pradesh government's directive that mandated shopkeepers along Kanwar Yatra routes to display their names. The court clarified that owners are only required to mention the type of food served at their establishments. During the hearing, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that the state's order had no legal basis and described it as a 'camouflage order.' The order came in response to a directive issued by Muzaffarnagar Police last year, which required all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners on signboards. The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government later expanded this directive statewide, with the governments of Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh adopting similar measures. However, the move drew strong criticism not only from the Opposition but also from several NDA allies, including the Janata Dal (United) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

Appreciate enhanced measures to strengthen Aadhaar issuance process in Manipur: Biren Singh

Imphal, Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday asserted the urgent need for strict verification mechanisms and close coordination between Aadhaar issuing authorities, ILP enforcement agencies, and local administrative bodies to ensure that identity documents are issued only to those who are rightfully entitled. Appreciate enhanced measures to strengthen Aadhaar issuance process in Manipur: Biren Singh In a post on X, Singh wrote: "I appreciate the enhanced measures undertaken by the State Government to strengthen and streamline the Aadhaar issuance process in Manipur. These efforts are critical to safeguarding our integrity and identity." Singh's remark came a day after the state adopted one of the most stringent processes for issuing Aadhaar cards to adults aimed at ensuring robust scrutiny and enhanced security in line with the Ministry of Home Affairs and UIDAI guidelines. Officials said, "Each case of adult Aadhaar has to be mandatorily scrutinised and approved only at the level of state HQ in the office of Special Secretary ." According to Singh, it is equally important to remember that Manipur is a state where the ILP system is in place to regulate the entry and stay of non-residents. "The Aadhaar issuance process and all related matters must always adhere to the provisions of the ILP to prevent unauthorised settlements and protect the rights of the indigenous population," he said in the post. Citing past cases in which non-Manipur citizens have resided in the state using questionable documents, Singh said, "According to a media report, one late Nehginpao Kipgen, who was born in Teijang, Myanmar in 1975, but later came to Manipur for education, went on to study in other parts of the country and abroad, and lived as an Indian citizen." "This is a classic example of how the origins of certain individuals were never seriously questioned in this part of the country, and over time, they freely and covertly became citizens of India through unchecked processes," Singh added. Singh also referred to another case involving a professor of Hyderabad University and his family, whose names appeared in the electoral records of Churachandpur for the first time in 2005, with no trace of them in earlier records. His case was known when the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, ordered the police to carry out a detailed investigation to verify his citizenship status, he added. "Such lapses must not be allowed. There is an urgent need for strict verification mechanisms and close coordination between Aadhaar issuing authorities, ILP enforcement agencies, and local administrative bodies to ensure that identity documents are issued only to those who are rightfully entitled. This is not just an administrative issue but a matter of national security, Singh added. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Supreme Court seeks enquiry report from A.P. Government on illegal mining scam involving ex-MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) directed the State of Andhra Pradesh to submit, in a sealed cover, its inquiry report into an alleged illegal mining scam involving former Gannavaram MLA and YSR Congress Party leader Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan. The direction was issued by a Bench led by Justice M.M. Sundresh while hearing a petition filed by the State challenging a May 29 order of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which had granted anticipatory bail to Mr. Mohan in connection with the case. Also read: A.P. Government constitutes SIT to investigate cases against former MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi The Bench agreed to hear the State's petition in detail on July 17. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for the State, submitted that the government had not been granted a proper opportunity to present its case. He said Mr. Mohan was the 'kingpin' of a 'largescale mining scam' and that his custodial interrogation was necessary, citing allegations that he had threatened witnesses. When Justice Sundresh observed that the complaint appeared 'barebones' and lacked material particulars, Mr. Luthra responded that the inquiry report prepared by the State's Vigilance and Enforcement Department was exhaustive. The Bench then directed the State to place the report on record in a sealed cover. Also read: A.P. Police search for former MLA Vamsi's mobile phone According to the State's petition, the largescale illegal mining scam was uncovered through a comprehensive enquiry by the Vigilance and Enforcement Department. The illegal activities allegedly took place between 2019 and 2024 across Gannavaram, Bapulapadu, and Vijayawada Rural mandals. The State submitted that Mr. Mohan, during his tenure as MLA, had misused his office and conspired with associates to orchestrate a sophisticated racket involving the fraudulent procurement and misuse of temporary mining permits. The petition claimed that mining permits were obtained using forged documents, including PAN and Aadhaar details of unsuspecting civilians who had been misled into submitting their identity proofs under the pretext of enrollment in government welfare schemes. Further, legal procedures were allegedly bypassed to extract gravel and building stone, with complaints by local police and revenue authorities being suppressed due to Mr. Mohan's political influence. 'The total wrongful loss to the public exchequer due to these fraudulent mining activities has been calculated to be ₹195.04 crore,' the State's petition noted.
