Touchdown Wire projects disappointing season for Arizona Cardinals

Touchdown Wire projects disappointing season for Arizona Cardinals Touchdown Wire's Jarrett Bailey predicts a sub-.500 season for the Cardinals in 2025
The Arizona Cardinals clearly have improved their roster, especially defensively. After an 8-9 season in 2024 when they lost five of their final seven games, they should be ready to compete for the division title.
That would be a logical belief, right?
Perhaps it is not. After a recent projection that the Cardinals would not win more than they did last season, Touchdown Wire's Jarrett Bailey's season projections have the Cardinals falling short of their goals.
Bailey has the Cardinals in third place in the NFC West for the second straight year and finishing 8-9, just like last season.
He recognizes their potential, though.
Arizona is another team I may be too low on. They won eight games last season and got better on defense. Don't be surprised if they're a Wild Card team.
It is going to be a competitive division for sure. The Rams still look good and added Davante Adams to their offense. The 49ers' bad year in 2024 seems like a one-off, and even though they lost a ton of players in the offseason, they have players on the roster who are ready to fill those roles.
As such, it makes sense to perhaps underrate the Cardinals and what they can do. But if they won eight games last season and are a better team in 2025, vastly so defensively in terms of talent, they should win more, right?
We will see.

Cardinals' Sonny Gray pitches complete game shutout in dominant win over Guardians

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray turned in one of the most dominant pitching performances of the season in the team's 5-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field Friday. Gray, 35, completed the "Maddux," pitching nine innings of shutout ball while yielding one hit and striking out 11 batters with just 89 pitches. Gray's performance marks the first time a pitcher tossed a complete-game shutout of under 90 pitches since 2021. New York Yankees ace Max Fried was the last pitcher to do it, when he shut down the Baltimore Orioles as a member of the Atlanta Braves. The three-time All-Star has thrown seven complete games in his 13-year career, but Friday's complete game was Gray's first since 2017, when he did it with the Yankees. "I did it a lot earlier in my career, and it's been a while," Gray said after the game. "You don't know if you would be able to do it, especially the way the games kind of went, and especially with me. Like, I don't throw over 100 pitches very often." Gray never threw more than 12 pitches in an inning and had two innings with eight or fewer pitches. Gray was on the attack throughout the game with 19 first-pitch strikes to the 28 batters he faced. The Cardinals' starter retired 15 of Cleveland's hitters on three pitches or fewer, including six on the first pitch. "I knew the innings were kind of moving right along. I did know that I was perfect through that long. I made a good pitch there when the guy got the hit, so I was fine with that," Gray said. "When I was going out for the ninth, it felt like just another inning, which was nice." The Cardinals (45-38) will look to build on Gray's performance when they take on the Guardians (40-40) in the second game of a three-game series Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET. Latest MLB Mock Draft has Cardinals Selecting Highly Touted LHP

Latest MLB Mock Draft has Cardinals Selecting Highly Touted LHP originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 MLB Draft is quickly approaching, and with just over two weeks remaining until this year's big event, MLB Pipeline has released its latest mock draft. Advertisement Many of the site's recent mock drafts have had the Cardinals selecting 17-year-old shortstop Eli Willits with the No. 5 overall pick. In the latest mock draft constructed by Jonathan Mayo of however, the Cardinals are projected to take LHP Jamie Arnold with their first-round pick. Arnold is a 21-year-old left-handed pitcher out of Florida State. He is MLB Pipeline's No. 4 overall draft prospect. This past season was Arnold's junior year at Florida State. He posted a 2.98 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 84 2/3 innings pitched for the Seminoles. He received First Team All-American honors as a sophomore and Second Team All-American honors as a junior. MLB Pipeline's No. 4 overall draft prospect Jamie ArnoldSteven Branscombe-Imagn Images Arnold's pitch arsenal includes a fastball that can touch the upper 90s, a devastating slider, as well as a changeup. His scouting report on MLB Pipeline compares him to Braves veteran left-handed pitcher Chris Sale. Advertisement "Arnold has shown the ability to fill up the strike zone and limit damage while maintaining his stuff deep into outings. With the funky arm slot, his stuff has drawn some comparisons to Chris Sale's, a reason why his name will be mentioned in conversations at the top of the first round." The Cardinals' No. 5 overall pick is the earliest the franchise has had since they selected J.D. Drew fifth overall in 1998. With Masyn Winn seemingly being the team's shortstop for the foreseeable future, and considering St. Louis went with shortstop JJ Wetherholt as their first-round selection last year, drafting a big-time starting pitcher like Arnold in this spot seems to make a lot of sense. This year's MLB Draft will begin on July 13 in Atlanta. Sonny Gray Becomes First Cardinal since Adam Wainwright to Accomplish Rare Feat

Sonny Gray Becomes First Cardinal since Adam Wainwright to Accomplish Rare Feat originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Sonny Gray turned in maybe the best pitching performance of the MLB season on Friday night in Cleveland. The Cardinals' ace was pretty much as close to perfect as you can get, as he went all nine innings, struck out 11, gave up just one hit, and surrendered no walks. Advertisement The most impressive part of his outing, though? He did it all on just 89 pitches. With this performance, Gray becomes the first Cardinal to throw a Maddux since Adam Wainwright did so against the Pirates in 2021. Wainwright was the first Cardinals pitcher to accomplish the feat since his good friend Chris Carpenter did it in 2011. Wainwright beat out Gray's pitch count by a singular pitch, only needing 88 to get through all nine innings. Although it's a rarity in today's game, Gray isn't the first Cardinal to toss a complete game shutout this year. Fellow veteran right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde went the distance without allowing a run on June 9 in a 10-0 win over the Nationals. Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny GrayDavid Richard-Imagn Images Gray was asked after the game if he ever thought he'd throw a Maddux. Advertisement His response (in typical Sonny Gray fashion): "I never even thought about it. I do like him, so that's pretty cool." Arguably the best performance of his career, it was Gray's fifth-ever complete-game shutout and first since 2015. His one blemish on the night came in the fifth inning when he surrendered a two-out single to Guardians right fielder Nolan Jones. Gray is now 8-2 on the year with a 3.36 ERA. He is next scheduled to pitch on Wednesday against the Pirates.
