Morocco Eyes Purchase of Korean Tanks, Submarines, and Air Defense Systems

Morocco World18-04-2025
Rabat – Morocco is exploring new opportunities in defense cooperation with South Korea, as economic ties between the two countries continue to grow, Arab Defense reported.
During an official visit to Seoul, Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, expressed strong interest in advanced South Korean military systems, including the K2 Black Panther tank, the KSS-III submarine, and the Cheongung air defense system, according to the report.
This visit comes shortly after Morocco signed a major railway deal with South Korean company Hyundai Rotem, worth around €1.5 billion. The agreement included the purchase of double-decker train units and has paved the way for deeper cooperation in other sectors, including defense.
According to Korean media reports, Mezzour took a close look at several military systems produced by South Korean companies. He showed particular interest in the K2 Black Panther tank, a high-tech tank equipped with a 1,500-horsepower diesel engine.
The minister also showed interest in the KSS-III submarine; added the report. The 3,000-ton submarine, developed and built entirely in South Korea, has been in service since 2018 and is being considered by countries like Canada and Poland to upgrade their naval fleets.
Morocco is also reportedly eyeing the Cheongung (KM-SAM) air defense system, designed to intercept both fighter jets and ballistic missiles. Its improved version, Cheongung 2, has already been exported to several countries in the Middle East.
While in Seoul, Mezzour held meetings with key South Korean government officials, including Kim Hee-sang from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ahn Duk-geun, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The discussions focused on starting negotiations for an economic partnership agreement and creating a non-binding but structured framework to boost trade and investment between the two countries.
Both sides agreed to work together more closely to face global economic challenges, such as supply chain disruptions and rising protectionism.

Morocco's Aeronautics Exports Hit MAD 14.13 Billion in First Half of 2025

Marrakech – Morocco's aerospace sector continues its upward trajectory, with exports reaching MAD 14.13 billion ($1.41 billion) during the first six months of 2025, an 8.8% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Office des Changes. This expansion flows primarily from increased sales in the Assembly segment, which jumped by MAD 728 million ($72.8 million), and the Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) segment, which advanced by MAD 427 million ($42.7 million). The positive performance extends the sector's remarkable decade-long transformation. Between 2014 and 2024, Morocco's aeronautical exports more than tripled, skyrocketing from MAD 7.69 billion ($769 million) to MAD 26.44 billion ($2.64 billion) – representing a 244% increase over ten years and an average annual growth rate of approximately 13%. Meanwhile, the EWIS segment witnessed exports climb from MAD 3.89 billion ($389 million) to MAD 9.1 billion ($910 million) during the same period, despite a temporary setback during the COVID-19 pandemic. Morocco's aerospace industry currently encompasses 150 companies generating an annual revenue of €2.5 billion. These firms, concentrated in Casablanca, Tangier, Rabat, and Fez, employ 26,000 workers full-time, specializing in fuselages, structural components, interior furnishings, and wiring systems. Speaking at the Paris Air Show last month, Minister of Industry and Commerce Ryad Mezzour revealed Morocco's competitive advantages, including lower production costs – €25 per hour compared to €100-120 in Europe or the US. He also stressed a steady supply of engineering talent, with 400 of the country's 23,000 annual engineering graduates entering the aeronautics sector. Looking ahead, Mezzour outlined ambitious plans to expand the industry's capabilities to include cabin fittings and landing gear manufacturing, with the goal of establishing aircraft assembly lines within the next decade. He projected doubling the sector's turnover by 2030. The aeronautics industry thrives on Morocco's strategic location near Europe, free trade agreements, political stability, competitive costs, and skilled workforce. The country has poured investments into infrastructure and training, including the Institut des Métiers de l'Aéronautique (IMA), to propel the sector's growth. The local integration rate has strengthened significantly, rising from 18% in 2010 to over 40% in certain segments today. Major international players including Boeing, Airbus, Safran, Stelia, and Bombardier have integrated Morocco as a strategic link in their global value chains, further cementing the country's position as an emerging aeronautical powerhouse in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Morocco and Senegal Further Industrial Partnership with Pan-African Vision

Rabat – Morocco and Senegal are strengthening their economic ties through a growing industrial partnership grounded in a Pan-African co-development vision. Bilateral trade between the two countries has expanded significantly, rising from $98.5 million in 2010 to $370 million in 2024, reflecting deepening cooperation based on mutual trust, solidarity, and economic complementarity. According to a recent interview with Senegal's government newspaper Le Soleil, Morocco's Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ryad Mezzour, emphasized this dynamic partnership and outlined three key priorities to further enhance collaboration: Transferring expertise in key sectors such as agribusiness and renewable energy. Sharing and optimizing port and logistics infrastructure. Establishing joint investment funds focused on regional small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Mezzour described Senegal as a 'pivotal partner' within Morocco's broader African industrial strategy, supported by ongoing bilateral technical programs. He also highlighted Morocco's robust economy, marked by a 55% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2024, driven by sector diversification, an attractive legal environment, and Morocco's role as a tri-continental connectivity hub. The minister further pointed to the rapid growth of Morocco's franchise sector, which includes 745 networks—84% international—with an average annual growth of 25% over 15 years and revenues of 20 billion dirhams. The government's 2025-2027 roadmap aims to boost exports, create jobs, and promote Moroccan brands internationally. 'Our ambition is to build shared prosperity with Africa,' Mezzour concluded. This interview featured in a special edition of Le Soleil commemorating Morocco's 26th Throne Day, showcasing Morocco's development model, industrial goals, and strong relations with African countries like Senegal. The edition also highlighted key growth sectors such as phosphates, manufacturing, franchising, and sports, with major projects in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the FIFA World Cup 2030.

Morocco Emerges as Major Hub for Foreign Industrial Investment

Morocco, under the Leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is establishing itself as a major hub for foreign industrial investment, particularly in the railway sector, said Jeong Hoon Kim, an executive at Korean conglomerate Hyundai Rotem. 'It is impressive to see Morocco's ability to steadily pursue a long-term development plan, thanks to the Leadership of His Majesty the King,' said Kim, head of rail solutions at Hyundai Rotem, in an interview with MAP on the occasion of the celebration of the Glorious Throne Day. Expressing admiration for the harmonious development of several sectors in Morocco over the past two decades, as well as the Kingdom's 'remarkable' resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kim said Morocco represents a strategic long-term market for Hyundai Rotem, offering numerous opportunities for industrial and technological partnerships. 'We have been following the Moroccan market for more than ten years, and the recent signing of our contract with the National Railways Office (ONCF) for the delivery of RER trains marks a concrete first milestone in our commitment,' he said, reaffirming the group's intention to be part of a sustainable cooperation dynamic. Kim also voiced interest in the Morocco Rail Plan 2040, which he described as an 'ambitious roadmap' for the expansion of the Kingdom's railway network, emphasizing Hyundai Rotem's desire to actively contribute to it. According to the Korean official, Morocco's political and economic stability is a key factor in attracting foreign investors, citing the example of Korean company Hands Corporation, which has established a car parts manufacturing plant in Morocco exclusively for the European market. 'This is a win-win cooperation model that we aim to replicate,' he said. Aware of Morocco's prioritization of renewable energies and its potential in green hydrogen, Kim said the sector represents a promising new area for cooperation. MAP: 28 July 2025
