South Korea Calls For ‘Mutually Beneficial' Trade Deal With US

(Bloomberg) -- South Korea called for a 'mutually beneficial' agreement on trade with the US during its new trade minister's first trip to Washington this week. Philadelphia Transit System Votes to Cut Service by 45%, Hike Fares US Renters Face Storm of Rising Costs Squeezed by Crowds, the Roads of Central Park Are Being Reimagined Sprawl Is Still Not the Answer Mapping the Architectural History of New York's Chinatown Yeo Han-koo held talks that concluded Friday with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, as well as several lawmakers in Washington, ahead of the July 9 deadline to reinstate higher tariffs paused in April. Yeo introduced new South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's policy and reaffirmed his commitment to reaching a deal for both sides, according to the ministry in a statement released Saturday. 'The ongoing negotiations are not merely for tariffs but also an opportunity to establish a new framework for future cooperation,' Yeo said in the statement. 'We will fiercely engage in the discussions to ensure the two countries' momentum for cooperation won't be undercut by the tariffs, and to turn the current crisis into an opportunity.' South Korea is a key US ally and major manufacturing hub for cars, semiconductors and batteries. If the 25% across-the-board levies are implemented, that would further undermine an economy that is already facing slowing domestic consumption. The central bank last month slashed its 2025 GDP growth forecast to 0.8% from 1.5%. Yeo also conveyed industry concerns about recent developments in US export control policy, as Washington tightens restrictions on technology transfers to competitors such as China. Lutnick, speaking on Bloomberg Television, said Washington is working to finalize more trade deals with 10 other countries in the coming two weeks in line with the July 9 deadline, though he did not specify which nations. He also said Trump could extend the deadline to facilitate talks, and that negotiating partners will get a 'response.' A senior South Korean official, speaking to reporters in Washington, said Seoul has not yet been informed of any extension and is not in a situation to 'feel assured,' according to Yonhap News. North Korea opens grand seaside resort inaugurated by Kim Jong Un; but, not everyone is welcome

North Korea has opened a grand seaside resort called Wonsan-Kalma. State media described it as a 'national treasure-level tourism city'. Kim Jong Un inaugurated it himself. The resort includes waterparks and high-rise hotels. It can host nearly 20,000 guests, CNN reported. It is located on North Korea's eastern coast and is connected by a newly-opened train station and international airport. The location hints at North Korea's plans to attract foreign visitors, especially Russians. Only Russian officials attended the opening, showing North Korea's stronger ties with Moscow and growing isolation from the West. While the country faces severe hunger and hardship, this lavish project is being promoted as proof of Kim's care for his people, according to CNN. Kim Jong Un has said North Korea will expand tourism zones soon and build big tourist and cultural sites across the country. Kim visited the Wonsan-Kalma resort at least seven times. The Supremo guided the work himself and aiming for top global standards. In December 2024, after nearly five years of COVID-related border closure, North Korea reopened the northern city of Samjiyon for tourists. Tour companies in China confirmed the news. The 2020 shutdown led to major food shortages due to halted imports and global sanctions. Travel firms expect other cities like Pyongyang to reopen soon as restrictions ease. Still, foreign tourist visits to North Korea remain strictly controlled. Past Russian tourists had to follow many rules, including limited photography and attending organised performances. Experts believe the resort may soon welcome Russian visitors. It will support Kim's image of focusing on tourism while continuing his defence policies, according to CNN. The new Wonsan-Kalma resort is expected to serve elite officials from Pyongyang, not the general public. Experts say the project shows Kim Jong Un's aim to boost the economy through tourism. In the 1990s, North Korea opened Mount Kumgang for South Korean visitors, seen as a rare step toward peace. Around two million tourists visited, bringing in money. But, the tours stopped after a South Korean visitor had been shot in 2008 for entering a restricted area. In 2022, many buildings in the region were demolished after Kim had called them outdated. 'The initial target for this resort is going to be the privileged domestic elite of Pyongyang, such as party officials and other high-ranking figures,' CNN quoted professor Lim Eul-chul as saying. 'The ceremony of the Wonsan-Kalma resort reflects Kim Jong Un's vision of 'socialist civilisation' and is part of his strategic effort to seek economic breakthroughs through the tourism industry,' Lim added.

The actor didn't forget her and made sure to repay the kindness. The user of the X-account @anxna52 said whenever Park Bo Gum came across her mother in the base, he would run towards her and greet her doing aegyo (cute gestures). He also prepared a "separate gift" for the woman during the holidays and even helped her carry the trash to the bin once. The daughter revealed that the When Life Gives You Tangerines star had "an amazing memory" and still remembered her mother's name. Recalling another heartwarming anecdote, she wrote, "When she (restaurant worker) hurt her leg, he was really concerned and brought her all kinds of health-related items to help." She mentioned being jealous of the bond her mother shared with the actor. "Every time they met, he would ask how she was feeling, hug her, get teary-eyed, and say he was always praying for her and that he really hoped she'd stay healthy," she stated. He also occasionally checked up on her since then, as per the woman's daughter. She stated that previously, she had only heard from others that Park Bo Gum was the 'king of good deeds,' but after personally experiencing his kindness, she can indeed vouch for the truth of that label.
