The minister was talking to reporters after distributing bank loans worth Rs 7.09 crore to members of the cooperative milk producers' federation in Trichy on Thursday. "Toddy is still toddy,' he said in response to Seeman's demand to lift the ban on toddy tapping. "Nobody said toddy tapping is shameful. We are following the ideology of social justice and equality. We want everybody to be educated. However, Seeman's tone indicates he is dragging people to the Manusmriti age of clan-based profession," Mano Thangaraj said.
Education is a necessity, and people may do any work after completing their studies, he said, and alleged that Seeman was overstating the toddy ban. The minister said the federation members are receiving Rs3.11 crore as incentives they made from the profits. District collector V Saravanan and Srirangam MLA M Palaniyandi were also present.

CM Stalin restarts interaction with cadre after 20 days
CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin resumed Udanpirappe Vaa interaction on Saturday after a gap of about 20 days following his hospitalisation. He interacted with functionaries of Uthiramerur Assembly constituency one-on-one at Anna Arivalayam. With the interaction on Saturday, a total of 40 constituencies have been covered, party sources said. Earlier, Stalin handed over a cheque for Rs 10 lakh to the minor sons and husband of Saritha, a party member from Tindivanam who died in a road accident on June 2. Saritha (45), a native of Iraiyur, died after being hit by a two-wheeler while crossing the road at Tindivanam. Despite receiving treatment at JIPMER, she succumbed to injuries. Saritha is survived by her husband S Kannan, and two sons aged 17 and 16. They received the cheque from Stalin on Saturday. Meanwhile, DMK's youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin held a review meeting with the state deputy secretaries of the wing. He stressed on appointing social media functionaries at all levels of the unit through interviews and on imparting training to young orators.

CM Stalin pushed for ban on lighters before EPS, says Anbarasan
CHENNAI: Following AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's assurance to Kovilpatti matchbox workers that lighters would be banned if his party came to power, MSME Minister TM Anbarasan said that the union government had already banned lighters under Rs 20 and the import of their spare parts, based on CM MK Stalin's demands. Anbarasan on Saturday said Stalin had written to the union ministry of commerce and industry in September 2022, demanding a ban on lighters. 'Although lighters under Rs 20 were banned in June 2023, spare parts were imported from various countries and assembled locally to sell lighters. We took up the matter again and pushed for the ban of spare parts in October 2024.' He further said that although during the Russia-Ukraine war the import of potassium chloride was affected, the TN government 'acted swiftly and procured it through Chennai Petrochemicals, and supplied it to matchbox manufacturers.' The Tamil Nadu government had also announced a facilitating centre for 'Kadali Mittai' manufacturing at a cost of Rs 7.13 crore with Rs 6.42 crore subsidy.

In a strong letter addressed to the Ministry of Finance, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has expressed serious concerns over the recent directive to keep bank branches open on Sunday, August 3, 2025. On behalf of public sector bank employees across India, the UFBU has condemned the instruction issued by the Department of Financial Services (DFS) in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture. According to the letter, the directive not only forces bank staff to work for 12 consecutive days—from July 28 to August 8—but also lacks legal backing under the Negotiable Instruments Act, as no official notification or gazette has been issued declaring August 3 as a working day. 'This move places the banking workforce in a legally ambiguous and administratively unprotected position," said UFBU in the letter. 'It disregards the physical and mental toll on bank employees who are already struggling with staff shortages, high customer footfall, and multiple government schemes." The union also highlighted the government's continued inaction on the long-pending demand for a 5-day work week. 'Instead of addressing this basic welfare measure, the government is asking banks to operate on Sundays without compensatory safeguards or consultation with unions," the letter read. Public sector banks, which execute nearly 100% of government welfare schemes including PM-KISAN, are operating under a severe staffing crunch. The customer-to-employee ratio in PSBs stands at a staggering 1:2100, compared to around 1:400 in private banks.
