JETOUR Showcases Advanced GAIA Platform at Auto Shanghai 2025, Signals Global Off-Road Ambitions

At Auto Shanghai 2025, one of the largest automotive showcases of the year, JETOUR unveiled its latest technological leap—the GAIA architecture. With the debut of its new off-road models, the G700 and G900, the Chinese automaker is signalling a strategic move into the premium off-road segment, traditionally dominated by established global brands.
The GAIA platform introduces a multi-mode hybrid architecture designed to support high-performance off-road mobility. It features two distinct systems: the iDM-O Super Hybrid and the iEM-O Amphibious Range-Extender. These systems combine combustion engines with electric motors to provide robust torque and high output suitable for challenging terrains.
JETOUR claims the iDM-O setup delivers up to 665kW of power and 1,135N·m of torque—figures that rival or exceed conventional V8 engine outputs. Meanwhile, the iEM-O version, equipped with quad motors and amphibious capabilities, reportedly achieves 1,200kW of total power and 18,000N·m in wheel-end torque. While these specifications are impressive on paper, real-world performance in varied climates and terrains—especially those relevant to Africa—remains to be seen. For South Africa, where rugged terrains and outdoor exploration are part of daily life and travel culture, JETOUR's GAIA-based vehicles may hold particular relevance. The increasing demand for hybrid and environmentally conscious vehicles could create opportunities for new players, especially those offering off-road capabilities without compromising on efficiency.
Moreover, with local interest in camping, safari tourism, and cross-country travel, JETOUR's focus on features such as adaptive air suspension, independent four-wheel control, and even drone-assisted exploration systems may resonate with adventure-focused consumers. That said, successful market penetration would require not only product availability but also an established service network, affordable parts supply, and a clear aftersales strategy—areas where new entrants often face challenges.
JETOUR is positioning itself not just as a carmaker but as a travel lifestyle brand. Its 'Travel+' ecosystem—covering vehicle customisation, accessories, community engagement, and travel services—suggests an ambition to build a brand identity beyond mobility. The company's leadership emphasises aligning technological advancement with environmental responsibility, aiming to make hybrid off-road exploration more accessible.
JETOUR's Assistant President and head of international strategy, Ke Chuandeng, articulated this vision during a presentation at Auto Shanghai. 'We aim to be the world's leading hybrid brand,' he said, underscoring the company's long-term commitment to the segment.
JETOUR's reported global sales of over 1.68 million units since its founding in 2018 reflect a rapid rise, particularly within China and select overseas markets. Whether this momentum can translate into competitive positioning in Africa—and South Africa specifically—will depend on multiple factors, including local partnerships, regulatory compliance, and consumer trust.
For now, the GAIA platform marks a bold technological statement, positioning JETOUR as an ambitious player to watch in the evolving off-road mobility space.

Chinese brands nearly doubled their combined share of the European market to 5.1% in the first half of 2025, just shy of Mercedes-Benz's 5.2%, the report said. Registrations of Chinese vehicles surged 91% since the start of the year. BYD, Jaecoo, Omoda, Leapmotor and Xpeng were the five names fuelling the surge, with BYD alone registering 70,500 units in the first six months of 2025, a 311% jump from a year ago. Stellantis saw the steepest market share decline among major automakers, to 15.3% from 16.7% a year earlier. The second biggest decline came from Tesla, to 1.6% in the half-year period versus 2.4% last year. Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEV) surpassed one million for the first time in the first half, with a 25% rise to 1.19-million units — 17.4% of the market. 'Persistently high prices, geopolitical and economic tensions with Europe's trading partners and the postpandemic market reality are behind the decline,' Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics, said. 'The updated Tesla Model Y has so far failed to provide the expected sales boost for the brand,' Munoz said. 'At the same time, competition from BYD and Volkswagen Group is making it harder for Tesla to maintain its leadership position.'

HELSINKI - Telecoms equipment maker Nokia said it is lowering its profit forecast due to the weaker dollar and US tariffs, as it reported second-quarter results. The profit outlook for the full year is now between 1.6 billion and 2.1 billion euros ($1.9 billion to $2.5 billion), 300 million euros less than previously indicated, it said. Currency fluctuations -- "particularly the weaker US dollar" -- and "the current tariff landscape" led to the revision, the Finnish company said in a statement to investors. A weaker dollar is weighing on European companies with operations in North America, reducing turnover in euro terms and making euro-denominated exports to that market more expensive. US President Donald Trump's 10 percent baseline tariff announced in April -- followed by threats to increase the tariffs on EU products to 30 percent after August 1 -- are weighing on other big European firms. The United States has also imposed a 30-percent tariff on goods imported from China, while China imposes a 10 percent levy on goods brought in from America. Nokia operates in both the US and Chinese markets. Nokia said current tariffs were "expected to impact full year operating profit by 50 million to 80 million euros". Nokia said its guidance is now based on a euro exchange rate of $1.17, compared with just above parity at the start of the year. The company said preliminary sales in the second quarter were 4.6 billion euros, with a 300-million-euro operating profit.

Russia's largest carmaker Avtovaz on Tuesday said it may shorten its working week to four from five days, a rare move from a major state-owned employer, as high interest rates and competition from China squeeze its sales. Avtovaz, struggling to find enough car buyers, said last month that it expects sales across Russia's car market to shrink by 25% this year and has blamed the central bank's high interest rates, which reduces appetite for car loans and raises production costs. Russia's key interest rate has been at a more than 20-year high for several months and the central bank has come under pressure from government officials and business leaders to reduce borrowing costs more quickly. The bank is widely expected to cut rates by 200 basis points to 18% on Friday. 'We are talking about the high key rate and tougher demands from the regulator for borrowers on car loans,' Avtovaz said in a statement. 'In addition, a significant number of cars have been imported into Russia, with imported brands pursuing a policy of price dumping.' Avtovaz employs more than 30,000 people, mostly in Togliatti, a city on the Volga river 800km southeast of Moscow, but does not disclose specific numbers. Its sales fell 25% to 155,481 units in the first half of this year, according to Autostat. The company switched to a four-day work week for three months in 2022 after Western sanctions were imposed due to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and foreign carmakers left the market. Sales of its flagship Lada car dropped by 48.2% to 174,688 units that year. Russia's domestic production had relied heavily on foreign producers and the market slumped in 2022 before the rapid arrival of Chinese carmakers helped revive the sector. Chinese rivals now account for more than 50% of sales in Russia, up from less than 10% before the war started. 'The final decision about introducing a part-time four-day work week regime will be made following analysis of market trends and economic factors, including the level of the key rate and the availability of credit products,' Avtovaz said. Should it be implemented, the shortened work week would start in late September.
