Guardians' Austin Hedges activated from 7-day injured list

SEATTLE (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians activated catcher Austin Hedges from the 7-day injured list prior to Friday night's game against the Seattle Mariners.
Hedges, 32, was placed on the list retroactive to last Thursday after he was struck on the helmet on a backswing by the New York Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. during a game on Wednesday. It marked the fifth time Hedges — who is hitting .113 with three home runs and three RBIs this year— has been placed on the injured list because of a concussion across 11 MLB seasons.
'They're all very similar, at least my version of them," Hedges said. "Apparently there's a handful of different types of brain injuries, and mine have been pretty consistent just at least with the symptoms. So, it was nothing new for me. Luckily this one wasn't very bad and didn't take that long to get over it.'
Hedges said his symptoms started to clear up roughly three days removed from the incident. He visited a specialist in Pittsburgh prior to joining the Guardians in Seattle, one which he had worked with during his first stint in Cleveland from 2020 to 2022.
Hedges said he was appreciative of the Guardians not rushing him back to play too quickly.
'We have such an amazing staff, and they're always looking out for all of us," Hedges said. "But, I felt like we handled everything perfectly and just happy that it was the minimum amount of time.'

Dodgers' Muncy on injured list with knee bruise after collision with White Sox's Taylor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy went on the injured list Thursday with a left knee bone bruise. He had a MRI that showed no structural damage. He's expected to be out about six weeks. 'It was obviously amazing hearing the news that nothing was torn, nothing was ripped,' said Muncy, who was walking gingerly. 'That was obviously a huge sigh of relief for me, but it still sounds like too long of a time in my head.' He left in the sixth inning Wednesday night after a collision with Chicago White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor, who was attempting a steal. Muncy took a throw from catcher Will Smith and tagged out Taylor. Muncy sprawled on his back as a Dodgers trainer came out to check on him. He had to be helped off the field and was barely able to put any weight on his left leg. 'It was tough news but it was also great news in terms of when you look at the play and just the injury that could have happened,' Muncy said. A White Sox trainer checked on Taylor, who sustained a bruised back and left the game. The incident occurred just before Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw got his 3,000th career strikeout against Vinny Capra to end the inning. There was a brief delay before Muncy and Taylor left the field. 'The first thought that was really going through my head was as I'm laying on the ground was 'Dang, I have to make Kersh sit there and think about stuff right now.' I really was not happy about that,' Muncy said. 'I'm in the X-ray room and heard the crowd roar and I was kind of like, 'Man, missed it.' Honestly, that was the most heartbreaking thing to me.' Muncy is hitting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI in 81 games this season. The Dodgers recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he batted .292 with eight homers, 37 RBI and 38 stolen bases in 66 games. He was acquired in April from the Athletics in exchange for minor league pitcher Carlos Duran after being designated for assignment on March 30. ___

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp offers touching message after ex-player Diogo Jota's death

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp wrote a moving tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash early Thursday morning. Klopp, who coached Jota for four seasons at Liverpool, said Thursday he was 'heartbroken' by the news. 'This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it!' Klopp posted on Instagram. 'I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre. Max Muncy heads to IL with what Dodgers are calling a left knee bone bruise

The Dodgers will be without Max Muncy after the third baseman was placed on the injured list Thursday with what the team is calling a bone bruise in his left knee. Muncy was injured in the sixth inning of Wednesday's walk-off win over the Chicago White Sox when Chicago's Michael Taylor slid headfirst into third on an unsuccessful attempt to steal third base. The Dodgers now have 13 players on the injured list. Taylor's helmet hit Muncy's knee, bending it sideways and flipping the infielder to the ground. The collision was so gruesome, SportsNet LA, which was broadcasting the game, did not show replays. Muncy writhed on the ground in obvious pain before being helped to the clubhouse. Taylor also left the game with a shoulder contusion. The White Sox have listed his status as day to day. Muncy's place on the roster was taken by outfielder Esteury Ruiz, who was acquired on April 2 from the Athletics in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Carlos Duran. Ruiz appeared in 66 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .292 with eight homers, 37 RBIs and 38 stolen bases. Muncy's absence will leave a big hole in the Dodgers' lineup. He led the team with a .333 average and 24 RBIs in June, when he matched Shohei Ohtani for the lead in home runs with seven. He is hitting .250/.375/.457 for the season and is third on the team with 55 RBIs. 'He's huge,' pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who was on the mound when the injury happened, said of Muncy. 'I don't really know why he stole there. It just seemed unnecessary. We're all holding our breath that Munc is going to be OK. 'He's obviously a huge part of our team, especially the last two months.' Miguel Rojas, who hasn't played since injuring his left hand on an attempted steal Sunday, started at third base Thursday. Kiké Hernández, who took Muncy's place Wednesday, is also likely to see some time at third in Muncy's absence. Hernández is hitting .204/2.70/.383 while Rojas, primarily a second baseman, is batting .250/.289/.380.
