Arctic Monkeys' 'true meaning' of iconic song that fans are still trying to work out

Daily Mirror25-04-2025
Fans of Arctic Monkeys are still trying to work out the meaning behind one of the band's most iconic songs, with one Reddit user suggesting they have finally cracked the code
Arctic Monkeys' fans are still puzzled over the meaning of one of the band's biggest hits. The indie rock legends have a plethora of popular songs, with tracks like Fluorescent Adolescent continuing to spark discussions among fans even after more than a decade since its release.
Now, attention has shifted to a song from Arctic Monkeys ' most commercially successful album, led by Alex Turner. A post on the r/ArcticMonkeys subreddit has seen fans sharing their various interpretations of a track from 2013's AM, an album that was released around the time the band were headlining Glastonbury Festival.

Fans are still trying to figure out the meaning behind the song, Do I Wanna Know?, which featured on the 2013 album.
One user wrote: "My interpretation of AM's 'Do I Wanna Know?' I feel that the best way to enjoy this song is with the music video. A lot of people find the AM persona irritating and cringe. Constantly chasing this girl to no avail and telling us, the listener, about his fantasies about her.
"But I find it quite interesting. You can clearly see in the video the personas spiral into madness as s**t just gets weirder and weirder, symbolising how the character may feel.

"It starts out as clearly being black and white (either true or false) but then colour creeps its way into the video symbolising how the persona begins to question what he knows and believes because of this girl.
"This culminates into full blown explosion of colour and confusion. The things that the character used to know as true are ultimately questioned and perhaps ignored." Other users have suggested other interpretations of the song, which has been aided by watching the music video.
Another has since thanked the original poster, as the music video has recontextualised the song for them. They wrote: "I never watched the music video until now so thanks.

"It's the song that got me into it them so I don't find it cringy. But I also think that the video could symbolize him getting farther and farther away from the girl (feels like he's losing her and control over the situation/his feelings).
"Like things started out simple and easy to understand between them, black and white, and slowly got more confusing, adding colour, until he's not even sure what's happening between them or if there was anything to start with."
But some fans have suggested that this bewildering track is misunderstood as being superficial. One user countered: "That's an interesting perspective...
"I'm pretty sure it was never meant to be as shallow as people perceived it to be. It's just that because it got really popular, people thought it just became a stupid song.
Another jokingly claimed the song straightforward than the original poster suggested. The song 'Do I Wanna Know?' appears on Arctic Monkeys' widely debated 2013 album, AM.
However, one user thinks they've deciphered its rather simple message, humorously suggesting: "He just doesn't know if he wants to know."

Love Island fans ‘work out' which couple will be dumped tonight – and the reason controversial boy is ‘safe'

Fans have taken to Reddit to share their thoughts on who will be leaving SAVING GRACE Love Island fans 'work out' which couple will be dumped tonight – and the reason controversial boy is 'safe' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Island viewers think they've figured out which couple will be dumped during tonight's episode - and it's not who you think it might be. The last seven couples are vying for a place in Monday night's final but one pair have already been booted out. Fans haven't been loving Blu's antics in the villa after he returned with Megan Fort-Clarke last week, but fans think he'll be saved for one specific reason. They believe the controversial character will be safe because of Helena's fans choosing to save them, and think that Ty Isherwood and Angel Swift will be leaving instead. Taking to Reddit, one fan expressed: 'Fewest votes will be between Megan and Conor/Angel and Ty. Helena's parents visit I think might've saved her. They were ranking higher than those two on FB.' Another viewer argued: 'Helena did really well in some Facebook polls. Loads of comments saying they voted Helena, got lots of likes. Bottom 2 would be ty/Angel & Connor Megan.' Somebody else gave their opinion about who will be leaving as they said: 'Ty & Angel, they're not offering anything just freeloading at the moment.' While a fourth wrote: 'My prediction is that Ty and Angel will be dumped for having the lowest votes.' At the end of last night's episode, the preview for tonight's instalment teased the exit of one pair as a text was sent to the islanders about the dumping. A source told The Sun yesterday: 'We're at the pointy end of the competition now so viewer opinion matters more and more. 'Not even OGs are safe now. This pair were one of the standouts from Meet The Parents and fans had opinions on how that went down. 'He's obsessed with her!' rage Love Island fans as stars clash in dramatic challenge 'It's been a dramatic series and ITV2 bosses don't plan to let things become stale at this stage.' Since his return to the villa, OG islander Blu has clashed with Toni Laites on a number of occasions but she's refused to rise to it. During a challenge on last night's episode, the islanders were gathered around the firepit to play a game where they had to pick a couple they thought were best suited for a particular category. During one part of the challenge, Blu turned his board around and told the group: 'This is directed at Toni really, because I've tried to give her my honest opinion and she didn't take it. Love Island: Who is Left? These are the couples who are still in the Majorcan villa as the show reaches its final days Meg and Dejon Helena and Blu Shakira and Harry Toni and Cach Yasmin and Jamie Angel and Ty Megan and Connor 'I'm not scared, I've tried and… Toni.' As the Islanders burst into laughter, Toni shot back: 'I still don't care unfortunately. Sorry Blu. I don't have it in me anymore.' Blu, who was pied three times, replied: 'That's cool, I'm glad you don't care,' as the awkward moment between them came to an end. Fans took to X to claim that Blu is obsessed with Toni as one person said: 'Blu is OBSESSED with Toni … like he's actually a weirdo.' A second penned: 'Why is Blu so obsessed with Toni?' And a third echoed: 'Blu, I'm begging- leave Toni alone. It's giving obsessed.'
