Greens worth Rs 20 bought for Rs 80 in Tenkasi GH; Rs 6.6L loss, five officers in dock
TENKASI: Director of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMS) Dr J Rajamoorthy has ordered recovery of Rs 6.59 lakh from five officials after an audit revealed that leafy greens meant for patients' use at the Tenkasi Government District Headquarters Hospital were bought at Rs 80 per kg when their actual market rate was only Rs 20 per kg. The five officials were working in the office of the Joint Director of Health Service (JDHS).
Sources said, the price of one kg of greens was altered in the purchase order from Rs 25 to Rs 80, after the JDHS had approved the procurement price at Rs 25 per kg.
Of the five officials ordered to shell out Rs 6.59 lakh, V Sripadmavathi, former administrative official in JDHS office, was told to pay Rs 3.29 lakh, as per the recovery order accessed by TNIE.
Sources in the DMS office said a team of auditors is likely to launch a special audit in government hospitals at Sankarankovil, Sivagiri, Puliyangudi, Kadayanallur, and Shengottai where approximately Rs 50 lakh is suspected to have been misappropriated through similar collusion between officials and contractors.
Health department sources said, the alleged malpractice at the Tenkasi GHQH took place in two rounds between October 2022 and March 2023, and April 2023 to September 2023. 'The statistical department had fixed the price but the illegal procurement was done in collusion with contractors,' sources said.

Poonthura woman loses lakhs in Jordan visa scam
Thiruvananthapuram: Amid moves to hand over the probe into the Jordan visa fraud to crime branch, a Poonthura-based woman on Saturday alleged that the accused in the case defrauded Rs 4 lakh from her and her husband by offering them Israeli work visas, last year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused, Biju Jalas, 44, of Thumba, took John Mary, 48, and her husband Romance, 52, to Jordan on Jan 7, 2024, promising Israeli work visas with an attractive salary. After reaching Jordan, the couple were placed in separate congested rooms for nearly three weeks without proper food and water. In the meantime, Romance died of a heart attack. Mary struggled to bring his body back home as the agent did not provide her any help. "I went through the toughest days of my life. Communication was also difficult as I did not even know the language there. We boarded the flight dreaming of a better life and to provide excellent education to our daughters. But his death shattered me completely, and the loss was something irreversible. The Indian Embassy in Jordan helped me travel back to India with his body, but I had to arrange an additional Rs 5 lakh. I became even more in debt, and the thought that I was alone in the journey ahead affected my mental health. No person should suffer like this. The agent made us believe that the cost of an Israeli visa is much less in Jordan and the process was also easier. But it was a lie. He deserves maximum punishment," said Mary. She said that when she requested her money back, the accused refused to provide her any. The fraud came to light only on Feb 10, 2025, after Thumba native Thomas Gabriel Pereira, 47, was shot dead by Jordanian soldiers while attempting to sneak into Israel through the Jordan border. His brother-in-law, Edison, 44, was also injured in the leg in the firing. Edison was later deported back to India by Jordan, and it was he who informed the relatives about Thomas's death. Poonthura natives Jincy, 32, her husband Norman, 35, Ajeesh, 28, Judit, 29, and Binu, 22, were also reportedly cheated by the same accused. All of them had to leave Jordan after failing to get Israeli work visas.

Lorry carrying luxury cars catch fire near Poigai, Tamil Nadu; driver escape unharmed
ANI 29 Jun 2025, 01:24 GMT+10 Vellore (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 28 (ANI): A container lorry transporting luxury cars worth Rs 3.6 crore caught fire near Poigai village in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district on Friday, causing a temporary disruption along the busy Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway, police said. The lorry, carrying two high-end luxury cars valued at Rs 1.8 crore each, was en route from Chennai Port to Bengaluru when the incident occurred. The driver, identified as a 20-year-old Akash from Uttar Pradesh, reportedly swerved the vehicle to avoid an oncoming two-wheeler, causing the lorry to veer off and come to rest in an empty roadside area. The vehicle remained parked under overhead power lines for an extended period. According to preliminary investigations, strong winds may have caused the wires to scrape, triggering an electric surge. This surge is believed to have led to an explosion in the diesel tank, igniting a fire that engulfed the front section of the lorry. Upon receiving the alert, officers from Virinjipuram Police Station quickly notified the Vellore District Fire and Rescue Services. Firefighters arrived promptly and battled the flames for over an hour before successfully bringing the blaze under control. While the front of the lorry was completely destroyed in the fire, the container section housing the cars remained intact. No injuries were reported, and the luxury vehicles were not damaged. (ANI)
