Black Box Of Crashed Air India Plane In India, Being Examined: Minister
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Tuesday said the black box of the Air India plane, which crashed in Ahmedabad earlier this month, was being examined by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, and dismissed speculation that it would be sent abroad for an inquiry.
The London-bound Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex in Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport there on June 12 afternoon, killing 270 persons, including 241 on board. One passenger survived.
The black box of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane was recovered from the site on June 13.
A black box is a small device that records information about an aircraft during its flight. It helps in the investigation of aviation accidents.
Asked about some media reports suggesting the black box would be sent abroad for a probe into the incident, Mr Naidu said, "...it is all speculation. The black box is very much in India, and it is currently being investigated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB)."
To a query on when the black box data is expected to be retrieved, the minister said it is a very technical matter.
"Let the AAIB conduct the probe and go through the entire process," he added.
Mr Naidu was speaking here on the sidelines of the Helicopters & Small Aircraft Summit 2025, organised by FICCI jointly with the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
A high-level panel has been set up to investigate the causes of the Ahmedabad plane crash, and the investigation is progressing smoothly, the government said after the incident.
"Decoding the black box is going to give an in-depth insight into what happened moments before the plane crash," Mr Naidu had earlier said.

New Delhi: Asked by a BJP MP if the government was considering changing the Gaya airport's international code 'GAY' to something 'more respectful and culturally appropriate', the civil aviation ministry pointed out that these identifiers can only be changed in exceptional circumstances. In his question to the ministry, Rajya Sabha MP for Bihar Bhim Singh claimed that 'people' consider the Gaya airport's IATA or International Air Transport Association code of 'GAY' to be 'socially and culturally offensive'. He asked if the government had received complaints or suggestions on the identifier, whether it is considering bringing in a 'more respectful and culturally appropriate code', what steps it has taken in this regard if so, and the reasons why if it is not. Responding to Singh on Monday (July 4), minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol said that an airport's IATA code is generally made up of the first three letters of the place where it is located. The ministry as well as the Airports Authority of India have received requests to change the Gaya airport's IATA code in the past, Mohol said, adding that Air India too had approached the Association trying to get it modified. However, IATA informed the airline that its identifiers are 'considered permanent' and changed only in 'exceptional circumstances', which generally have to do with matters of air safety, Mohol recalled. This is the same answer that the civil aviation ministry gave to the parliamentary standing committee on public undertakings when the latter had recommended a change to the Gaya airport's IATA code. 'The committee have their apprehension that Gaya being a holy city, locals might be finding it offensive or embarrassing on their city being recognised in the international community with the code name 'GAY' [sic],' it had told the ministry, adding that it too found the identifier to be 'inappropriate and unsuitable'. Asked what action it had taken on the matter, the ministry in September 2021 informed the committee that while Air India had approached IATA seeking a change, the latter 'expressed its inability to change' the code 'without a justifiable reason primarily concerning air safety'. While the committee 'appreciated' Air India's efforts, it reiterated its view that the government must 'make all effort to takeup the matter with the IATA and concerned organisation as the issue involves inappropriate code naming of an airport of a holy city of our country [sic],' it said in its report tabled in February 2022. The Supreme Court had decriminalised homosexual relations four years prior, in 2018. Located in southern Bihar, Gaya is home to holy sites in Hinduism and Buddhism. P4 will eradicate poverty in Andhra by 2029: CM Naidu
Amaravati, Aug 5 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said the state's P4 initiative—Public-Private-People Partnership—aims to eradicate poverty and achieve a 'zero-poverty" goal by 2029. Naidu had launched the 'P4 Margadarsi–Bangaru Kutumbam' programme on March 30 in Amaravati. The initiative encourages affluent individuals to voluntarily support economically weaker families. Under the scheme, donors are termed 'margadarsis' (mentors), and the beneficiaries are referred to as 'bangaru kutumbams' (golden families). The programme envisions the top 10 per cent of society mentoring and supporting the bottom 20 per cent to help lift them out of poverty. 'The P4 initiative will achieve the zero-poverty target by 2029. We've taken the first step and are setting a benchmark for the entire country," Naidu said in a release. Reviewing the poverty alleviation programme with MLAs and officials at the Secretariat, the chief minister announced that P4 will be implemented statewide from August 19. 'Our mission is to raise the standard of living for every family in Andhra Pradesh. Even small acts of support from Margadarsis can bring significant change in the lives of the poor," he said. Naidu cited the example of Pallakunta Hemalatha, a sanitation worker from Avanigadda constituency, who volunteered to support an elderly woman, describing her as a 'guiding light" of the programme. He emphasised that 'bangaru kutumbams' require emotional bonding and consistent support. Stressing that selection of 'margadarsis' should be purely voluntary, the chief minister warned against coercion. 'Only those with compassion and humanity should participate in this effort. Unfortunately, some people are trying to obstruct such good initiatives by spreading negativity," he said. He directed officials to reach out to NRIs and industrialists abroad to inspire them to give back to society. So far, 9.3 lakh beneficiary families and over one lakh donors have been identified under the P4 programme, Naidu said. He added that the needs of 10 lakh 'bangaru kutumbams' have been mapped and prioritised. Based on responses from an 11-question survey and AI-driven analysis, 31 per cent of families were found to need employment, 22 per cent sought medical assistance, and 9 per cent required support to expand small businesses. Naidu also noted that many 'margadarsis' are coming forward to adopt entire villages and mandals. A 'fund a need' option has been added to the P4 platform to support specific requirements, he said. Handloom sector gets a major boost in Andhra Pradesh
In a significant move to support the traditional weaving community, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has announced a series of measures aimed at revitalising the handloom sector. These measures include provision of 200 units of power free of cost to traditional looms and 500 units to powerlooms. The government has also decided to bear the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on handloom textiles. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who chaired a review meeting on Tuesday, outlined several initiatives that would come into effect starting August 7 (National Handloom Day). Mr. Naidu emphasised that after agriculture, the handloom sector was the most critical source of rural employment and deserved focused attention. The Chief Minister recalled a recent interaction he had with a weaver's family during his visit to Jammalamadugu, which brought to his attention the struggles faced by the community. 'As a response, the government has decided to offer 200 units of free electricity for traditional handlooms and 500 units for powerlooms. This move will significantly reduce operational costs for weavers across the State,' Mr. Naidu said. The government also resolved to bear the entire GST on handloom textiles. 'This means, the government will pay the GST directly to the Centre, relieving weavers and handloom sellers of the tax burden,' he said. Officials explained that the measure would help reduce the prices of handloom products, making them more accessible to consumers and increasing sales, which in turn would benefit the weavers. Thrift fund To further support the financial stability of handloom workers, the government would set up a ₹5-crore thrift fund. The fund was aimed at providing long-term social security and financial aid to those engaged in the sector. During the meeting, the officials presented the Chief Minister with details of recent national recognition received by Andhra Pradesh's handloom artisans. The State secured 10 national awards for excellence in handloom production, including its first award under the One District–One Product (ODOP) initiative. The Chief Minister reiterated his government's commitment to the uplift of traditional artisans and fulfil the promises made during the elections.
