Mysuru roads full of potholes, no funds for repair, says MLA

The Hindu7 hours ago
MLA for Krishnaraja T.S. Srivatsa on Tuesday lamented the alleged absence of funds for repair of roads in Karnataka's Mysuru city.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Srivatsa pointed out that the roads of the city are full of potholes even though the Dasara is scheduled to start in September this year.
He urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is scheduled to launch a series of development works in Mysuru later this month, to ensure that the city is made pothole-free. The condition of 'pothole-ridden' roads in Mysuru has worsened due to the monsoon rains, he said, while urging Mr. Siddaramaiah to take up the repair work on 'priority'.
'The authorities have funds for cutting roads to carry out Underground Drainage (UGD) works, but funds are not available for repair of roads damaged by the same,' he said.
After much pleading and addressing the problem to the State Chief Secretary, Mr Srivatsa said he managed to secure sanction of funds for repair of five roads.
The BJP MLA also alleged discrimination in the release of funds to the Krishnaraja assembly segment by the Department of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development for the repair of rural roads.
Though ₹21 crore, each, had been released for the adjoining urban constituencies of Chamaraja and Narasimharaja, both represented by Congress MLAs, the Krishnaraja constituency represented by him, had not been sanctioned any funds, he said.
With the government not releasing funds for development works citing financial pressure of guarantee schemes, Mr. Srivatsa said that the people have started questioning the MLAs about their role.
'The government transfers money to the MLAs through Direct Benefit Transfer. What role do the MLAs play? Have they repaired roads, opened schools, cleared the drainages? These are questions they the MLAs have to face from their constituencies,' he said, while pointing out that a displeasure towards the government among ruling party MLAs, too, was increasing.

Lorry owners call off strike after Karnataka clears pending Anna Bhagya dues

The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents' Association has officially withdrawn its indefinite strike following the Karnataka government's decision to clear pending dues related to the Anna Bhagya scheme. The strike, launched on Monday, had brought the transportation of rice and foodgrains across the State to a halt. The association had cited non-payment of bills for over six months as the primary reason for the protest. However, on Tuesday, the State government issued an order releasing ₹244.1 crore towards incidental expenses including transportation charges for the period between February and May 2025. Federation president G.R. Shanmugappa welcomed the move and announced the withdrawal of the strike, stating that the government had responded positively to their demands. 'The government has promised us that all pending dues will be settled within 48 hours. Accordingly, our members have decided to resume transport services with immediate effect,' said Mr. Shanmugappa. He further added that the State has also promised to refund the earnest money deposit (EMD) of ₹26 crore, paid by lorry owners during the tendering process, within four days. Earlier, the federation had expressed frustration over the non-payment for foodgrain transportation services provided under the Anna Bhagya programme since February. Anna Bhagya, one of the Congress government's flagship welfare initiatives, offers free rice to eligible families and is a critical part of its five key guarantee schemes announced after coming to power in 2023.

Rising atrocities against tribals & Dalits in Bihar a grave concern: CM

1 2 Ranchi: A day after five members of a family were burnt alive in election-bound Bihar, Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, who is looking after his ailing father Shibu Soren at a Delhi hospital, said he cannot keep quiet when Dalits and poor people are tortured. In the Bihar incident, a mob lynched five members of a tribal family and later burnt them alive in Purnia late on Sunday night charging them with witchcraft. Taking to X, Hemant appealed to his Bihar counterpart, Nitish Kumar, to stake strict action against the perpetrators. "I urge the Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri @NitishKumar ji, to issue directives to take appropriate steps to swiftly apprehend the culprits and ensure they receive the most stringent punishment. The continuously increasing atrocities on tribals/Dalits in Bihar are a matter of grave concern." In Ranchi, Hemant's party JMM, too, expressed shock and grave concern over the situation. Mounting pressure on BJP, which is part of alliance govt led by Nitish Kumar (JDU) in Bihar, JMM's general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharjee said, "Whatever happened in Purnia is part of the spree of attacks on the poor, tribals, marginalised and minorities in places wherever BJP is directly or partly in power. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo Bihar is the latest example. " He added that BJP, which is trying to allegedly throw many out of Bihar's voters' list through the ECI's special amendment drive ahead of the election in the neighbouring state, is also using such violent tactics to silence voters, who are against the saffron party. The JMMM leader also questioned the role of the police in the entire episode. "The harrowing incident that happened with the family lasted for several hours — from beating them at one place to burning the five at different place and dumping bodies at another location. What was Bihar police doing all these while?" he said.

2026 polls fight for Bengali Hindus, nationalist Muslims to retain identity: Samik

1 2 Kolkata: Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said on Tuesday that the 2026 assembly elections will be a fight for Bengali Hindus and nationalist, educated sections of the Muslim community to retain their identity. "This election is a fight to retain the existence of Bengali Hindus and nationalist, logical Muslims in the state. The forces of election in Bengal will not be hijacked by political parties this time," Bhattacharya said. The comments come days after the Bengal BJP chief said his party was not against Muslims even though the minority community might be critical of BJP, in an apparent bid to dent the minority support base of Trinamool Congress . When they set the Indira Gandhi Cultural Center in Bangladesh on fire, Abul Bashar's books burnt along with poems of Joy Goswami," Bhattacharya had said in his first public address after being elected BJP president. On Tuesday, he raised concerns about what he called "the rise of fundamentalist and fascist forces believing in Islam". He said Trinamool's policies have given rise to a situation in which Muslims were being attacked by Muslims. "We are fighting against the lack of education and poverty among the Muslim community. We want Muslim youths to get into govt jobs based on merit, not through quota. They should not follow the ways of Afzal Guru. If Trinamool retains power in 2026, Bengal will remind us of what used to happen in Jammu and Kashmir," he said. "I respect pluralism in politics and BJP believes in multi-party democracy. If pluralism and multi-party democracy are to survive in Bengal, the fundamentalist and fascist forces believing in Islam have to go," Bhattacharya added. The state BJP chief met Dilip Ghosh, the former BJP national vice president on Tuesday. After meeting Bhattacharya, Ghosh said, "I have been with BJP. It has grown because of the sweat and blood of party workers. More than 150 workers were killed. I cannot forget that. Neither can BJP workers forget that. We will uproot Trinamool in 2026." Bhattacharya, on his part, said party veterans will be frontrunners in the 2026 campaign. "There is no debate between veterans and newcomers. BJP advanced in Bengal only because veterans paved the way," he added.
