‘In skirts or western clothes? View temple from outside': Posters at 40 MP temples ask women to follow Indian dress code; activist says 'no one can dictate to us'

Time of India3 days ago
JABALPUR: "If you are wearing miniskirts, jeans-tops, or Western clothes, please view the temple from outside," say posters put up outside at least 40 temples in Jabalpur city.
These posters, placed by a right-wing organisation, appeal to women and young girls to dress in accordance with Indian culture when entering temples.
The posters have become a topic of debate in the city.
Reacting to them, advocate and women's rights activist Ranjana Kurariya said, 'What clothes we wear is our right. We can wear a saree, salwar-kurta, or anything we feel comfortable in. Deciding what to wear is our right; no one can dictate that to us — not even request it. God is for everyone, be it women or men. Seeing such posters will hurt women who visit temples.'
She further questioned the very notion of Indian culture, saying, 'What is Indian culture? If we look back in time, stitched clothes weren't even worn here — they were brought in from other countries.'
The posters request that visitors wear attire in line with Indian culture while entering temple premises.
Those wearing short clothes, half-pants, Bermudas, miniskirts, or night suits are asked to view the temple from outside. Girls and women are also requested to cover their heads upon entering. The posters emphasise that the message should not be taken otherwise, stating that preserving Indian culture is essential.

The Mahakal Sangh International Bajrang Dal is mentioned as the issuer.
Ankit Mishra, district media in-charge of the International Bajrang Dal, said that the posters have been placed at 30 to 40 prominent temples in the city and are being extended to more. He stated that women play a leading role in religious activities and that preserving Indian culture is in their hands. He appealed to them to dress according to Indian tradition when visiting temples.
The organisation behind the posters clarified that they are merely making a request to women and girls through this appeal.

Prayagraj temples ban poly bags, packaged milk

Prayagraj: Starting from the holy month of Shrawan, devotees visiting Shri Mankameshwar Mahadev and Rinmukteshwar Mahadev in Prayagraj will no longer be allowed to offer milk in polythene packages or plastic bottles. The temple management has issued a strict directive requiring devotees to bring milk in traditional containers such as brass, copper, silver, or earthen pots. This decision was taken not only to uphold religious beliefs but also to safeguard the environment. Shri Mankameshwar Mahadev Temple, located in Kydganj Mohalla on the banks of the Yamuna, holds historical and spiritual significance. The temple is mentioned in ancient scriptures like the Shiva, Padma and Skanda Puranas as 'Kameshwar Teerth,' where Lord Shiva is believed to have resided after burning Kamadeva, the God of Love. The temple also houses the Shivling of Rinmukteshwar Mahadev, said to be established by Lord Suryadev in Treta Yug. Every year, on the Monday of the Shravan month, lakhs of devotees throng the temple to offer prayers and perform Rudrabhishek, an important ritual involving the pouring of water, milk and other sacred items on the Shivling. In recent years, concerns grew over the environmental impact caused by devotees bringing milk in polythene bags and plastic bottles. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Here's what a microbiologist says CNA Read More Undo After the ritual, many would carelessly discard these polythene packets leading to littering and drain blockages. The temple management earlier banned devotees from performing Rudrabhishek while wearing torn jeans, T-shirts, or pants, insisting that men wear dhotis and women wear ghotis or sarees. Mahant Shridharanand Brahmachari of Shri Mankameshwar Mahadev Temple explained the spiritual and scriptural basis for these bans. "According to the scriptures, water offerings should be made using gold, silver, brass, or copper vessels, commonly known as lotas, while milk offerings are ideally made in silver vessels or earthen pots if silver is unavailable. Steel, aluminium, iron, or polythene containers are considered inauspicious or impure," said the priest. He emphasised that bringing packaged milk is a convenience-driven practice, but it leads to sin when devotees discard polythene in the temple, thus disrespecting the sanctity of the place. In a similar eco-friendly stance, the management of the famous Padila Mahadev temple has banned offering of flowers wrapped in polythene. According to the temple authorities, devotees often leave these flower packets near the deity or scatter it around the temple grounds, contributing to garbage buildup and clogging of drainage systems.

High admissions, five sets of twins bring double delight to Sullia school

Mangaluru: The Government High School, Yenmoor, in Murulya village, Sullia, is now home to five pairs of twins, four in class eight and one in Class 10, creating an unusual and delightful sight of identical faces and shared milestones in the school. The school currently has two pairs of twin girls and three pairs of twin boys. In class eight, the twins include Chayan and Chayank, Hiba Fathima and Shifa Fathima, Yashwin and Yashwith, and Fathimath Asna and Aminath Husna. In class 10, Bhavan and Bhavin complete the lineup of lookalike batchmates. Headmaster Titus Varghese, who is also an award winning teacher, told TOI that the school recorded its highest-ever admissions this year, with 90 students joining class eight. Among them are four sets of twins. "To ensure individual attention and minimise confusion, we have placed each twin in separate sections. Twins often wear similar clothes and carry identical belongings, which can confuse teachers or lead to playful pranks. Separating them allows us to focus better on each student," he explained. Adding to the fun, the school plans to host a special twin-themed activity during children's day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Neuestes Schweizer Hörgerät ist genial und sogar unsichtbar Gutes Hören Undo "We want to make learning engaging. One of the games will involve students identifying each twin by name. It is fun and helps everyone bond," the headmaster said. Yenmoor is not just any village; it holds cultural significance in Tulunadu as the place where the legendary twin heroes, Koti and Chennaya, are believed to have died in combat. Their 'Adi Garadi' still stands there, adding a historical layer to the school's unique twin story. The headmaster credits the surge in admissions to the school's active promotion of science and tech-based learning. "Last year, we hosted a science mela that drew nearly 100 students from nearby areas. Every classroom is now a smart class, equipped with projectors and digital tools. Last year we had 53 admissions; this year it rose to 90, possibly the highest among govt and private schools in the area," he said. Total strength of the school is 230 students. It places strong emphasis on extracurricular activities, including sports, culture, and overall development of the school. Students have even participated in state-level events and won awards, other than winning district-level prizes. The faculty too have been winning prizes in various events. Amid this, the school is in need of more development, including better playground and a toilet block.
