Saudi Arabia seizes 1.5 million pills of Captagon hidden in tables

The National22-05-2025

Saudi Arabia on Thursday announced the interception of 1.5 million Captagon pills in Riyadh hidden in a shipment of tables. The Ministry of Interior said the operation led to the arrest of three Syrians and one Saudi citizen. The shipment's country of origin was not disclosed. 'The General Directorate of Narcotics Control seized 1,520,000 tablets of the narcotic substance amphetamine hidden inside a shipment of tables in the Riyadh region,' a statement read. 'The intended recipients were arrested in the Riyadh and Eastern regions and include three Syrian nationals and one Saudi citizen." Security officials urged citizens and residents to report any information related to drug trafficking or distribution. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have stepped up efforts to combat the smuggling of Captagon, an amphetamine-like stimulant that has raised alarm across the region due to its widespread use. Syria was the region's primary producer of Captagon until the fall of former president Bashar Al Assad in December, although he had denied his government's involvement. The new administration has pledged to crack down on the production and trafficking of the drug. In 2021, it was estimated the Syrian government generated more than $5 billion from the Captagon trade. The drug is transported to some Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, leading to a string of high-profile seizures. In February, Saudi authorities arrested 15 state employees in connection with three criminal networks involved in drug trafficking. A Ministry of Interior official said a total of 19 people were detained in the Asir, Jazan and Eastern provinces. The groups were allegedly involved in smuggling drugs across the kingdom and laundering the proceeds. Those arrested included five Interior Ministry employees, seven from the Tax and Customs Authority and three from the Ministry of Defence. A month earlier, Saudi Arabia executed six Iranians convicted of drug smuggling, state news agency SPA reported, an act that prompted protests from the government in Tehran. In 2023, Saudi authorities launched a widely publicised anti-drugs campaign involving raids, arrests and public awareness drives.

Dubai: Man sentenced to life, another to 6 months' jail for drug charges

A 45-year-old Asian man identified as M.K.S. has been sentenced to life in prison for selling drugs to another man during a car meetup in Dubai's Jebel Ali Industrial Area. The Dubai Court of First Instance also sentenced the second man, who bought and consumed the drugs, to six months in jail. Both men will be deported after serving their terms. According to case records, the arrest took place in December last year after Dubai Police received a tip-off that the second defendant was using and possessing narcotics in the area. Investigators confirmed the information and obtained a warrant from the Public Prosecution to arrest him. A team of officers tracked the suspect and found him inside a vehicle with M.K.S. When police moved in and searched them, they found substances suspected to be narcotics in their possession. A plastic bag with more of the same substance was found with M.K.S. The suspects were immediately taken to the General Department of Anti-Narcotics, where samples were collected, and the seized material was referred to the forensic lab for testing. The first defendant, M.K.S., was charged with drug possession and trafficking, while the second man faced charges of possession and consumption.

Tunisia ranks 2nd in Africa and 62nd globally in Energy Transition Index

Tunis – Tunisia has made significant progress in the global energy transition landscape, climbing 27 spots to rank 62nd worldwide out of 118 countries in the 2025 Energy Transition Index (ETI), published by the World Economic Forum (WEF). This marks a notable improvement from its 89th position in 2024, making Tunisia the second-highest ranked country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. With an overall score of 54.6 points, Tunisia stands out for its steady advancements toward a more sustainable and secure energy system. The Energy Transition Index (ETI) provides a data-driven framework to assess how 118 countries are positioned to navigate the evolving energy landscape. It measures both system performance (security, equity and sustainability outcomes) and transition readiness (enablers of progress, including regulations and political commitment, finance and investment, education and human capital, infrastructure, and innovation), resulting in an ETI score. According to the report, Tunisia demonstrates strong preparedness to accelerate its transition to renewable energy, particularly in the structure and readiness of its energy system. The country performed well in areas such as system performance, security, sustainability, and equity, despite ongoing needs to strengthen governance and enhance innovation and investment. In the MENA region, Tunisia ranks just behind Saudi Arabia (60th with 55.0 points) and ahead of the United Arab Emirates (48th with 58.4 points). On the African continent, Nigeria leads at 61st with a score of approximately 54.8, followed by Tunisia. Other African countries trailing behind include Namibia (64th), Mauritius (69th), Morocco (70th), Egypt (74th), South Africa (79th), Kenya (88th), and Algeria (89th). Côte d'Ivoire completes the African top 10 at 90th globally. Tunisia's detailed scores are: System Performance (Security, Sustainability, Equity): 59.7 Transition Readiness (Governance, Infrastructure, Innovation, Investment): 46.9 Commenting on the ETI ranking, Director of Solar Energy at the National Agency for Energy Conservation (ANME) Nefaâ Baccari underlined that Tunisia's progress is both significant and expected, showing nearly a decade of sustained national efforts toward energy transition. He cited ongoing reforms, such as the establishment and updating of the regulatory framework and the simplification of administrative procedures. "The installed solar energy capacity in Tunisia currently stands at around 700 MW (across solar, wind, hydro, etc.) and is expected to reach 1,000 MW by the end of 2025," Baccari told TAP. He emphasized that the country is now beginning to reap the benefits of these long-term efforts, and that their impact will become increasingly visible each year. Tunisia remains committed to achieving its energy transition goals by 2035 and ultimately reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. © Tap 2022 Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (
