Arab and regional FMs back Syria's unity, condemn Israeli strikes
RIYADH — Foreign ministers from 11 Arab and regional countries reaffirmed their support for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity while strongly condemning continued Israeli attacks on Syrian territory.
The ministers — representing Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Bahrain, Türkiye, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Egypt — issued a joint statement following two days of intensive consultations aimed at supporting Syria's stability and ending external interference in its internal affairs.
The ministers emphasized their unified stance in supporting the Syrian government's efforts to restore security and order throughout the country.
They welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Suwayda province and called for its full implementation to protect civilians, reestablish state authority, and preserve national unity.
The statement also praised Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa's commitment to holding accountable those responsible for recent violence in Suwayda and voiced support for national efforts aimed at reinforcing the rule of law and promoting reconciliation.
Condemning Israel's repeated airstrikes as flagrant violations of international law, the foreign ministers warned that these aggressive actions pose a direct threat to Syria's sovereignty and risk destabilizing the region.
They stressed that Syria's security is a vital pillar for broader regional peace and must not be compromised by continued hostilities.
The statement urged the international community to step up efforts in supporting Syria's reconstruction and called on the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities by ensuring Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Syrian territories, halting its violations, and implementing relevant international resolutions, particularly UNSC Resolution 2766 and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
The ministers concluded by reaffirming their collective commitment to coordinated Arab diplomacy that prioritizes Syria's sovereignty, unity, and long-term stability.

Israel denies reports of overnight strikes in Syria
JERUSALEM: Israel on Friday denied reports on the Syrian state news agency that it had conducted further air strikes near the Druze-majority city of Sweida late the previous day. 'The (Israeli military) is not aware of overnight strikes in Syria,' a spokesperson told AFP. Israel bombed the Syrian army in Sweida and Damascus earlier this week to pressure the Islamist-led government to withdraw its troops from the Druze heartland around Sweida following deadly sectarian clashes. Syrian troops pulled out on Thursday.

Israeli strikes on Gaza kill at least 14 people
Gaza's civil defense agency said on Friday that Israeli strikes killed 14 people in the north and south of the war-ravaged Palestinian territory. The emergency service said fighter jets conducted air strikes and there was artillery shelling and gunfire in the early morning in areas north of the southern city of Khan Yunis. Agency official Mohammed al-Mughayyir said 10 people were killed in two separate strikes in the Khan Younis area, with one hitting a house and the other tents sheltering displaced people. In Gaza's north, four people were killed in an air strike in the Jabalia al-Nazla area, he added. Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify tolls and details provided by the agency and other parties. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which asked for exact coordinates to look into the reports when contacted by AFP. The latest strikes came after Israel said it mistakenly hit Gaza's only Catholic church with a 'stray' round on Thursday, killing three and provoking international condemnation. On Wednesday, at least 20 people were killed in a crush at a food aid distribution center in the south of the territory run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas began in the Qatari capital Doha on July 6 to try to agree on a 60-day ceasefire after 21 months of hostilities. The war was sparked by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 which led to the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Israel's retaliatory military offensive has killed at least 58,667 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry in Gaza.
