Bhubaneswar: BJP on Tuesday suspended the primary membership of five of its members for their alleged role in Monday's brutal assault on BMC additional commissioner Ratnakar Sahu.
The five suspended included the three apprehended on Monday and two more who were arrested on Tuesday.
"BJP president Manmohan Samal suspended the five from their primary membership based on allegations of their indulgence in violence in BMC," a communication from BJP state headquarters read.
The two arrested on Tuesday were Sanjib Mishra and Sachikanta Swain. Earlier, Aparupa Narayan Rout alias Jeevan Rout, Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra and Debashis Pradhan had been arrested for their alleged role in the assault.
The arrests were made based on video and CCTV footage, DCP Jagmohan Meena said. "If involvement of more persons is known during the course of investigation, the number of arrests will go up," Meena added.
On Monday, six miscreants barged into the grievance hall of the BMC, dragged Sahu out by the collar, and beat him up mercilessly in full public view following a purported phone conversation with a local BJP leader. Video footage showed Sahu, an Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer, being punched and kicked by the men as he was dragged out of the office in the presence of BMC employees.

Condemning the attack, the OAS association has decided to go on mass leave across the state from Wednesday. "We are not satisfied with the action taken so far by the police," said All Odisha OAS association secretary, Bijoy Swain.
Executive body members and representatives of the association also visited BMC headquarters to express solidarity with Sahu. "We came to boost our friend's morale since he is in trauma and shock.
We will discuss separately our next course of action," said OAS association president Jyoti Ranjan Mishra.
On Tuesday, BMC employees came to the office wearing black badge, while commissioner Rajesh Patil wore a black shirt as a mark of protest. Patil also reviewed security arrangements on the office premises.
"We may revamp the security system and bring in a practice to check the entry of unauthorised persons," said Patil following a meeting with senior BMC officers.

Tripura Chief Minister To Expand Cabinet Tomorrow: Report

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha would expand his council of ministers on July 3, sources said on Wednesday. Sources said that on the advice of the Chief Minister, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu would administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new minister at the Raj Bhavan. One probable name -- Kishore Barman -- is doing the rounds about the possible minister. BJP MLA Barman was elected in the 2023 Assembly polls from Nalchar constituency in Sepahijala district. As per the constitutional mandate, the size of the council of ministers is 12, including the Chief Minister. One ministerial berth has been lying vacant. The sources said that at least five BJP MLAs are the contenders for the ministerial berths. On March 8, 2023, the BJP and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) coalition government led by Saha came to power for the second consecutive term. The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), headed by former royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, contested the 2023 Assembly polls separately but in March last year, after signing a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government, joined the BJP-IPFT coalition government, adding a new twist to Tripura politics. Accordingly, two TMP MLAs -- Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma -- were inducted into the ministry. The IPFT currently has one minister -- Sukla Charan Noatia -- in the 11-member council of the ministry. The BJP-IPFT alliance had retained power in Tripura by winning 33 seats in the 60-member Assembly. The TMP, which contested the Assembly elections in 2023 for the first time, won 13 seats of the 42 seats it contested, emerging as the second largest party after the BJP. The CPI-M won 11 seats in the elections while the Congress bagged three. The CPI-M-led Left Front and the Congress had a seat-sharing arrangement for the elections. The TMP became a political force in April 2021 after it wrested power in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. The politically important TTAADC has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura's 10,491 sq km area, and is home to over 1,21,6000 people, of which around 84 per cent are tribals.

Speeding SUV crashes into house injuring residents

Lucknow: A speeding SUV, allegedly with a BJP block chief sticker and an Uttarakhand number plate, rammed into a house in Santguru Ravidas Nagar late Tuesday leaving two residents injured and triggering a political row. The vehicle ploughed through a shop front and boundary wall around 1:50 am, crashing into the living quarters of Vijay and his wife, Gyanmati. The couple's shop and household items were severely damaged while Vijay and their son, Deepak, suffered minor injuries. The vehicle also hit and injured one of its passengers, but the remaining three occupants, including a woman, fled the scene, said police. The incident took place under the Hazratganj police station limits. SHO Vikram Singh said an FIR was registered based on a written complaint from Gyanmati. The vehicle was seized, and legal action is underway under BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 125(b) (causing damage), and 324(5) (causing hurt by dangerous means). "Four people, including the driver, have been booked," he added. Police also recovered liquor bottles and other intoxicants from the SUV. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was being driven recklessly at high speed. "There were three men and a woman inside the vehicle. All appeared intoxicated. One remained inside the vehicle with injuries while others managed to escape," a senior officer at the scene said. The Congress party accused the BJP of promoting a culture of impunity. "Beer bottles on the dashboard, drunk BJP men fleeing after wrecking a house—this is the true face of the ruling party," the UP Congress posted on X.

Bombay HC dismisses petition against demolition of century-old building housing Jimmy Boy

Mumbai: Bombay high court on Wednesday dismissed a petition by occupants of a dilapidated building in Fort challenging BMC notices to immediately vacate and pull down the structure. The building housed the iconic Parsi restaurant Jimmy Boy. "Today the situation is of fait accompli. It has gone completely out of hand… It is not new to the municipal jurisprudence that ruinous dilapidated buildings were required to be demolished/removed. The present building cannot be an exception," said Justice Girish Kulkarni and Arif Doctor. The petition was by Vikas Premises Co-op Housing Society - the owner of the 129-year-old ground plus four-storeyed building with 37 members, all of which are commercial/offices - to quash and set aside BMC's notices against the building and restore electricity and water. This report was re-confirmed by the June 25 report when the building was classified C1 as extremely dangerous to be evacuated immediately. They noted that after the June 2024 report, the occupants did nothing "than exploiting the building and recklessly using the same, leaving the building to be deteriorated. " The duty to maintain the building was of the petition association of persons with "prominent commercial establishment and a restaurant being situated in the building with large business turnover." The petitioner relied on BMC's June 20 notice to submit a structural audit report within 30 days. The judges noted that a May 2024 structural stability report showed the building was in fact C1 category but the petitioners did not refer to it. "…this amounts to material suppression," they added. The judges referred to a judgment in suo motu PIL initiated after the Jilani Building collapse in Bhiwandi, which killed 38 people, and a similar tragedy in Malvani where 12 lives were lost. "What is paramount for the Court to consider is the safety of human lives… Even persons occupying adjoining buildings, passers-by on the busy road have rights not to get affected in any manner by a building collapse. There cannot be any guarantee whatsoever when the building would collapse," they said. The judge said the petitioner is before HC is "too late" in time to contend that it would make an attempt to repair the building. They refused to allow members to access it to retrieve their belongings. They directed the petition to pay Rs 5 lakh cost to the cancer ward of KEM Hospital.
