AI Will Save Dating Apps. Or Maybe Finally Kill Them

WIRED10-02-2025
Feb 10, 2025 6:00 AM A slew of tools—from Iris Dating to Grindr's forthcoming 'wingman'—promise that they can increase your odds of finding someone with AI. So far, the results are mixed. ILLUSTRATION: ALEKSANDRA BOKOVA
Sebastian has no problem with artificial intelligence. At least, not if it can help the San Francisco thirtysomething connect with more bubble-butt users on hookup apps like Grindr. 'If the AI can find someone I can just do the work with, I'm fine,' he says. 'No talk. Just push-ups.'
WIRED went looking for love and found that modern romance is a web of scams, AI boyfriends, and Tinder burnout. But a smarter, more human, and more pleasure-filled future is possible.
Lucky for Sebastian, Grindr aims to please. Machine-learning features are prominent on the app's product road map for 2025. CEO George Arison believes the addition of AI tools to the app, which largely caters to LGBTQ+ singles, could prove beneficial for users looking to discover new people worth messaging or possibly connecting with again. Further in the future, the app hopes to release a 'wingman' chatbot, currently being beta tested by a limited number of users, that will provide tailored advice and even suggest date spots.
As the generative AI race heated up following OpenAI's release of ChatGPT in 2022, execs at many dating app companies looked to integrate the technology into their user experiences. Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd pitched the idea of AI dating personas automatically interacting on behalf of users. Her app is currently working on AI-powered profile creation and messaging options. Not to be left out, Tinder dropped a tool in 2024 designed to help you pick the best profile photos; it plans to roll out AI-assisted matches later this year.
Late last year, Hinge CEO Justin McLeod promised the app would soon be using the tech for everything from making matches to AI coaching. 'While AI is not going to be a panacea when it comes to the very deeply and personal problem of love,' he told investors, 'I can tell you that it is going to transform the dating app experience.'
Several AI-focused newcomers have also entered the fray in recent years. These tools focus more on AI advice than using machine learning to build networks of eligible daters. Rizz (yes, really) went viral for helping users on existing dating platforms role-play different responses to matches, earning an international following. Hell, even the Hawk Tuah girl released a dating advice app, called Pookie Tools, which included a flirt meter, height detector, and bald predictor.
AI, if it hasn't already, is coming for your swipes. It couldn't be a better, or worse, time. Many people feel like the current ways dating apps connect them with others aren't successful, but they're still looking online for love—and sex. As generative AI has seeped into all parts of online life, being able to discern what's genuine has only gotten harder. Adding bot-on-bot action to the mix sure doesn't sound like the answer. But if it's not, is there anything that can save digital dating from itself?
Of all the new tools out there, Iris Dating might be the one for those already deep into AI-assisted meetups. With over a million downloads from the Google Play Store since 2019, Iris is busy. It seemed like a good place to start if I wanted to find out whether all these AI widgets were worth it.
After downloading the app, Iris asked for my location and a few scant details about who I was hoping to be matched with. Then, without warning, a disembodied woman's head popped up on the screen and encouraged me with her robotic voice to take a photo of my face for verification purposes and to keep the app a 'safe space.'
The last phase of the setup involved swiping left and right on stock images of people's faces until the app, supposedly, figured out what profiles matched my true '#AttractionDNA.' Despite choosing men and women of various racial backgrounds during the swiping, most of the matches Iris connected me with were women living in the Philippines. Iris CEO and founder Igor Khalatian explained over email that this was likely due to the app recently going viral with Filipino users. He added that the company is working on a better balance for these connections.
One person I connected with, Chloe, was an avid user of the app and thought the vague AI aspect was cool and beneficial.
'Yeah, it's helpful,' she told me. 'Because you can have some good friends on here.' Despite using the app for the past six months and enjoying the conversations, Chloe hadn't yet met up with any of her matches in person. (All user names in this story have been changed to preserve anonymity.)
Another one of the women, Althea, was new to the app, using it alongside other options like Bumpy and OkCupid. Althea didn't really care much about the AI aspect of Iris. 'I don't know,' she says. 'I just guess I can find a serious relationship here maybe.'
As I spoke with more women on the app, it was fairly clear that many of the users hewed closer to Althea's point of view than to Chloe's. Connecting with the right person through a hookup or dating app feels like a numbers game to many people as they juggle multiple accounts. Ultimately, everyone feels like they're algorithm chum even before they get into AI tools. These users are willing to show up wherever it seems like other people worth finding might be hanging out.
Some of the Grindr users that I reached out to in San Francisco were similarly ambivalent about the app's plans for AI features, and almost no one had heard about the wingman chatbot, despite living in America's tech capital. As long as it doesn't interfere too much with their core goals on Grindr, this subset of users didn't seem to care either way about new tools.
Another group of users were turned off to learn about the plans for more AI features. 'I am philosophically very anti-AI,' Tomás told me. 'Part of relationship building—be it sexual, romantic, platonic—involves dealing with friction. I think the more organic approach is to not have AI involved.' While Tomás acknowledged that AI features might be potentially helpful for other users, he doesn't see the tools as aligning with his personal beliefs or real reason for using the app: sex.
I messaged Sebastian again to better understand his perspective, curious if he had other thoughts about AI tools, dating apps, and hookups that he wanted to share. 'Yes, man. Many,' he wrote, before dropping four huge, blue-bubble messages in our chat together. His answer listed four pros (better matches, improved safety, conversation starters, profile optimization) and four cons (lack of authenticity, privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, overreliance on AI), organized neatly into lists and accompanied by emoji. It's immediately clear what Sebastian is up to, so I asked if that answer was generated by AI. He quickly responds, 'Yes. So, you get me?'

5 Ways ChatGPT Can Help You Build A 6-Figure Business Faster

5 Ways ChatGPT Can Help You Build A 6-Figure Business Faster Building a business is hard work, especially for entrepreneurs who are navigating the early stages of business growth. Time and money are the most valuable resources, and often the scarcest. Many small business owners spend too much time on administrative tasks, stay stuck in analysis paralysis, or are overwhelmed with marketing and keeping up with trends. If you're not using ChatGPT, you are leaving money on the table. Using a resource like ChatGPT can be a game changer. ChatGPT is a productivity accelerator. With the right prompts and strategic use, ChatGPT can help you make money faster, help you make smarter business decisions, create content, and move from idea to execution faster. Here are five practical ways you can use ChatGPT to grow your business to six figures and beyond, faster: To consistently get your content created from scratch can take hours every week, and many entrepreneurs find this task time consuming. Since content creation is necessary for visibility, you must generate it. When you use ChatGPT to draft blog posts, newsletters, lead magnets, and social media it takes a fraction of the time and allows you to focus more time on the activities that will push your business forward. Marketing is no longer a task for large agencies. With ChatGPT you can use it as your marketing partner to brainstorm ideas and create a solid marketing campaign, test your messaging, and build marketing calendars on demand. This allows you to save money on expensive marketing costs. For many entrepreneurs, writing sales copy can be challenging to write. ChatGPT can generate compelling email sequences, could outreach messages, landing page copy, and answers objections with ease. It proves to be a valuable tool in your sales efforts in a fraction of the time. Entrepreneurs are using ChatGPT to boost internal productivity, from summarizing meetings to outlining standard operating procedures. Some use it as a daily planner, asking for help prioritizing tasks. Others use it to draft proposals, create SOPs, or write job descriptions. It's like having an executive assistant who works 24/7 and never takes a sick day. One of the most overlooked applications of AI is its ability to help entrepreneurs validate business ideas and move them forward quickly. Instead of sitting on a new offer or product for weeks, ChatGPT can help test the concept, explore the target market, and generate a lean business plan. Founders can use it to build out SWOT analyses, pricing strategies, competitive positioning, and launch plans, which helps cut off weeks of the development timeline. The bottom line is that ChatGPT cannot replace judgment, creativity, or leadership, but it can enhance those skills. ChatGPT offers entrepreneurs a powerful way to save time, increase output, and stay competitive in a fast-moving digital world. As AI tools improve, the advantage will go to those entrepreneurs who use the technology well.

Everyone is saying AI will reshape banking. A new report forecasts exactly how much.

A new report attempts to put hard numbers on a question hanging over every Wall Street corner office: just how much of banking work will AI actually change? Artificial intelligence is on track to redefine 44% of the work done at banks by 2030, according to ThoughtLinks, an independent consulting firm. ThoughtLinks — which is led by founder and CEO Sumeet Chabria, a former tech and operations COO at Bank of America and a Wall Street veteran — mapped nearly 5,000 individual banking "processes" to see which roles or units at banks will experience the most upheaval in their roles. ThoughtLinks found that tech, engineering, and infrastructure—collectively considered one sector — would be most susceptible to transformation, with a projection of 55% of the work involved in that sector being redefined by 2030. It's a logical outcome, considering how many of the tasks in these fields are precisely the kinds that automation is best suited to handle. Front office, client-facing sectors are hardly immune. Commercial banking could be redefined by as much as 49% by 2030, wealth management to the tune of 42%, and investment banking by as much as 33%, according to the report. Wall Street banks are investing heavily to compete. JPMorgan has deployed a large language model suite to its 200,000 employees, while Goldman Sachs has rolled out its own ChatGPT-like sidekick, GS AI Assistant. Citigroup also last week announced a new leadership team to drive AI strategy for its nearly quarter-million workers worldwide. It's important to note that these numbers do not reflect ThoughtLinks' predictions about how many jobs could be lost or created as a result of AI — rather, they look at how much of the work done by those who work in banks could be done differently thanks to the implementation of artificial intelligence. To assess how much each banking process could be redefined, ThoughtLinks developed a framework that maps what bank employees do to nearly 5,000 individual "processes." "'Redefined' reflects substantial AI-enabled, process-level change via automation, resequencing, elimination, or redesign," the firm wrote in its report. In an interview, Chabria said that breaking finance jobs down to their most basic components would be critical to understanding how to retrain workers in the face of the AI revolution. "Clearly, you've got to keep the level of agility," he said, "because things are going to change." Chabria shared three examples with Business Insider of how he anticipates sectors to respond to AI-driven changes. We got a look at snapshots for commercial banking, investment banking, and wealth management. Take a look at what's already transforming, what will be adapted by 2030, and the parts of the job that may stay mostly in the hands of humans for now. Commercial banking: 49% redefined by 2030 What's already being automated: First-generation banking advisor copilot services are now live, helping bankers obtain insights on clients, quickly summarize notes or files, draft basic memos, or flag policy exceptions. Some manual workflows — like creating spreadsheets, drafting emails, and navigating legacy systems — are being replaced. This reduces time doing manual work, as well as human error. Customers have access to virtual AI-enabled assistants on corporate banking systems that give them personalized insights and enable them to do routine transactions more quickly. What is expected to be redefined by 2030: Client onboarding: GenAI will help guide client onboarding conversations and tailor explanations, while the next iteration of AI will likely be able to verify forms and assess risks. Banks will leverage AI to assess small business creditworthiness to expand credit access. Banks will use AI to adjust loan pricing, fee structures, and product terms based on clients' behavior, financial patterns, and market conditions. AI tools will help detect some breaches and generate internal alerts in real time, increasing security 24/7. What is likely to resist being redefined by AI: Large corporate lending will still require human credit judgment and board oversight. Banks will need to rely on legal, tax, risk, and structuring teams. Investment Banking: 33% redefined by 2030 What's already being automated: Drafting documents like prospectuses or pitchbooks is being digitized. Generative AI tools can now pull in some market data, past deals, financial comps, and company-branded slides to build draft pitchbooks in minutes. Internal AI copilots are accelerating deal prep. Bankers can now use GPT-based tools to instantly summarize earnings calls, analyst reports, and client financials. Generative AI tools can now review documents, flag missing disclosures, and summarize new regulatory changes. What is expected to be redefined by 2030: Banks will leverage AI to simulate investor demand or model pricing scenarios for equity and debt offerings. (Final allocation will remain human-led.) AI will help bankers test thousands of ways to structure a deal by adjusting debt, equity, pricing, and covenants to find the right balance for clients. What is likely to resist being redefined by AI: Final IPO and syndicate pricing will remain human-led. Setting the price for a new issuance will require banker judgment, market feel, and live investor feedback. Winning mandates and advising the C-suite will remain relationship-driven and led by humans, who will use AI to enhance their knowledge or judgment and land new mandates. Wealth Management: 42% redefined by 2030 What's already being automated: AI copilots can now answer questions, generate meeting prep docs, and summarize client portfolios — in seconds. Financial planning is faster and becoming more scalable. Tools powered by generative AI can aid advisors in building personalized plans that simulate life events, goals, and risk tolerance without starting from scratch. Client reporting is now becoming personalized with custom commentary on investment performance, market moves, and risk tailored to each client's portfolio. What is expected to be redefined by 2030: Tax management will become more automated and timely. AI will help tailor advice and investment strategies to reflect individual preferences, financial behavior, and goals. On the flip side, clients may use AI to manage their wealth in their own portfolio with smart triggers. What is likely to resist being redefined by AI: Client engagement and coaching will remain human. During market downturns or personal events, clients still want empathy, reassurance, and value judgment that only a trusted advisor can provide.

Ready to talk to Ernie? DeepSeek's latest rival from Baidu is here

Chinese search giant Baidu, known for its search technology, has made its Ernie large language model open source as of June 30. It's a shot across the bow of DeepSeek, China's premier LLM, which has seen unprecedented success since it debuted in December 2024. It's also a big change of approach for Baidu. The company had previously been vocal in its defiance of moving to open source, working to keep its business model proprietary. DeepSeek and other international rivals like ChatGPT have proven that being open source can lead to a more impressive LLMs, and still be lucrative. While the change could not be as monumental as the arrival of DeepSeek, it could have major ramifications for AI. 'This isn't just a China story," Sean Ren, associate professor of computer science at the University of Southern California and Samsung's AI Researcher of the Year told CNBC. "Every time a major lab open-sources a powerful model, it raises the bar for the entire industry." Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "While most consumers don't care whether a model's code is open-sourced, they do care about lower costs, better performance, and support for their language or region," Ren added. "Those benefits often come from open models, which give developers and researchers more freedom to iterate, customize, and deploy faster." Baidu's move to open source could also help provide more competition to its aforementioned rivals. If Baidu's model is able to offer comparative features to rivals, but at a lower price, it could be seen as a moment that reverberates through the industry. Earlier this year, Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, discussed open source models on Reddit. 'While OpenAI has open-sourced models in the past, the company has generally favored a proprietary, closed source development approach,' Altman explained. '[I personally think we need to] figure out a different open source strategy,' he added. 'Not everyone at OpenAI shares this view, and it's also not our current highest priority … We will produce better models [going forward], but we will maintain less of a lead than we did in previous years.' Expect Baidu's model to be under plenty of scrutiny, too. This week, Germany moved to ban DeepSeek for transferring data to China. In AI, the term open-source refers to systems where the code and training data is made publicly available. This is becoming more common recently, with the likes of OpenAI, Deepseek and Gemini all releasing open-source versions of their products. With an open-source AI model, the public can inspect, adapt and distribute the code in their own way. This speeds up the process for smaller companies who aren't able to put in the huge amount of work at the start that is needed.
