Grading the Phillies-Twins blockbuster trade for Jhoan Duran
The Philadelphia Phillies have World Series aspirations in 2025. If they want to achieve that goal, everyone around baseball knew that they were in need of some pitching help, particularly in the bullpen. On the eve of the MLB trade deadline, they took one step closer to making a championship run a reality. The Phillies traded for a star closer, Jhoan Duran, from the Minnesota Twins in a blockbuster move.
This was exactly the type of splash that Phillies fans were hoping for. It is also the type of move that tends to make a difference come October.
In return, the Twins will receive prospects Eduardo Tait and Mick Abel. They were the fourth and sixth-ranked prospects in the Phillies' farm system.
So, the question begs: who won this trade? Did the Phillies land a sure-fire closer? Did Minnesota set itself up well for the long term?

The Phillies land a legit closer
The Philadelphia Phillies have been among the MLB's best teams for the last handful of years. Yet, they have consistently failed to live up to expectations when the postseason rolled around. One of the glaring reasons was their bullpen, which is arguably the most important part of any team come October.
With the Duran deal, they land one of the best closers in baseball this season. Duran has converted 16 of 18 save chances for the Twins, posting a 2.01 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Many believed he was deserving of an American League All-Star nod this season, but it was not to be. Nevertheless, the flame-throwing righty is having a solid year.
Meanwhile, the Phillies' bullpen was in desperate need of an upgrade. Jordan Romano leads the team in saves with eight, but he did not last long in the role. Jose Alvarado has seven, but he has never really been effective as a ninth-inning stopper.
Matt Strahm has done a decent job since taking over as closer. But he is viewed more as a setup man and can now move back to that.
But this move may very well be a rental. Duran signed a one-year, $4.125 million contract with the Twins last offseason, per Spotrac. But the cheesesteak-eating fans will not care if he helps bring a World Series title to Philadelphia.

Twins acquire two legit prospects for Duran
As much as the Phillies needed relief help, the Twins needed to reboot. They took a big step in the right direction on Wednesday, adding Bait and Abel.
Bait is a hard-hitting catcher who is still only 18 years old. He was the fourth-highest-ranked prospect in Philly, so a lot of people like his potential. Minnesota has not had a catcher they can rely on consistently behind the dish and at the plate since Joe Mauer. This was a good get for the future.
But Abel, despite being a slightly lower-ranked prospect, may prove to be the bigger piece. He is currently pitching in Triple-A but has already seen some big league action. He made his MLB debut earlier this year, tossing six shutout innings with nine strikeouts against the Pittsburgh Pirates back in May.
In his last two starts, Abel got roughed up by the New York Mets, who pulled off a trade themself, and the San Diego Padres. But the talent is undeniable.
Considering Jhoan Duran was highly unlikely to return to Minnesota after this season, landing two talented prospects is nothing to scoff at. Plus, if you look deeper at Duran's season, his strikeout numbers are down, and his K/BB ratio is a career-worst.

Jose Alvarado apologizes to Phillies, fans as he nears return from 80-game PED suspension
José Alvarado apologized to the Philadelphia Phillies and their fans Tuesday as the hard-throwing lefty reliever is nearing his return from an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. In an Instagram post, Alvarado wrote he never intended to take a prohibited substance and is "fully aware that using prohibited substances is wrong." "I made a mistake and therefore, I have faced the consequences set forth by MLB," Alvarado wrote. "Going forward, my focus is on working hard to help the team win." Alvarado was suspended for 80 games on May 18 after he tested positive for exogenous testosterone, a banned substance. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the positive test was caused by a weight loss drug Alvarado took in the offseason. Alvarado accepted the suspension. "It's not something he did knowingly," Dombrowski said in May. "I believe that, the way he talked to me." The suspension makes Alvarado ineligible for the postseason. He's eligible to return to the Phillies on Aug. 19, when the club hosts the Seattle Mariners. MLB rules allow him to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before his return. He returned to Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday for the first time since his suspension. "There is always a lesson to be learned in every mistake," he wrote Tuesday on social media. The bullpen Alvarado returns to isn't the one he last pitched in when he was the Phils' best high-leverage reliever. At the time of his suspension, the 30-year-old had a 2.70 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 20 innings. His sinker averaged 99.3 mph in 20 games, up from 97.8 mph last season. The Phillies acquired Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins before last week's MLB trade deadline, meaning the club now has a set closer. When Alvarado returns, he'll join a remodeled Phillies bullpen with Duran as the closer and veteran David Robertson in the mix. Robertson signed with the team last month and is eligible to return Tuesday, but will need more time in Triple-A. Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm are now the Phillies' primary setup relievers. "What it does is it moves everybody up an inning, that's all," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Monday. "You still have Kerkering and Strahm as your two main setup guys and then you have a combination of [Max] Lazar and [Tanner] Banks and [Jordan] Romano and those guys in front of them. It just makes the bullpen a little lengthier. It gives us more depth." No one knows what to expect from Alvarado when he returns, but if he's close to his old self, the Phils will have another high-leverage arm they can use down the stretch. The Phils are seeking to make their fourth straight postseason appearance and are currently 1 1/2 games ahead of the New York Mets in the NL East race. "It's been a long 80 days without him. Not only is he talented, but he brings so much energy to the field and the clubhouse. It's just really good to have him around," Thomson said. "I think he helps, but I think they've done pretty well without him, to tell you the truth. We've won a lot of games without him, but he's certainly going to bring more energy and he's going to bring another really, really good arm." Here's Alvarado's full statement posted Tuesday: "May 18th was a very difficult day for me. That day, MLB announced the positive result of a doping test conducted in March 2025. "I am fully aware that using prohibited substances is wrong and I would never intend to do so because I have always had great respect for the game, my organization, my teammates and the fans, all of whom I want to offer my sincere apologies. "I made a mistake and therefore, I have faced the consequences set forth by MLB. "Going forward, my focus is on working hard to help the team win. "Once again, I offer my deepest apologies to the Phillies organization, my teammates, my family, my country Venezuela, the City of Philadelphia and the fans who have always supported me, especially the children and young people. "There is always a lesson to be learned in every mistake. "I thank God for giving me the strength to overcome this situation. I am glad to be back and ready to support the team."

By agreeing to this max extension, Doncic has proven that he is committed to being the face of the Lakers for the foreseeable future. He is now under contract in Los Angeles through the 2028-29 NBA season. He will be eligible for a five-year contract that will exceed $400 million in 2028 should he utilize his player option. It was expected that the two sides would agree to a new contract extension with Doncic finishing his Jordan Brand tour in Los Angeles before returning to Europe for the EuroBasket 2025 tournament with Slovenia. After being traded to the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks in one of the most shocking and historic trades made in NBA history before the trade deadline, Doncic instantly paved a path for this organization to regain its footing in the Western Conference championship equation. Many had questioned what this franchise would do once LeBron James retires, given their lack of a young core, and Doncic's arrival made the answer clear. James opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season and will once again be next to Luka on the Lakers' roster for what many have speculated to be his final season in Los Angeles. Whether LeBron ultimately retires after the upcoming year or continues his career elsewhere is the question at large. Nonetheless, the Lakers have made it clear that they are committed to building their team around Doncic, and that is apparent with this new $165 million extension. ESPN was first to report Doncic's agreement with Los Angeles on Saturday. The Lakers' young star has the full support of new ownership led by majority owner Mark Walter, who is also in charge of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB, and this organization will continue to build a contending roster around him. This offseason, Luka was a leading voice in the Lakers' ability to land both Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart after they were bought out by the Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards, respectively. It is expected that the Slovenian star will continue to work closely with executive Rob Pelinka and the Lakers' front office when it comes to key roster decisions year after year. Doncic, 26, has cemented himself as one of the best basketball players in the world through his first seven NBA seasons. Aside from being named an All-Star and to the All-NBA list five different times, Doncic has also finished inside the top five of the MVP voting three different times. He won the league's scoring title with the Mavs during the 2023-24 season after averaging 33.9 points per game, the highest single-season scoring average since James Harden averaged 34.3 points per game with the Houston Rockets during the 2019-20 season. Last season, Luka was severely limited due to a left calf strain, and he played in a career-low 50 games. Even so, he still averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game between Dallas and Los Angeles, proving that he is one of the league's best all-around offensive weapons when healthy. This offseason, Doncic has devoted time to taking care of his body and using the trade as extra motivation to remain at his best conditioning level. 'Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better,' Doncic told Men's Health in an offseason exclusive detailing his body transformation. 'If I stop now, it was all for nothing.' All that matters to Doncic is performing at the highest level possible to contend for a championship. That is why he has been so devoted to getting in shape this summer, and that is why he will look to reach new heights during the 2025-26 season in Los Angeles. Only Doncic and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo have averaged at least 28 points per game in each of the last four seasons. He is also one of two players in the league to average at least 25 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists every year since the 2021-22 season, joining three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Doncic is now the only player on the Lakers' payroll past the 2027-28 season. The Lakers can be aggressive in their hunt for more star-level talent around Doncic over the next several seasons, as Los Angeles can open up over $100 million in cap space in 2026, which could then carry over to 2027 when All-Stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Donovan Mitchell, Karl-Anthony Towns, Tyler Herro, and Trae Young potentially hit the open market. With James' future past this season clouded, the Lakers have gone all-in on building a championship-caliber core with and around Doncic moving forward.
