
How engineers managed to get the power back on after Spain and Portugal's mass outage
States of emergency throughout Spain and Portugal are being lifted on Tuesday, except in Valencia, as the Iberian Peninsula starts to regain power after an unprecedented outage on Monday.
The outage hit Spain, Portugal, and parts of France just after noon on Monday, according to data from the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-e).
Dan Jorgensen, the EU Commissioner for energy and housing, said on X on Tuesday morning that the energy situation in Spain and Portugal is back to normal, noting that this incident was "the most severe for almost two decades in Europe".

While investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of the mass blackout, experts say restarting the grid after an outage is tricky and would have to strike a good balance or risk bringing about another.
So, how does the re-energising process work, and when can those living in the Iberian Peninsula expect full power to come back?
'Suddenly there's a flurry of alarms'
The transmission grid is the "backbone" of a country's electricity system, according to Spain's grid operator Red Electrica. It connects power generation stations to large consumers, distribution points, and other national energy production.
The grid is needed to transmit the energy created by electricity generation plants from location to location 'efficiently and safely'.
Spain's transmission grid has over 45,000 km of high-voltage line circuits, more than 700 substations, 600 bays, and over 200 transformers.
Portugal's grid, although smaller, has 9,661 km of circuits, and roughly 77 per cent of its energy produced on Tuesday was from renewables like solar and wind, according to data from Portuguese energy company, Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN).

Paul Cuffe, an assistant professor of electrical and electronic engineering at the University of College Dublin, said power grids are often synchronised or interconnected, which means that if "something untoward were to happen with the generator in Madrid, it can immediately be felt in Barcelona or Lisbon," he told Euronews Next.
System operators that control the power grid are looking to maintain the balance between how much power the grid supplies and how much is being consumed, he said.
To hit that balance, operators stay around the 50 hertz mark, he continued. The metric can tick slightly up or down without causing a risk of a blackout.
The failure of the Iberian grid likely happened quickly and unexpectedly, he said.
"Suddenly there's a flurry of alarms, [a system operator] blinks and looks at the display, where, for the last five years, there's been no hint of trouble… and [thinks] what on Earth was that?" Cuffe said.

A balancing act
After a blackout, the challenge of getting the grid back online starts.

A spokesperson for Eurelectric, the sector association that represents Europe's energy industry, said that the grid has to do what's called a "black start," where it uses "generation assets that don't require grid electricity to be started" to get the power back on.
In the case of the Iberian blackout, the association's spokesperson continued, this came in the form of hydropower, but can also be done with diesel or gas.
The electricity from these alternative sources is then fed into the grid and used to bring essential services, like hospitals or defense sites, back online.
From there, the energy is "slowly ramped up" and is 'carefully matched against additional demand brought onto the system,' Eurelectric continued.

"If the balancing is not nearly perfect, it can cause another outage".
The role of renewables
In 2024, Red Eléctrica announced that 56 per cent of Spain's power was produced by renewable energy.
The grid operator also confirmed on April 16 this year that they hit 100 per cent renewable energy supply.
On Tuesday, data from REN showed that at 6 pm CET, 77 per cent of the energy generated in Portugal was from renewables.

The introduction of renewables like solar and wind to the grid, coupled with new consumption patterns and big consumers, makes the grid system more 'complex' to balance, REN said.
ENTSO-e warned earlier this month that solar energy could be overproduced as the good weather starts to come.
To mitigate this, ENTSO-e said that transmission system operators would be setting up dedicated specialty teams to manage the power supply, through more flexibility with resources and information sharing over borders.
Euronews Next reached out to Spain's Red Electrica and REN to ask about what preparations were taken in response to ENTSO-e's warning, but did not receive an immediate reply.

Cuffe said that while the role of renewables is "relevant," he cautions that power grids have failed long before the inclusion of these new types of energy.
"It would be wrong to jump the gun. But it would [also] be wrong for me to take an overly defensive position for how dare they besmirch renewable energy," he said.
"That grid was at a very high renewable penetration, and that could be relevant".
What happens next?
Eurelectric said that as the power comes back, a safety check needs to be done to make sure nothing along the grid's power line was damaged or could lead to a further blackout.

Euronews Next also asked Red Electrica and REN whether these safety checks have taken place, but did not receive an immediate reply.
The grid will eventually come back to normal rates of power, Eurelectric said, and the time it will take depends on the severity and size of the outage.
There's still other investigations to come.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his Portuguese counterpart, Luis Montenegro, have asked the European Commission to deliver an independent report about the cause of Monday's blackout.

Commission official told Euronews
that it is not up to them to conduct the investigation. It will be led by a transmission system operator (TSO) from a member state that isn't connected to the incident and will have members from Spain, Portugal, and France on a panel to contribute their expertise.
The panel will have up to six months to deliver a fact-finding report about the blackout that will explain the causes of the incident and a series of recommendations.
Luis Calama, a judge on Spain's National Court, said that he will
launch a preliminary investigation
into whether the blackout may have been a cyberattack, despite many refutals by various government leaders that that is not the case.

Meta rebuffs EU's AI Code of Practice
US social media company Meta will not sign the EU's AI Code of Practice on General Purpose AI (GPAI), the company's Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan said in a statement on Friday. 'Europe is heading down the wrong path on AI. We have carefully reviewed the European Commission's Code of Practice for GPAI models and Meta won't be signing it,' he said, adding that the Code 'introduces a number of legal uncertainties for model developers, as well as measures which go far beyond the scope of the AI Act.' The Commission last week released the Code, a voluntary set of rules that touches on transparency, copyright, and safety and security issues, aiming to help providers of AI models such as ChatGPT and Gemini comply with the AI Act. Companies that sign up are expected to be compliant with the Act and can anticipate more legal certainty, others will face more inspections. The AI Act's provisions affecting GPAI systems enter into force on 2 August. It will take another two years before the AI Act, which regulates AI systems according to the risk they pose to society, will become fully applicable. OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has said it will sign up to the Code once its ready. Criticism from tech giants The drafting process of the Code was criticised by Big Tech companies as well as CEOs of European companies, claiming they need more time to comply with the rules. 'We share concerns raised by these businesses that this over-reach will throttle the development and deployment of frontier AI models in Europe, and stunt European companies looking to build businesses on top of them,' Kaplan said. The Code requires sign off by EU member states, which are represented in a subgroup of the AI Board, as well as by the Commission's own AI Office. The member states are expected to give a green light as early as 22 July. The EU executive said it will publish the list of signatories on 1 August. On Friday the Commission published further guidance to help companies comply with the GPAI rules.

Magnificent Seven widen gap over Europe's giants as AI race heats up
Europe is losing the AI race. The continent's largest companies are increasingly outpaced by their US counterparts—particularly in the rapidly evolving technological sector. While the broader European equity market has outperformed the S&P 500 so far this year, the continent's corporate heavyweights are falling behind in the global stock market hierarchy. The gap highlights a deeper transatlantic divide in innovation, private capital, and long-term competitiveness. As of mid-July, the combined market capitalisation of Europe's seven largest listed firms — SAP, Novo Nordisk, Hermès, ASML, LVMH, Roche and Nestlé — stands at $2.2 trillion (€1.73tr), virtually flat year-to-date. That puts the combined market cap of US 7 largest companies at $18,8 trillion vs. of EU's largest. By contrast, the US 'Magnificent Seven' — Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Broadcom (instead of Tesla) — have reached a cumulative valuation of $18.8tr (€16.12tr), up 10.2% since the start of the year. Tech dominance defines the US-EU divergence The divergence reflects the central role of technology and artificial intelligence in today's equity market leadership. Seven out of seven of the largest US companies are technology firms with significant exposure to AI infrastructure, cloud computing or data platforms. In Europe, just two companies in the top seven — SAP and ASML — are active in the technology sector, with the remainder concentrated in luxury goods, pharmaceuticals and consumer staples. Nvidia alone is valued at €3.59 trillion, larger than the combined market cap of Europe's top seven. Its dominance is tied to its role in powering AI infrastructure worldwide, from model training to real-time inference. 'While the others use AI to power their platforms and services, Nvidia supplies the very foundation on which those ambitions are built,' said Natalie Hwang, founder of Apeira Capital, in an emailed comment. 'It quietly enables the success of every other member of the Magnificent Seven, while remaining their most indispensable partner.' According to industry estimates, Meta, Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft are set to spend over $320 billion (€294 billion) on AI infrastructure in 2025, much of it focused on inference optimisation and hyperscale data centres. JP Morgan Chase's message to Europe: 'You're losing' JP Morgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon reinforced the broader concerns over Europe's global position during remarks at a recent event in Dublin hosted by the Irish foreign ministry. 'Europe has gone from 90% of US GDP to 65% over 10 or 15 years. That's not good,' Dimon said. 'You're losing.' He pointed to overregulation, fragmentation, and weak productivity as structural weaknesses, and urged European leaders to act on the 2024 report led by former ECB President Mario Draghi, which recommended €800 billion in annual investment to strengthen industrial competitiveness. Dimon added: 'We've got this huge, strong market and our companies are big and successful, have huge kinds of scale that are global. You have that, but less and less.' Bitcoin bubble? How much more is it expected to rise in 2025?
The price of Bitcoin (BTC) is expected to reach a high of $162,353 this year (€139,148), before it settles at around $145,167 (€124,418). That's according to UK fintech firm Finder's latest survey, collecting price predictions from 24 crypto industry specialists. Within responses, high and low estimates range widely, and the most optimistic predictions expect a peak price of $250,000 this year. The average lowest price prediction sits at $87,618, with some predicting that Bitcoin will fall as low as $70,000. The cryptocurrency has recently reached $120,000 from just below $100,000 at the end of last year. 'There are a number of factors increasing demand for Bitcoin, including clearer and more favourable regulations, increased utility such as payments, and changing economic conditions,' crypto exchange Zondacrypto's CEO, Przemysław Kral, told Euronews. He added that regulations such as the EU's MiCA contributed significantly to the recent rally. The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) sets uniform EU market rules for crypto-assets. This, coupled with an increased interest from institutional players, largely in the form of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), made crypto more accessible for many. Cryptocurrency-based ETFs make it easier for investors to gain exposure to cryptocurrencies without having to buy them directly. These funds have exploded in popularity since Bitcoin ETFs began trading in US markets last year. Is there a bubble around Bitcoin? While the integration of crypto into mainstream finance has genuinely boosted interest towards Bitcoin, there is a possibility that a so-called bubble is forming. In other words, the price is being 'blown up' by investor interest without fundamentals supporting it. According to Northeastern University's crypto expert and professor of international business and strategy Ravi Sarathy, big institutional investors, including MicroStrategy, have been accumulating large pools of this asset, and it is possible that they are propping up the price of the cryptocurrency. MicroStrategy holds a Bitcoin stash worth approximately $65bn. After the previous reluctant approach from institutional investors, "new US measures authorising Bitcoin ETF funds have made it easier and more convenient for both institutions and retail investors to invest some of their resources in these higher risk/higher return Bitcoin vehicles", Sarathy told Euronews Business. Bitcoin issuance has a ceiling of 21 million, driving rising demand in the face of a limited supply. 'This has also led to the rise of Digital Asset Treasuries (a corporate strategy, ed.) which seek investor funds to invest in a variety of cryptocurrencies and tokens, including Bitcoin, a further fillip to demand, and fuelling rapid Bitcoin price appreciation,' Sarathy said, adding that after a short reaction to further US legislation, longer-term price appreciation could still continue. How Washington is fuelling Bitcoin's rally Interest in Bitcoin has increased dramatically since US President Donald Trump widely campaigned to make the US the world capital for crypto. The US administration's support for crypto assets reached new highs recently as the government dubbed this week 'Crypto Week'. Lawmakers in the House are debating a series of bills that could define the regulatory framework for the industry in the United States. 'Bitcoin and crypto in general, is being propped up by the Trump administration, ironically given its initial promotion as an alternative to government-backed currencies and support from libertarians,' said John Hawkins, senior lecturer at the University of Canberra. He believes that the token 'lacks any fundamental value, and after 16 years, it has still failed to meet its initial aspiration to be a common means of payment. It remains a speculative bubble.' Others see Trump's support as a reason to buy. Rouge International & Rouge Ventures' managing director, Desmond Marshall, said that 'Together with Trump's embrace of digital crypto assets, his sons dealing with huge amounts of crypto projects and the strong US dollar, the US government is already buying large reserves of BTC. This is supported by many businesses venturing into this realm with enterprise crypto strategies.' The most bullish crypto specialists, expecting a large price increase, bet that Bitcoin could reach $250,000, buoyed by institutional demand. 'Corporate and institutional demand is not slowing down while retail is still absent and nation state adoption is just getting started,' said Martin Froehler, CEO of Morpher trading platform. Bitcoin's price has increased nearly 25% since the beginning of the year, despite ongoing uncertainties related to tariff tensions, the conflict in the Middle East, and the lack of monetary policy easing in the US. Is it the right time to buy Bitcoin? Around 61% of the experts surveyed believe that it is the right time to buy. However, caution is always important, according to crypto exchange Zondacrypto's CEO, Przemysław Kral. He told Euronews: 'With such hype comes the need for caution. No one knows whether the price will go up or down. We always recommend doing your research and getting educated on Bitcoin before investing in it.' Kadan Stadelmann, the CTO at Komodo Platform, believes that Bitcoin is going to steadily grow in value over the next six months before it returns to a bear market (when investors mainly sell instead of buy). 'Considering Bitcoin touched $110,000 already, and there's still at least six months left in this bull run…I expect the peak around Q1 of 2026 and a bear market to follow,' said Stadelmann. When asked what their expectations were for the very long term, the crypto experts surveyed by Finer said Bitcoin could reach values of $458,647 by 2030 and surpass $1 million by 2035. How quantum computing might impact Bitcoin's cryptographic security The vast majority of the crypto specialists surveyed (79%) see quantum computing as a threat to Bitcoin's cryptographic security, as quantum computers could potentially break the encryption standards that secure cryptocurrencies. A quarter of the experts (25%) think that quantum computers will be able to crack Bitcoin within the next five years, and another 25% find that it's a realistic possibility within the next five to ten years. The remainder (29%) say it'll take longer than ten years. Just 8% say that quantum computers pose no threat, and only a third of the experts are confident that the Bitcoin community is somewhat prepared for this threat.
