On3 analyst Oklahoma has a quarterback advantage in 2025
When the Oklahoma Sooners made the offseason addition of former Washington State quarterback John Mateer, they made a massive upgrade at one of the most important positions on the team.
In 2024, for the most part, OU was at a QB disadvantage against almost every team they played, especially in the SEC. That's extremely uncommon for a program that is used to having the better player under center. J.D. PicKell, who covers college football for On3 Sports, believes that the script has flipped in Norman, due to the presence of Mateer.
"The schedule for Oklahoma and the quarterback matchups they have, I think it's very, very sneaky that Oklahoma, I think, is gonna have the advantage in a lot of those games," PicKell said on his podcast, "The Hard Count with J.D. PicKell.
Going through OU's 2025 schedule, PicKell proceeded to say which games he believes the Sooners have the QB edge in, excluding matchups against lesser competition like Illinois State, Temple, and Kent State.
PicKell believes Oklahoma has the quarterback advantage against Michigan (Bryce Underwood), Auburn (Jackson Arnold), Texas (Arch Manning), Ole Miss (Austin Simmons), Tennessee (Joey Aguilar), Alabama (Ty Simpson/Austin Mack/Keelon Russell) and Missouri (Beau Pribula). He declined to say the Sooners have the QB edge against South Carolina (LaNorris Sellers) and LSU (Garrett Nussmeier).
"We just went through that entire schedule and there's two games that you're talking about a superior quarterback for the opposite side, as we sit here right now," PicKell said.
By all reports, the Sooners look to have a quarterback in the saddle again who can change games for them in a positive way. Mateer and new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle are trying to make sure that Year 2 in the SEC goes differently than Year 1 did for Oklahoma and head coach Brent Venables.

After reportedly working with famed offensive line guru Duke Manyweather over the offseason, Collins is said to be back in game shape. At 33, it might be now or never for Collins. It's been reported the workout went well and Collins is signing with the Cowboys. He has the ability to play inside and outside and could be a solid swing lineman for the Cowboys in the preseason and possibly beyond. Collins' friendship with Dak Prescott runs deep and putting a happy ending on the saga in Dallas is just what the doctor ordered for this drama-filled time of the year (see also: Trevon Diggs and Micah Parsons). Time will tell what Collins has left in the tank and what kind of role he'll play n 2025. But getting a shot at redemption is truly something to cheer for. Former Texas A&M QB discusses nearly traumatic leg injury, and his road back to the field
Former Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson, who transferred to College Station after two seasons with LSU before the 2022 season, left the program, gaining immense respect from the Aggie fan base who watched him play through several injuries, including broken ribs at the end of the 2023 campaign. Johnson, who is the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson, has never shied away from competition, choosing Texas A&M over a host of programs that would have started him right away, instead of playing behind former A&M QBs Haynes King and Conner Weigman to start his Aggie career. However, both players dealt with injury issues, vaulting Johnson into the starting lineup. In two seasons at Texas A&M, Johnson appeared in 12 games, while his best string of performances came during the 2023 season, throwing for 1,452 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions, while, as I stated above, played with broken ribs during the close road close to Ole Miss, which is likely resulted in former head coach Jimbo Fisher's dismissal. With Conner Weigman returning, paired with current starting quarterback Marcel Reed behind him, Johnson once again entered the transfer portal, choosing North Carolina as his final collegiate destination. However, during the Tar Heels' opening game of the 2024 season against Minnesota, Johnson's brutal leg injury ended his year before it truly began. After a video showed the senior signal caller looking healthy during one of his many throwing sessions this offseason, Johnson recently spoke to the media during the first week of North Carolina's preseason, revealing that his road back to health was more complicated than all of us had assumed. According to journalist Chris Mason, Johnson had five surgeries after his leg injury, which occurred back on August 29, 2024. 'There was a point in time where I thought I was going to lose my leg.' Max Johnson's toughness has never been in doubt, and this further proves that first-year North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick is in good hands at the position, especially from a leadership perspective. North Carolina will open the 2025 season at home against TCU on Monday, September 1. Spartans commit, 3-star LB Braylon Hodge picks up official MSU offer
Michigan State football has officially offered three-star commit linebacker Braylon Hodge of Englewood, Colo. Hodge announced on Friday that he has received an official offer from the Spartans. August 1 is the first day for schools to extend official offers to prospects in the 2026 class. Hodge ranks as the No. 40 linebacker in the 2026 class, according to 247Sports. He also ranks as the No. 8 player from Colorado and has a recruiting rating of 88 on 247Sports. Hodge was one of the first commits in a massive month of June recruiting for the Spartans.
