
North Wales school wins Tasty Careers Schools Challenge
The challenge is supported by the Welsh Government-funded Sgiliau Bwyd a Diod Cymru / Food & Drink Skills Wales programme and Careers Wales.
This year's Schools Challenge was backed by Castell Howell Foods, Leprino Foods, Kepak, Dunbia, and hospitality group Seren.
The finals took place on March 5 at Conwy Business Centre, where teams of pupils pitched their final products, including a sheep milkshake, crempog with pureed parsnip, Welsh rarebit bites, and a strawberry oat snack bar.
Denbigh High School emerged victorious with their product, 'Muffin' Around' – a selection of red pepper and spinach muffins.
The judges were impressed by the concept, taste, and sustainability of the muffins.
The competition, which has been running since 2018, has seen previous winners' products professionally produced and sold.
This year's challenge required pupils to create a new healthy, sustainable product for a food and drink manufacturer.
Tasty Careers 2025 attracted the highest number of entrants since its inception in 2018, with over 1,200 pupils from schools across Wales taking part.
The North Wales finalists included Alun School, Denbigh High School, Ysgol Glan Clwyd, Rhyl High School, Ysgol Friars, Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, Ysgol Eifionydd, and Ysgol Bro Idris.
Teleri Owen, a teacher at Denbigh High School, said: "The competition has given the pupils an insight into the food industry.
"They had thoroughly enjoyed working with each other in a different scenario to the classroom."
Louise Cairns, CEO for NSAFD/Tasty Careers, said: "Congratulations to Denbigh High School for their outstanding performance in this year's Tasty Careers Schools Challenge.
"The judges were highly impressed with all the entrants but their creation really stood out for sustainability, commercial viability – and of course, taste."

UK's Domino's Pizza cuts profit forecast as staffing costs climb
Aug 5 (Reuters) - Britain's Domino's Pizza Group (DOM.L), opens new tab lowered its annual core profit forecast on Tuesday, as an increase in employment costs compounded troubles for the fast-food chain already reeling from weak customer demand. The group, which operates under the umbrella of U.S.-based Domino's Pizza (DPZ.O), opens new tab in the UK and Ireland, saw lower-than-expected store openings in the first half of the year, as its franchisees were wary of opening new stores amid higher staffing costs. "There's no getting away from the fact that the market has become tougher both for us and our franchisees, and that's meant that the positive performance across the first four months didn't continue into May and June," CEO Andrew Rennie said in a statement. Britons are also choosing to stay in, rather than dine out, as firms pass on higher costs to customers by raising prices. Domino's Pizza Group expects underlying core profit between 130 million pounds and 140 million pounds ($172.72 million -$186.00 million) for 2025. It previously expected to meet market expectations of 140.8 million to 149.7 million pounds. ($1 = 0.7527 pounds)

30mph road reversals cost Wrexham Council £400,000
The Welsh Government introduced a default 20 mph speed limit on restricted roads across Wales on September 17, 2023. The decision was met with mass opposition and in April 2024, Welsh Government announced a review of the 20mph scheme. Following extensive member engagement and public consultation, a list of 52 sections of highway which met the Welsh Government criteria for reversion back to 30mph was presented to the Executive Board in February 2025 - and the Executive Board approved the list in full. In May, the B5605 Wrexham Road in Johnstown became the first road in North Wales to be reverted back to 30mph. Wrexham Council initially said it planned to have all the 52 roads reverted by the end of June. However, in an update provided earlier last week, councillor David A Bithell, lead member for strategic transport, said he hoped the majority of roads would have been completed by August 1. Figures from a Freedom of Information request revealed that the process of reverting roads back to 30mph cost £400,000 in total, which has been paid for by the Welsh Government. In addition, around 400 new 30mph signs were bought by the local authority in order to complete the reversals. Read more A spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: "All quotes for the 30mph contract included every aspect of the works including removal of old signs and unneeded post, erecting of new posts, signs, and traffic management, therefore we don't have individual costs for each part of the works. "A majority of the old 30mph signs we originally removed were either damaged, faded or didn't meet the current reflectivity standards, therefore we needed to purchase approximately 350-400 new 30mph signs. "The overall cost of the 30mph works will be around £400,000 once everything is completed. "All costs for the 30mph reversion have been funded by Welsh Government grants."

Welsh Hospitality 'Risks Being Taxed Out of Existence By Business Rates Proposal'
UKHospitality is calling on the Welsh Government to extend business rates support to include hospitality, saying the sector 'risks being taxed out of existence'. A Welsh Government consultation on non-domestic rates is due to close on August 12. The Local Government Finance (Wales) Act 2024 provided the Welsh Government with the ability to introduce differential multipliers for Wales using regulations. The current consultation seeks views on the Welsh Government's proposals to introduce differential multipliers from 1 April 2026. The Welsh Government is proposing to introduce a lower multiplier for small to medium sized retailers. It says the proposal 'recognises the unique challenges faced by 'bricks and mortar' retail shops, not least through their exposure to competition from online retailers'. It says its proposal 'would also be expected to indirectly benefit other sectors of the high street economy, through the visitor footfall supported by the maintenance of a viable retail sector'. However UKHospitality Cymru says the proposals have 'sidelined the sector' and added that hospitality in Wales is now 'facing substantial and potentially damaging business rates hikes'. It said: 'That lack of support will mean a typical high street pub will be paying an extra £6,800 per year in business rates; a typical country hotel would see an increase of around £17,000 per year; and a city-centre hotel would see nearly £50,000 extra in costs. Some of Wales's finest accommodation attractions will see even bigger increases, damaging domestic, international and business tourism.' The trade association added that it is seeking 'optimal support to stall any proposed legislation to tax Welsh hospitality businesses out of existence'. It is calling for Welsh business leaders to join it in responding to the Welsh Government's consultation. David Chapman, Executive Director of UKHospitality Cymru, said: 'This is a critical issue that will threaten the very existence of pubs, bars, hotels and restaurants across the UK. 'Hospitality must, without a shadow of a doubt, be included in any and every business rates support package, if we are to avoid the sector being taxed out. Failing to recognise and implement support for hospitality would risk the Welsh Government undermining their policy objectives, effectively leading to the gutting of the high street as we know it. 'We urge all hospitality businesses across Wales, large or small, to back our calls for support from Government, by submitting their views to the Senedd before this crucial consultation closes on 12th August. 'It's vital that not only Welsh hospitality business receive business rates support, but also our counterparts in England and Scotland.'
