The Welsh Government introduced a default 20 mph speed limit on restricted roads across Wales on September 17, 2023.
The decision was met with mass opposition and in April 2024, Welsh Government announced a review of the 20mph scheme.
Following extensive member engagement and public consultation, a list of 52 sections of highway which met the Welsh Government criteria for reversion back to 30mph was presented to the Executive Board in February 2025 - and the Executive Board approved the list in full.
In May, the B5605 Wrexham Road in Johnstown became the first road in North Wales to be reverted back to 30mph. Wrexham Council initially said it planned to have all the 52 roads reverted by the end of June.
However, in an update provided earlier last week, councillor David A Bithell, lead member for strategic transport, said he hoped the majority of roads would have been completed by August 1.
Figures from a Freedom of Information request revealed that the process of reverting roads back to 30mph cost £400,000 in total, which has been paid for by the Welsh Government.
In addition, around 400 new 30mph signs were bought by the local authority in order to complete the reversals.

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: "All quotes for the 30mph contract included every aspect of the works including removal of old signs and unneeded post, erecting of new posts, signs, and traffic management, therefore we don't have individual costs for each part of the works.
"A majority of the old 30mph signs we originally removed were either damaged, faded or didn't meet the current reflectivity standards, therefore we needed to purchase approximately 350-400 new 30mph signs.
"The overall cost of the 30mph works will be around £400,000 once everything is completed.
"All costs for the 30mph reversion have been funded by Welsh Government grants."

SNP ministers spent £1.3 million on a report into introducing a new welfare system despite knowing the scheme was 'doomed to fail'. The Scottish Government commissioned an expert panel to look at how it might implement a policy of bringing in a minimum income for all Scots. Now figures, released under Freedom of Information rules, show the costs for the expert group's final report were £280,000. The group was supported by a government secretariat of five civil servants, making their salary costs over the time of generating the report around £260,000 a year. It took from August 2021 to May 2025 - three years and ten months - to develop the findings. This is despite the fact the Holyrood Government does not have devolved all the reserved powers necessary to introduce a minimum income guarantee. 'We've paid a significant sum for a report we don't agree with and that was doomed to fail, are now likely to distance ourselves from and now are going to be lobbied to implement it. 'They should immediately rule out a minimum income guarantee – an absurd and eye-wateringly expensive policy that they have no powers to introduce. But they also owe Scots an explanation for why they ever devoted public money and civil servants' time to this idea, and a detailed account of how so much taxpayers' cash was wasted on this ridiculous report.' Using the pay bands of each civil servant in the secretariat, the salary costs per year would amount to around £260,000 annually. Supporters claim it would make for a fairer society with a reduced level of poverty if every Scot had a definite basic income, with the suggestion it would 'would effectively end poverty for those in receipt'. Opponents, however, claim it is too expensive a policy to implement and raise concerns that people would not work if they did not have to earn additional income. The report from the independent expert group, which included representatives from 16 groups such as social mobility organisations, universities and charities, recommended the base income be £11,500 for a single adult. A couple would receive £20,000 while a couple with one child or a lone adult with two children would receive £28,000. As their earnings rose to exceed the minimum income threshold, the payments would taper off. At the launch of the report in June, Satwat Rehman, one of the members of the group and chief executive of One Parent Families Scotland, said: 'A minimum income guarantee would provide a lifeline, ensuring no single-parent household falls below a dignified minimum income – whether in or out of work, studying or training – and ensure families and children thrive and not just survive.'

Tories demand Reeves ‘urgently rule out' investment tax hikes

The Tories claim scrapping the £500 dividend allowance will drag an estimated 5.22 million more people into paying investment levies. The party is seeking to pile pressure on ministers after a memo sent by Angela Rayner to Ms Reeves, in which the Deputy Prime Minister suggested a series of tax hikes, was leaked to the press. In the document, Ms Rayner proposed removing the dividend allowance to raise around £325 million a year in revenue, as well as axing inheritance tax relief for AIM shares and increasing dividend tax rates, the Telegraph reported. Shadow chancellor Mel Stride said: 'The Government need to urgently rule out these tax hikes on savers and investors before speculation causes further economic harm. 'Labour don't understand how business works and how to create growth. More taxes on investment, entrepreneurship and saving are the last thing our economy needs right now.' The Government's U-turns over welfare reform and winter fuel payments have left the Chancellor with a multibillion-pound black hole to fill, fuelling speculation that she will seek to raise revenue through tax hikes. The Tories claimed axing the dividend allowance would drag 'an estimated 5.22 million more people into paying dividend tax'. This figure appears to be based on an assumption that at least 8.82 million people in the UK hold shares that pay dividends. Some 3.6 million are already subject to dividend tax, according to data obtained by investment platform AJ Bell through a Freedom of Information request. The Chancellor last year said she would not be 'coming back with more borrowing or more taxes' after her first budget but has since refused to rule out raising specific levies, saying it would be 'irresponsible' to do so. A Labour Party spokesperson said: 'The Conservatives have some brass neck. They've still not apologised for the damage caused by the Liz Truss mini-Budget, nor the £22 billion black hole they left – which hammered firms and families across the country. 'Labour is doing more to support business than the Tories ever could. 'We've already delivered three historic trade deals and four interest rate cuts – to reduce costs and put money back in people's pockets.'
