Second attempt in 2 weeks: 2 gibbons smuggled from Bangkok seized at Chennai airport
CHENNAI: Customs sleuths at Chennai airport seized two gibbon monkeys from a flyer who arrived from Bangkok, Thailand, marking the second thwarted attempt to smuggle gibbons in the last two weeks via Chennai.
The flyer landed in Chennai on a Thai Airways flight in the early hours of Tuesday and was intercepted by customs sleuths on suspicion. Upon examination of his checked-in trolley bag, two pet bags were found concealed beneath chocolates and other food items.
Customs sleuths found two live monkeys of different species, identified as an Agile Gibbon (Hylobates agilis) and an Eastern Grey Gibbon (Hylobates funerus), hidden inside the pet bags.
They were seized, and the wildlife bureau was informed. They identified the monkeys and provided suitable care. The monkeys were deported on the same flight back to Thailand, and the flyer was remanded in judicial custody.

Customs sources stated that the flyer was a mere carrier engaged by a smuggler, and further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the latter's identity. On June 18, customs sleuths also seized an Agile Gibbon and an Eastern Grey Gibbon from a flyer who landed here from Thailand.

Since smugglers attempted to smuggle the same gibbon species within a gap of two weeks, customs sleuths suspect that there might be a specific demand for the species in the illegal pet market. Both gibbon varieties, in high demand in the international pet trade, are endangered, and the Agile Gibbon is on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Meanwhile, customs sleuths also seized 700 grams of gold from three different flyers. On June 30, customs sleuths secured a flyer at the domestic terminal at Chennai airport. He travelled from Dubai to Dhaka, then to Kolkata, and reached Chennai by an
Indigo
flight. About 409 grams of gold he had hidden in his rectum was seized. On Tuesday, a flyer from Singapore was secured for smuggling 150 grams of gold, and on Wednesday, another flyer from Dubai was caught with another 150 grams of gold.

Road rage at 136 km/hour speed to chase ex's wife: Indian-origin woman Sharanjit Kaur jailed in New Zealand for killing man
Sharanjit Kaur was sentenced to four years in prison after killing a man in road rage in New Zealand. (Photo: Waikato Times) An Indian-origin woman, Sharanjit Kaur, has been sentenced to four years in jail after she pleaded guilty to reckless driving causing death of Jonathan Baker. The road rage took place on June 27 last year and the sentence was handed down by Hamilton District Court, New Zealand. According to reports, Kaur was triggered after she saw a photograph of her ex, referred to Mr R in court documents, with his wife and family at an Indian restaurant. It is not clear whether the man was her ex or current partner. Kaur confronted the man and then started following the wife, referred to as Mrs R. Court documents revealed that Kaur followed Mrs R at high speed, tailgating, brake-checking, and attempting to intimidate her. She drove recklessly on the wrong side of Boyd Road at speeds between 125–136 km/h before smashing into Baker's vehicle. He died instantly and Kaur sustained minor injuries. 'Mistress chasing the a bad novel' 49-year-old Baker's widow Andrea told the court how devastated she was when she received the news of her husband's death. She said her Christian faith prompted her to forgive Kaur. 'In forgiveness for me comes freedom in the long run... 'The mistress chasing the wife... is beyond comprehension, it's like a bad novel'. She said a drunk or drugged driver-or even an angry wife chasing a mistress - would have made some sense. Kaur's lawyer Anjeet Singh said she knew nothing she could say would alleviate the Bakers' pain, but her client 'accepts full responsibility'. She said the photo 'led to a psychological collapse... Something more than rage'. The photo brought forth years of turmoil and uncertainty around her eight-year relationship, she said pleading for home detention, which was rejected.

Anti-Ragging Act: Kerala HC tells govt to share copies of draft amendments with stakeholders
Kochi: High court on Thursday directed the state govt to share copies of the draft amendments to the Prohibition of Ragging (Kerala) Act and Rules with stakeholders, including the counsels for Kerala Legal Services Authority (KeLSA) and University Grants Commission (UGC), within a week. The directive was issued by the bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice C Jayachandran in a petition filed by KeLSA, which sought a direction to the govt to reassess the Act and frame rules to ensure the effective eradication of ragging. During hearing, director general of prosecution (DGP) placed on record a communication from the home department additional chief secretary stating that the subcommittee constituted for preparing the draft amendments had submitted the same. It was further informed that the home department is currently seeking comments from stakeholder departments before proceeding with the finalisation of the amendments. However, HC observed that the drafts had not been placed before the bench and accordingly directed the state to furnish copies to the counsels for KeLSA and UGC to facilitate their suggestions. Meanwhile, KeLSA's counsel requested that the proposed amendment include a broad definition of 'educational institution' to curb the menace of ragging both within and beyond campus premises. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo KeLSA had filed the public interest litigation in response to the ragging incident at the Government College of Nursing, Kottayam, where junior students were reportedly subjected to severe physical abuse, including the tying of dumbbells to their private parts.
