Arch Manning ahead of John Mateer in On3 SEC QB Rankings

Oklahoma and Texas will constantly be compared to one another. It's the fate of long-time rivals. The national perception is that the Longhorns have opened up a considerable gap on the Sooners heading into 2025. After back-to-back playoff appearances for Steve Sarkisian's crew, it's understandable. But OU is hoping to get back on top of a rivalry that they've dominated for much of the last 25 years. But a lot of that will hinge on two first-year starting quarterbacks for their respective programs. By most estimations, Texas has the edge on that front as well. Former five-star Arch Manning is taking over for Quinn Ewers, and John Mateer is taking over for Jackson Arnold. The two programs had very different 2024 seasons, and they have very different expectations for 2025. Texas is expected to contend for a national title with Manning, while the expectations for Oklahoma aren't as lofty around the country. But as individual players, they're being ranked much closer. In Andy Staples' latest quarterback rankings for On3, he has Manning at No. 4 with Mateer right behind him at No. 5. Manning's slot is a much more reasonable starting point for a quarterback who's only started two games and looked like an inexperienced player in his appearance against Georgia last season. Mateer was also ranked No. 5 in USA TODAY Sports SEC quarterback power rankings and had Manning at No. 1. In my latest quarterback rankings from the end of June, I had Mateer at No. 3 and Manning at No. 6. Experience matters, and Mateer has the edge there. According to Staples, it all hinges on Mateer making the jump to the SEC. There have been examples of players from Group of Five conferences making the move to the SEC and having success, even as recently as 2024 with Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia and Arkansas' Taylen Green. Mateer's challenge is leading the way for a completely rebuilt offense after a 2024 season that was far from what's expected at the University of Oklahoma. It's a tall task, but one his offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and the Oklahoma staff believe he's capable of accomplishing. Mateer has the tools to be one of the best in the SEC as long as he gets a little more help from the guys around him than last year's quarterbacks received. Blue Jays Make Pitching Announcement Before All-Star Game

Against all odds, the Toronto Blue Jays ended the 2025 MLB season's first half as a first-place club. The Blue Jays' journey to maintaining their two-game lead over the New York Yankees officially resumes on Friday at home against the San Francisco Giants, and Toronto already has a plan. Veteran starting pitcher Chris Bassitt, who pitched in relief against the Athletics on Sunday, will start this Friday's home showdown with the San Francisco Giants. Veteran lefty Eric Lauer and two-time All-Star José Berríos are expected to follow Bassitt in the rotation. It's been a mixed bag thus far for Bassitt, who entered the All-Star Break at 9-4 with a 104-29 K-BB ratio in 107 innings. However, Bassit's 4.12 ERA is essentially the same as last year's 4.12 and well above his career 3.64 mark. Bassitt has been far better at home than on the road, owning a 6-0 record and 2.81 ERA in 10 Rogers Centre starts. Conversely, Gausman has a 5.66 ERA in 49 1/3 away innings, and he's allowed eight homers. Luckily for Bassitt, his rotation spot should be safe if Toronto acquires another pitcher before the July 31 deadline. Lauer may be better suited for a long relief role, and Max Scherzer's 4.70 ERA in 23 innings doesn't inspire much confidence, especially with his 41st birthday later this month. Either way, the Blue Jays need Bassitt at his best in the second half. Only 5 1/2 games separate the first-place Blue Jays and fourth-place Tampa Bay Rays.
