'4 hours, 98 ambulances & 100 plus firefighters': How Ahmedabad swung into rescue efforts post plane crash
Speaking to the media, Pani recalled that he immediately left for the crash site upon receiving the first alert. 'Soon after I was informed of the incident, I received a call from the Chief Minister's Office, followed by a directive from the Chief Minister himself, instructing immediate response,' he said.
He emphasised that while en route to the site, he coordinated with all deputy municipal commissioners, district administration officials, fire, police, and health departments to activate a multi-agency response. 'Within minutes, the airport's fire team reached the crash site, and soon after, over 100 firefighters were deployed to begin firefighting operations,' Pani said.
He added that teams from the police, AMC, district administration, health services, NDRF, and SDRF were quickly mobilized and worked in close coordination. To facilitate rapid medical aid, a green corridor was created in coordination with the city's Police Commissioner, ensuring that injured passengers could be transported swiftly to Civil Hospital.
In total, 98 ambulances from both government and private agencies were dispatched to the site. Firefighters rescued over 30 people trapped in buildings adjacent to the crash site. Commissioner Pani also detailed the deployment of over 45 heavy rescue machines, including earth movers, bulldozers, JCBs, and Hitachis.
'Aircraft debris, including the wings obstructing roads, were cleared quickly, and damaged compound walls were removed to allow rescue vehicles access,' he added.
Highlighting the importance of real-time coordination in disaster management, he said.
'Senior officials from the CMO, Police Commissioner's office, District Collectorate, and other key government departments were present on-site, enabling seamless inter-agency collaboration.'
To support the families of victims, the administration set up a single-window system at Civil Hospital.
'This has ensured that grieving families can access essential documents, including death certificates, without unnecessary delays or distress,' said the Commissioner.

English-medium admissions double in a year in AMC schools
Ahmedabad: English-medium sections in schools run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have been registering a sustained increase in new primary school admissions with a growing number of parents now preferring English, the most widely spoken language in the world, as a medium of instruction. AMC data revealed that in 2024, 3,953 new students enrolled in English-medium sections in its primary schools, doubling from 1,967 students in 2023. Of these, 1,629 students joined pre-primary schools, while 2,246 were admitted to Class 1, reflecting a growing desire among parents to begin their child's English education early. Dr Lagdhir Desai, municipal school board administrative officer, says the demand has increased so rapidly that eight of the 55 English medium sections are now running at full capacity, with more than 400 students on the admission waitlist. "Parents are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that English opens doors to higher studies and jobs," Desai said. "This demand wasn't present a decade ago." 44 structures in airport funnel razed
Ahmedabad: The plane crash of June 12, one of the worst aviation disasters in India's aviation history, has prompted a series of measures. One of them is clearing structures that could pose a risk to planes. Soon after the crash, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), along with the city airport authority conducted a survey of structures around the airport. The survey identified 44 structures on different houses that could pose a risk to planes. AMC has since removed additional rooms, parapet walls, water tanks, and rooftop structures from 26 of these houses. Having a clear airport funnel zone, a designated corridor that aircraft use for takeoff and landing, is a critical component in air safety. Aviation authority notifications insist that airport funnels and their imaginary gradient should not be 'punctured' by structures or trees. An official from the AMC, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "The height of constructions around the airport is determined based on the funnel area for plane takeoff and landing. Most constructions near the airport's funnel area are legal, with plans approved by obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the Airport Authority of India. Representatives from the corporation and the airport management company conducted a survey of the funnel area, finding no obstructive structures in the landing funnel. However, in the take-off funnel area, 44 obstructive structures were identified on various houses in Meghani Nagar and Kubernagar, and demolitions have been carried out. So far, water tanks, room tops, and parapet walls have been removed from 26 houses."
