Sourdough dessert challenge ends in tears as beloved MasterChef Australia: Back To Win contestant is sent home

Daily Mail27-05-2025
MasterChef Australia: Back To Win said an emotional goodbye on Tuesday night's episode after a tricky pud packed the bags of a budding chef.
It was never going to be an easy challenge when O.MY restaurant's Blayne Bertoncello walked through the MasterChef doors, especially when he introduced his Variations of Sourdough and Strawberry with Elderflower and Balsamic dessert.
However, when Rue, Tim, Audra and Sarah were tasked with remaking the dish perfectly for five plates, the pressure was at an all time high.
It soon became clear, this pressure test wasn't going to be a piece of cake.
The dish included a strawberry sorbet which sat atop a sourdough-infused crème pâtissière, a strawberry gum emulsion, macerated strawberries, sourdough tuilles and fried elderflower crisps - all finished off with a balsamic gel.

As Rue, Audra, and Tim all struggled with their emulsion, which split and was too runny when compared to Blayne's, the temperatures began to soar in the kitchen.
In the end, it was the dessert queen herself Rue Mupedzi who was sent home over her grainy crème pat.
In tears, Rue told the judges that it had been an honour cooking for them and being on the show for a second time around.
'Just being called back among such amazing chefs made me realise I'm also part of the great people,' she shared.
Jean-Christophe Novelli sang high praises of the contestant and her presence on the show.
'You are unique, you've got the most amazing spirit and, for me, I believe you are a ray of sunshine in any kitchen,' he told Rue in a heartfelt speech.
Speaking of her final cook with 10Play, Season 15's Rue was left disappointed after being eliminated in a challenge she considered to be her bread and butter.
'I really felt like this was a cook that I was supposed to shine in, and I didn't,' Rue said.
'You are unique, you've got the most amazing spirit and, for me, I believe you are a ray of sunshine in any kitchen,' Jean-Christophe Novelli told Rue in a heartfelt speech
'I had done all these elements over a thousand times, and somehow that didn't show. You couldn't see that on the plate.'
On Sunday night's episode, another MasterChef Australia: Back To Win elimination saw a talented chef put down their skillet for the final time in an action-packed, temperature-rising cook-off.
It was a lobster wonton that sent this ambitious candidate home following a prophetic insight and a broth that fell short.
Seafood connoisseur Josh Niland challenged the MasterChef Australia participants with a dish famed for its easygoing nature - but easygoing it wasn't.
The task was to create a surf and turf dish, with the chefs expected to put their own spin on the iconic food combo.
Season 14 runner up Rhiannon Anderson, 48, who chose to make lobster wontons paired with beef broth, wasn't confident from the get-go, confessing in her piece to camera that she could be the one cooking for the last time in the MasterChef kitchen.
And after ending up in the bottom three with Tim and Darrsh, she was proved right.
'It has to come back to flavour and texture, which is why I'm so sorry to say this, Rhi. I'm sorry, you're going home,' Andy Allen told the chef.
An emotional Rhi dubbed her second time round on the show a 'bloody epic experience' as she held back tears.
'How many people get to come back to win and just do what I've just done? And I've had an absolute blast.'
She went on to say that she'd be heading home to her husband and hopping right back into the kitchen.
'I'll just have to go home to Deano and cook him something. Not quite as much fun, but anyway.'

Katy Perry gets STUCK in flying metal sphere and nearly falls out mid-air... after crying amid Orlando Bloom split

Katy Perry suffered a stage malfunction and narrowly avoided a disaster during her concert in Australia this week amid her Lifetimes world tour. On Sunday night, the singer was performing in Adelaide and being lifted in a floating metal sphere when the stage prop seemingly malfunctioned, leaving her stuck in the air. The floating orb then tilted, as seen in fan-taken footage posted on X, and it appeared as though she scrambled to hold on to avoid falling into the crowd. For several long seconds, Perry held onto one of the bars before the crew stopped the lights and music before rushing to help her. The pop star was quickly freed from the prop and saved — before later breaking down in tears onstage — but many of the fans took to social media to express how scared they were for her in that moment. Many fans also likened the situation to how Beyonce recently had trouble onstage too when the floating car she was riding in suddenly halted and tilted mid-performance and she had to stop her show during her ongoing Cowboy Carter tour. I was really scared 😢 — nasty (@aquitter25) June 29, 2025 Perry is currently on her Lifetimes Tour, performing a series of shows in Australia — which forced her to miss her close friend Lauren Sanchez's wedding to Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos in Venice over the weekend. Her now-ex Orlando Bloom attended the weekend-long festivities alone as a newly-single bachelor while Perry was in Australia with their four-year-old daughter Daisy. Perry kicked off their tour in Mexico City back in April and is set to conclude her tour in Abu Dhabi at the end of the year, on December 7. The Lifetimes tour is in support of her seventh studio album 143 and is her first headlining stadium tour in seven years since she last toured in 2018. While performing Down Under, Perry was seen fighting back tears while onstage as she thanked her fans for their support following her split from Bloom. She and the actor had been together for a total of nine years before their split was revealed late last month. As Perry took to the stage for the final show of her Australian leg of her Lifetimes world tour, she fought back tears as the show came to a close. In footage posted on X, she made a heart with her fingers, before struggling to hold back tears as she spoke to the crowd at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. While performing Down Under, Perry was seen fighting back tears while onstage as she thanked her fans for their support following her split from Bloom; pictured April in Mexico City 'Thank you Australia for always being there for me,' she said. It came just hours after Bloom shared a series of cryptic Instagram posts, sharing a quote from Gautama Buddha to his seven million followers. The quote that Bloom reposted read: 'Each day is a new beginning. What we do today is what matters most.' He additionally shared a separate slide which had another quote which was titled 'Daily Encouragement by Daisaku Ikeda.' The text read: 'The important thing is to take that first step. Bravely overcoming one small fear gives you the courage to take on the next.' Last week, it was revealed that the former couple called it quits after nearly a decade together. At the time, a source told Us Weekly: 'Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable,' while also adding that the separation has been 'not contentious' thus far. 'Katy is of course upset but is relieved to not have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life.' The Teenage Dream hitmaker — who is currently embarking on her Lifetimes Tour — was previously married to Russell Brand from 2010 until their divorce in 2012. The insider further added that the reported breakup had been 'a long time coming' and that their relationship had also been 'tense for months.'

Ninja's portable grill might be compact, but it can air fry, bake, and more

Ninja woodfire grill set-up It's simple to set up and needs minimal assembly. The side arms need to be attached to the main unit, but that was easily accomplished with the included Allen wrench. The grease tray also needs to be inserted into the back of the unit. From there, all that was left to do was unpack the included grill plate, griddle plate, and fryer basket. After less than five minutes, I was ready to go. Ninja woodfire grill design One of the key attributes of this grill is how compact it is. At just over 30 pounds and 18 inches wide by 13 inches tall, the grill's footprint is fairly small. Despite this, there is still cooking space across the 141-square-inch for multiple steaks, a whole chicken, or plenty of vegetable kebabs. The exterior of the grill is constructed from weather-resistant porcelain steel for outdoor use in all seasons. While it does get warm during use, it's not hot enough to cause concern. On the front of the grill is a full, easy-to-read control panel, with a dial to choose your preferred cooking method. From there, you can adjust temperature settings and the timer, along with selecting the wood-fired flavor setting to ignite the smoking function. The wood pellets are housed in a small pellet hopper on the right side of the grill, with an included scoop for simple measuring. Cooking on the Ninja woodfire grill Cooking on the Ninja woodfire is incredibly intuitive. Once you select the cooking method from the dial, the grill begins its preheating process. I found it heated up quickly, regardless of the setting, with an indicator screen and notification sound when it's time to add food. The timer indicates when to flip food through the screen, and there's a beeping sound as well. There are top and bottom heating coils to provide even heat distribution. The grill also has a fan, creating a convection environment. Grilling provided ease of use without worrying about a flame. Cooking asparagus on the grill plate was excellent, allowing for grilled flavor without any worry about thinner pieces falling through a grate. In comparison to a gas grill, I did notice a bit more moisture while cooking vegetable kebabs, because there wasn't anywhere for excess water from the included zucchini to go. Cooking a steak with the wood-fired flavor setting turned on provided great flavor and beautiful grill marks. When it comes to smoking, I can't say this grill achieves as good a flavor result as an alternative smoker option. However, for an all-in-one electric choice, it still gets the job done. You can smoke multiple chicken breasts or a small pork shoulder with a more subtle smoked flavor, while still achieving a tender pull-apart texture. I was impressed that the appliance heated to 350 degrees on the baking setting in less than five minutes, allowing for a variety of baking projects. Unfortunately, a larger 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish won't fit inside the grill, but a deep 8-inch by 8-inch baking dish will. I baked a strawberry apple crisp in the grill, but found that the top heating component browned the dessert too quickly. This is important to keep in mind for any food being cooked on the bake or roast setting. However, that can be alleviated by covering the dish with aluminum foil to slow the browning process on top. Ninja woodfire grill clean-up The included grill and griddle plates are ceramic-coated and nonstick, which means they're not dishwasher safe. However, I found it incredibly simple to clean these pieces after use. Even after making glazed vegetable kebabs, which resulted in a sticky residue on the grill grate, running it until hot water and wiping it clean with a sponge was a breeze.

Wimbledon goes walkabout! Cate Blanchett, Rebel Wilson and Russell Crowe serve up sophistication on Centre Court as Aussie stars lead arrivals on day two of Championships

Australia dominated the Royal Box at Centre Court on Tuesday, as Cate Blanchett, Russell Crow and Rebel Wilson led the stars arriving for day two of the Wimbledon Championships 2025. Used to blazing summers Down Under, the trio of Aussie movie stars appeared to fare much better at braving the sweltering heatwave during the outing at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The Met Office has said temperatures could hit 36C (97F) after Monday saw the hottest start to Wimbledon on record and a peak of 33.1C (91.6F) in London. Two-time Oscar winner Cate, 56, was the picture of elegance in a pale blue double-breasted blazer and matching plaid patterned trousers. She shielded her face beneath a pair of mirrored aviator shades as she took her seat, bringing along her mother June to watch the action. Fellow actress Rebel, 45, soon came to sit beside her, cutting a radiant figure in a lacy pink dress with gold studded heels. The couple, who wed last year in a ceremony in Sardinia, looked as loved-up as ever as they posed together before the afternoon of tennis kicked off. While Russell, 61, got suited and booted for the occasion, looking dapper in a classic black suit and collared white shirt. The Gladiator star added a boldly coloured and plaid patterned tie and orange tinted sunglasses, as he laughed with his fiancée Britney Theriot. Britney looked besotted as she cosied up to Russell, putting on a sophisticated display in a floral pink dress with a polka dot scarf. The couple, who started dating in 2020, sparked speculation they are set to tie the knot after the actress began stepping out with a diamond ring. They are thought to be eyeing up an Italian wedding after reportedly visiting a church during a visit to Rome last year, with an insider telling Woman's Day: 'Italy was always going to be their wedding destination. 'Every time they go there, they come back more in love. It's always been their dream to get married there.' British number one Jack Draper, now ranked fourth in the world, is facing off against Argentina's Sebastian Baez, after emerging as a genuine contender to lift the coveted trophy. Boulter took a prime spot in the stands around Court 18 to watch her beau take on Roberto Carballes Baena. But amid the sweltering Wimbledon heat, with temperatures climbing upwards of 31 degrees on Tuesday morning, the 28-year-old star sheltered from the sun under a purple and green Wimbledon-branded umbrella. De Minaur got off to a solid start against the World No 72, Baena, claiming the first set 6-2. Pegula, who was also sent packing at the French Open by world No 361 Lois Boisson last month, was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by the unseeded 24-year-old. The daughter of billionaire NFL owner Terry Pegula is enduring a disappointing 2025 so far after making it to her first Grand Slam final at the US Open last year, having also slipped out of the Australian Open in the third round. The surprise loss to Cocciaretto, who had never beaten a player ranked inside the top five before today, marks the nadir after her SW19 hopes went up in smoke in the very first round. It also goes down as her worst Grand Slam showing for five years, since she was eliminated in the first round at the French Open in 2020.
