Regina Urgent Care Centre forced to close early for second time in a month
Regina's Urgent Care Centre is back to operating on regular hours again after being forced to close early on Sunday due to a physician shortage – which has spurred questions from the NDP Opposition.
Sunday, July 6 marks the second time in less than a month that the facility was forced to close its doors early due to staffing issues. The facility normally accepts patients until 9:30 p.m. but was forced to close at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The centre was supposed to be operating 24/7 last fall. As the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) COO Derek Miller told reporters Monday, recruiting doctors has been an ongoing challenge for the agency.
'We have been careful to understand the impact of recruiting physicians from community – away from family practices for recruitment of family physicians and also the emergency room physicians,' Miller explained.
'We need to be able to sustain emergency room services at the Pasqua Hospital and the [Regina General Hospital].'
Originally, Regina's Urgent Care Centre was supposed to be open around the clock. Now the SHA says that between the centre and emergency rooms, patient demand is being met.
'We know that our peak demand throughout the day for urgent type services be it that are coming through the emergency rooms or the UCC we're covering that now,' Miller added.
The province plans to open additional urgent care centres in Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and North Battleford. The NDP Opposition questions how the government plans to staff more facilities given the situation in Regina.
'They can't even properly staff the one facility that they have open,' NDP MLA Keith Jorgenson said. 'You know, this is all smoke and mirrors.'
The SHA says it will continue to assess how the Urgent Care Centre and emergency rooms are working together in meeting patient needs.
The assessment will guide a future decision on Urgent Care Centre hours. In the meantime, physician recruitment continues.

New measles exposure site announced in Manitoba
A medical facility in Winkler, Man., was the site of the province's latest measles exposure. In a news release on Monday, the Manitoba government announced a measles exposure at the Winkler Medical Clinic on July 2 from 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Those who were at the clinic at this date and time should monitor for symptoms until July 24. Symptoms of measles usually show up seven to 21 days after exposure and initially include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability, red eyes, and small white spots on the inside of the mouth or throat. Several days of the first symptoms appear, a red blotchy rash develops on the face and moves down the body. Public health asks anyone who was at this clinic during the time of exposure to check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date on the measles vaccine. It also recommends that if you were exposed to the measles, born in 1970 or later, and have never gotten a measles vaccine or infection, then you should get immunized, watch for symptoms and try to reduce exposure to other people. Those who should not get the measles vaccine include infants under the age of six months, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. The latest provincial update shows there's been 116 confirmed cases of measles in Manitoba so far this year.

Legionnaires' death reported, outbreak declared
A Legionnaires' outbreak has been declared by the Middlesex-London Health Unit. Over the past week, one death and upwards of 43 cases have been reported to the health unit. The health unit said most of the cases live and or work in a six kilometer radius of one another in the southeast side of the city. Legionella bacteria are naturally found in water sources such as hot tubs, cooling towers, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems or parts of air-conditioning systems. If the bacteria are then aerosolized or misted into the air (from wind or fans), people may inhale the bacteria and become unwell. The health unit said most people exposed to Legionella do not become ill, though some may experience a milder illness called Pontiac Fever, which resolves itself. People who are older, have lung problems or are immunocompromised are at greater risk for serious infection. Legionella is not transmitted from person-to-person.
