EXCLUSIVE: Josh Brolin Reveals What Compelled Him to Join Zach Cregger's Weapons Movie: 'After 40 Years, I've Started to Look at Things Differently'

Pink Villa7 days ago
Josh Brolin, known for roles in No Country for Old Men and Avengers: Endgame, is stepping into new territory with Weapons, a horror-thriller from director Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian. Brolin spoke to Pinkvilla exclusively about what made him say yes to this chilling new film, calling the script both personal and powerful.
A story that grew on him
At first, Brolin wasn't sure about the project. 'I think what's happened in the trajectory of my career is after 40 years, I've started to look at things a little bit differently,' he told Pinkvilla. 'This kind of came up, and I hadn't seen Barbarian, but I read the script for Weapons and I thought the design of the script was really compelling, really interesting. And I kept going back to it.'
Brolin admitted that his initial instinct was to walk away. 'I was like, 'Nah.' Then, every time I went back to it, it got more and more interesting.'
Why working with Zach Cregger made it personal
A big turning point came when Brolin met with director Zach Cregger. 'I felt like he was an open book,' Brolin said. 'He was kind of like, 'This is me. This is who I am. This is where I'm at in my life. This is what I've gone through. This is what this script came from.'
Cregger shared that the script was inspired by the loss of a close friend, and each character represented part of his own emotional journey. 'That was the most interesting, which he alluded to in our first meeting and then expanded when we met again,' Brolin said. 'I was very moved by that. And so, that made it personal for me.'
Here's what made Weapons stand out professionally
From a career point of view, Josh Brolin was impressed by the structure of the script. 'The design of the script was exceptional, because it reminded me of early Iñárritu and Guillermo Arriaga, the kind of films that I loved,' he said. 'I like that this guy is obviously influenced by great people and is making it his own.' After finally watching Barbarian, Brolin was even more convinced. 'I really liked it,' he added.
Brolin also praised Cregger for being a grounded and emotionally connected filmmaker. 'He's a very sensitive director-because of the sensitivity, he's very present, and he wants it to stay personal to him,' Brolin said. 'And I like that kind of pressure, as opposed to a guy who's just making a movie to make a lot of money. I mean, we all want to make a lot of money, but this is personal to him.'
Weapons is a horror-thriller about a mysterious incident where all children, excluding one, vanish from the same class at exactly 2:17 a.m. The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.

‘He is 65, literally grandparents ka generation': Netizens react to Suniel Shetty's comment on marriages; expert on balancing gender roles in parenting

When actor Suniel Shetty recently shared his thoughts on marriage and parenting in an interview, his comments ignited a wave of backlash online. Speaking to Pinkvilla, he said, 'Shaadi kya chiz hai mujhe samajh mein hi nahi aata. Bachhon mein patience hai hi nahi. Shaadi kuch time ke baad ek samjhauta hota hai (I don't understand what marriage is anymore. Kids these days have no patience. Marriage is a compromise after some time), where you have to understand each other, and live for each other. Uske baad ek bacha aata hai, aur patni ko yeh jaan na zaruri hai ki husband career banayega toh bachhe ko main dekh rahi hoon (Then comes a child, and the wife needs to know that if the husband makes a career, I will take care of the kids). Husband, of course, saath mein dekhega hi. Aaj kal sab cheez mein pressure bohot ho gaya hai, kyuki gyaan dene wale bohot log hain. (The husband will, of course, look after them together, but there is a lot of pressure in everything these days, because there are a lot of people to give you unsolicited advice).' He added, 'I think experience se hum seekhe toh better hota hai (if we learn, it is better) – from the mother, from the naani, from the daadi, the sister, the in-laws. I think woh cheez bohot maine rakhta hai (That is very important, I think).' His remarks, suggesting that the wife should take primary responsibility for raising a child so that her husband can focus on his career, drew strong criticism on social media platforms. Many netizens didn't hold back. While some called his mindset outdated and 'typical of Indian uncles,' others described it as outright misogynistic. One Reddit user commented, 'Honestly, guys why are you surprised. He is not exactly speaking for our generation. He is 65, literally grandparents ka generation.' Another wrote, 'So he's a typical misogynist,' while one user remarked, 'I'm a hard-core feminist. Yeah, he's imagining a world where husband is the one working, and life can continue on a single income. But there's nothing intentionally sexist about it.' Neha Parashar, clinical psychologist, Mindtalk, tells 'This assumption stems from deeply entrenched gender roles that view caregiving as a woman's natural duty and career-building as a man's. When society reinforces this narrative, it strips both partners of the opportunity to choose roles based on personal strengths, preferences, or practical realities.' Psychologically, she mentions that it positions motherhood as an obligation rather than a choice, which can lead to 'internalised guilt or resentment in women who wish to pursue professional goals.' It also places undue pressure on men to be sole providers, potentially cutting them off from emotionally rewarding aspects of parenthood. 'The first step is to remove the idea that caregiving has a default gender. Parenting needs to be viewed as a skill set, not a role based on gender. Couples should actively discuss their expectations, values, and support systems even before the child arrives,' notes Parashar. In dual-income households, transparency and planning are key. This means dividing responsibilities not just based on availability but also taking into account each partner's emotional bandwidth, career stages, and long-term goals. Most importantly, couples must give each other permission to be vulnerable, tired, or imperfect. Co-parenting is about mutual respect and emotional presence from both sides, concludes the expert.

A video shared by Instant Bollywood on Instagram shows Samaira Kapoor stepping inside the car. She looked stunning in a black dress and had her hair tied back in a half bun hairstyle. She was seen happily interacting with someone in the car. The video went viral on social media, with fans pointing out that she has grown up to look just like her mom, Karisma. Check out the video below! Karisma Kapoor, who was married to businessman Sunjay Kapur from 2003 to 2016, shares two children with him- 20-year-old daughter Samaira, and 14-year-old son Kiaan. In 2020, when asked whether Samaira aspires to venture into Bollywood, Karisma Kapoor told Spotboye, 'That's not true. My daughter and her group of friends are interested in films through all aspects of movies, so whether it will be behind the scenes or in front of the camera I still do not know. They are just experimenting now and learning the ropes. So right now there are no such plans per se. Above all, Samaira is very young and still in school. This whole project is like an extra-curricular activity." More recently, following the untimely demise of Karisma's ex-husband Sunjay Kapur in June, speculation surrounding his estate and inheritance has dominated headlines. According to a report by Pinkvilla, insiders close to the Kapur family have confirmed that Karisma Kapoor has no involvement in any inheritance or property-related matters following Sunjay's passing. 'She is not involved in any inheritance or property-related matters in any way. The children are the rightful heirs and will receive what is due to them. Karisma's focus right now is only the well-being of her children," a source told the publication. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Salman Khan, Mahesh Narayanan In Advanced Talks For 70s-Era Action Period Thriller: Report

Last Updated: Salman Khan may soon team up with Mahesh Narayanan for a 70s-set action thriller. The duo has had multiple meetings and talks are now in the final stages. Salman Khan, who is currently gearing up for his ambitious project Galwan with director Apoorva Lakhia, is already planning his next big move. As he preps for the Ladakh shoot scheduled later this month, the superstar is actively meeting filmmakers to lock in future projects and one of the most exciting names in the mix is Malayalam director Mahesh Narayanan. According to a report in Pinkvilla, Salman and Mahesh have already had around four to five meetings, with the latest one taking place just a week ago in Mumbai. The discussions are reportedly centered around a period action thriller, a genre Salman has rarely explored in his three-decade-long career. 'Salman Khan and Mahesh Narayanan have been jamming on multiple ideas, and Salman has given a go-ahead to the filmmaker on a period-thriller with action. The film in discussion will be set in the 1970s to 1990s, and Mahesh will now come back for a full-length narration," the source told Pinkvilla. The project is said to be very different from Salman's usual fare. 'Be it Galwan, or the Mahesh Narayanan directorial—Salman is looking to explore new genres now, that challenge him. There will be a 100 percent clarity on the Mahesh Narayanan film before the end of this year," the source added. In parallel, the actor is also in touch with his frequent collaborator Kabir Khan. 'The duo is jamming on multiple ideas, and have a definite intent to collaborate. The discussions are happening across genres—from stylish action thrillers to high-octane dramas, and of course, the much-anticipated Bajrangi Bhaijaan sequel," the insider revealed. What's piquing fans' curiosity is the unique tone and setting of Mahesh's proposed film. 'It's a character in a world that Salman has not explored before. The things look positive at the moment for this collaboration," the source concluded. If things go as planned, Salman will wrap up Galwan by November or December 2025, and Mahesh Narayanan is expected to finish his Malayalam commitments in parallel. The two could come together for this exciting new project in 2026. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
