EXCLUSIVE: Josh Brolin Reveals What Compelled Him to Join Zach Cregger's Weapons Movie: 'After 40 Years, I've Started to Look at Things Differently'

Josh Brolin, known for roles in No Country for Old Men and Avengers: Endgame, is stepping into new territory with Weapons, a horror-thriller from director Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian. Brolin spoke to Pinkvilla exclusively about what made him say yes to this chilling new film, calling the script both personal and powerful. A story that grew on him At first, Brolin wasn't sure about the project. 'I think what's happened in the trajectory of my career is after 40 years, I've started to look at things a little bit differently,' he told Pinkvilla. 'This kind of came up, and I hadn't seen Barbarian, but I read the script for Weapons and I thought the design of the script was really compelling, really interesting. And I kept going back to it.' Brolin admitted that his initial instinct was to walk away. 'I was like, 'Nah.' Then, every time I went back to it, it got more and more interesting.' Why working with Zach Cregger made it personal A big turning point came when Brolin met with director Zach Cregger. 'I felt like he was an open book,' Brolin said. 'He was kind of like, 'This is me. This is who I am. This is where I'm at in my life. This is what I've gone through. This is what this script came from.' Cregger shared that the script was inspired by the loss of a close friend, and each character represented part of his own emotional journey. 'That was the most interesting, which he alluded to in our first meeting and then expanded when we met again,' Brolin said. 'I was very moved by that. And so, that made it personal for me.' Here's what made Weapons stand out professionally From a career point of view, Josh Brolin was impressed by the structure of the script. 'The design of the script was exceptional, because it reminded me of early Iñárritu and Guillermo Arriaga, the kind of films that I loved,' he said. 'I like that this guy is obviously influenced by great people and is making it his own.' After finally watching Barbarian, Brolin was even more convinced. 'I really liked it,' he added. Brolin also praised Cregger for being a grounded and emotionally connected filmmaker. 'He's a very sensitive director-because of the sensitivity, he's very present, and he wants it to stay personal to him,' Brolin said. 'And I like that kind of pressure, as opposed to a guy who's just making a movie to make a lot of money. I mean, we all want to make a lot of money, but this is personal to him.' Weapons is a horror-thriller about a mysterious incident where all children, excluding one, vanish from the same class at exactly 2:17 a.m. The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.

James Brolin says he initially replaced Roger Moore in 'James Bond' film 'Octopussy'

Los Angeles, Hollywood actor James Brolin says he almost got the role of James Bond in the 1983 spy film "Octopussy" but lost the opportunity. James Brolin says he initially replaced Roger Moore in 'James Bond' film 'Octopussy' Known for projects such as "The Amityville Horror", "Westworld", and "Capricorn One", Brolin said he was offered the role in the film after Roger Moore, who eventually landed it, exited the project. During that time, Moore said he won't do any other film playing the popular 007 agent, which led to his departure from it. Following the makers approached Brolin for the role. "He was out, so I flew over and I met all the people. And I got my apartment and I started working with the stuntmen and Cubby Broccoli hired me," Brolin told entertainment news magazine People in an interview. Directed by John Glen, "Octopussy" also featured Kristina Wayborn and Maud Adams alongside Moore. Brolin,84, said he later got a call stating that Moore returned to the project. "We hadn't signed any papers yet. I got back to L A to get my stuff because I was going to be gone for a year. And I got a call saying Roger decided to do one more, and I was out," he said. In the beginning, the actor was still on the path, figuring out what would suit him, and shared getting an offer to be a part of the "Superman" film back then. "'Amityville' was the biggest-grossing independent film of all time, and nobody knew what to do with me, because of the character...I got offered 'Superman' and turned it down because I couldn't see myself being hung up on wires in a big red sock. It just wasn't the direction I wanted to go," he said. Brolin, who is also a director and has projects such as "Royal Hearts", "Royal Reunion" and his debut "My Brother's War" to his credit, said he doesn't have any preferences when it comes to playing different roles. "I don't have any preferences. They're varied. It's hard to say I like a certain kind of thing," he said. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Hollywood star, 84, reveals he nearly replaced iconic actor as James Bond

James Brolin has revealed that he very nearly played James Bond, only to lose out at the last moment when Roger Moore had a change of heart. The actor, 85, reflected on the early 1980s, when he was tapped to take over the iconic role of 007. At the time, Roger Moore had indicated that he was finished with the Bond franchise, and producers began seriously considering replacements. Among those brought in was Brolin, who by then had earned acclaim for roles in Marcus Welby, M.D. and The Amityville Horror. In a recent interview with People magazine, Brolin revealed he flew to London, met with producer Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli, began training with stuntmen, and even secured an apartment in anticipation of shooting Octopussy. 'He was out, so I flew over and I met all the people,' Brolin recalled to the publication. 'And I got my apartment and I started working with the stuntmen and Cubby Broccoli hired me.' He continued: 'We hadn't signed any papers yet. I got back to L.A. to get my stuff because I was going to be gone for a year. And I got a call saying Roger decided to do one more, and I was out.' Moore ultimately returned for Octopussy, released in 1983, and again for A View to a Kill in 1985. Brolin, meanwhile, continued a steady and diverse acting career, eventually earning an Emmy and Golden Globe for his television work and becoming a respected character actor. He also turned down the role of Superman, citing a lack of interest in playing idealised leading men. 'To be a leading man and just looking your best and saying the words perfect, it's not interesting at all to me,' he told People. Brolin's revelation comes as fans continue to speculate over who will play 007 in a new Bond film that's expected by the end of 2027. Daniel Craig stepped down in 2021, leaving the role open for a newcomer. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has long been heavily rumoured to be the next James Bond, from as far back as 2022 – although reports of his official casting were denied in March 2024. Former favourite Idris Elba, 52, previously ruled himself out from playing the British spy, while other hotly tipped actors, including James Norton and Theo James, have remained coy. Recently, Amazon MGM Studios has announced that Denis Villeneuve will helm the next James Bond film, increasing anticipation. The Canadian director, best known for directing Dune and Dune: Part Two, as well as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, and Prisoners, expressed reverence for the character. 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007,' he said in a statement released Wednesday. More Trending He called the opportunity 'a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.' The announcement comes during a period of major upheaval behind the scenes of the Bond universe. Amazon Studios officially purchased MGM for $8.45billion (£6.7billion) in 2022, with a new agreement over creative control meaning Bond — and whoever is next to play 007 – is entirely under the streamer's control.
