Drug use at city pubs reduced to due to close monitoring, consistent actions: Police Commissioner

The Hindu3 days ago
Asserting that the investigation into the network of narcotic drug cartels would intensify further and more peddlers would come into the net, the Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A.Arun on Saturday said pubs, hotels and private places are under the radar of the police and frequent checks were being conducted to curb the drug menace.
Addressing reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Arun said, 'It is said many are using narcotic drugs in pubs. After starting the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU), we are closely monitoring them. Now the use of drugs in pubs has substantially reduced due to our consistent efforts. There are reports that people have been using the contraband in private places like in hotel rooms. We are also conducting surprise checks and seizing them.'
He said the ANIU has detected 54 networks of drug cartels and arrested over 534 peddlers for peddling synthetic drugs including 26 foreign nationals. Additional Commissioner of Police, South, N.Kannan added that kingpins of drug cartels were arrested from major cities across India such Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Bengaluru.
Beginning from the arrest of eight persons for drunken brawl at a Nungambakkam bar last month, police analysed backward and forward links and nabbed 27 persons who were connected to a cocaine cartel in 10 cases booked. At least six of them were detained under the Goondas Act. 'We are continuously analysing backward and forward links of drug offenders. We cannot arrest someone just because he gave a statement. We need corroborative evidence. We are duly following the line. It will continue,' said Mr. Arun.
Replying to the criticism on the police handling of misappropriation case relating to Naveen Bollini, a treasury manager of a private dairy firm, the Commissioner asserted that it was a case of suicide and scientific evidence, and forensic experts have established it.
The Commissioner said a complaint of the company at a public grievance redressal camp on June 25 was forwarded to Central Crime Branch (CCB) with his endorsement. After the CCB seized it, it asked the complainant firm to provide more documents such as bank transactions to ascertain genuineness and the CCB did not call Naveen for enquiry yet.
Mr. Arun said normally as per norms, the local police should enquire a complaint of above Rs one crore. Since the complaint had mentioned the amount of misappropriation was Rs 40 crore and lodged with Central Crime Branch (CCB), then local police/ Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kolathur ought not to have inquired into the complaint. The DC exceeded his brief and it was wrong departmentally. Joint Commissioner of Police, West, Disha Mittal has been conducting a departmental inquiry with DCP.
However, there is no evidence that DCP has summoned Naveen and interrogated him by phone or in person. If there is any charge of abetment of the suicide, it will be duly investigated, the Commissioner said.

Ahmedabad youth kidnapped in bid to steal cryptocurrency worth Rs 43 lakh; cops rescue him, detain 3

The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City police Tuesday detained three men who allegedly kidnapped a youth in a bid to steal cryptocurrency worth around Rs 43 lakh from his digital wallet. Officers said the men were held following a chase over several hours in the morning. A statement from the DCB identified the victim as Prince Pandey, the son of a retired Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Army. Ajit Rajian, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime, said Prince was severely assaulted and was admitted to a hospital for treatment. The police said that at around 2 am on July 15, the accused called Prince from his friend's mobile phone and asked him to meet them near Bapunagar toll naka. There, they put him in the back of a car without registration plates and with black film on its windows, and drove away, officers said. The abductors then allegedly asked Pandey to pay them 50,000 USDT (Tether), a cryptocurrency, which is worth Rs 42.90 lakh in Indian rupees. The police statement said that since Prince did not give them the password to his digital wallet, they continuously assaulted him in the moving vehicle while driving it across the city. When his father Pankajkumar Pandey learned about the abduction, he immediately informed the police. The night team of the Crime Branch was soon alerted, officers said. With the aid of CCTV footage, human intelligence and technical analysis, the investigators managed to locate the vehicle and rescue Prince. Action is underway against the accused, they added.

In 11 months, Central Railway resolves over 11,000 complaints, recovers Rs 4 crore in fines from AC coaches

The Mumbai Division of Central Railway has resolved 100 per cent of commuter complaints and recovered Rs 4.01 crore in fines from ticketless passengers travelling in AC coaches of local trains. According to officials, all 11,134 complaints received between May 2024 and June 2025 were resolved within two days — either on the spot or during follow-up checks. The AC Class Task Force, operational since May 25, 2024, was formed to curb irregular travel and respond swiftly to complaints via a 24×7 WhatsApp helpline (7208819987). During the 13-month period for which data is available, while the number of offenders caught stood at 1.22 lakh, the fines collected amounted to Rs 4.01 crore. While there are no comparable figures for the corresponding period in the previous year, as the task force was not operational before May 2024, the statement issued by the Central Railway does include a year-on-year comparison of complaint trends, showing a sharp decline in misuse. In June 2024, CR received an average of 79 complaints per day, with a peak of 228 on the busiest day. By June 2025, the average fell to 29 per day, with a peak of 103, indicating a substantial improvement in travel discipline. A CR official said the goal is now 'zero complaints' in AC coaches, which serve nearly 78,000 passengers daily through 80 AC local services. The suburban network runs 1,810 services overall, transporting over 3.9 million passengers each day. Passengers are encouraged to report irregularities via WhatsApp text. CR has also reiterated that the number is for messaging only and does not support voice calls. (The author, Naresh, is an intern with The Indian Express)
