More than two decades after a mother-son duo sold an airstrip, its ownership was restored to the Indian Air Force (IAF) last month. Read to know how they sold an airstrip used in three India-Pakistan wars. read more A mother and her son have been charged with fraudulently selling an airstrip of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Punjab. After a whistleblower approached the court, the government initiated an investigation and charged Usha Ansal and her son Naveen Chand of Dumni Wala village in Punjab's Ferozepur of fraudulently selling the IAF's airstrip in 1997, according to The Times of India. The airstrip is located in Fattuwala village near the India-Pakistan border and was commissioned in the World War II. The IAF used it as an advanced landing ground in wars with Pakistan in 1947-48, '65, and '71. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The matter came to light when a whistleblower, Nishan Singh, raised the matter with the Punjab and Haryana High Court. After the HC took up the case, the airstrip was handed over to the IAF last month and Usha and Naveen were booked for cheating by personification, dishonestly inducing delivery of property, forgery, and criminal conspiracy, according to the ToI. How mother-son duo sold the airstrip The case dates to 1997 and corrective actions were only taken last month. In 1997, Usha and Naveen joined hands with revenue officials to claim ownership of the land by forging government documents, according to ToI. After claiming ownership of the land, they sold the land with the airstrip in collusion with revenue officials with the help of forged documents. These details came to light in the Punjab Vigilance Bureau investigation that was ordered into the matter by the Punjab and Haryana HC based on the Singh's complaint. The ownership of the land was restored to the IAF last month. Currently, Deputy Superintendent of Police Karan Sharma is investigating the case against the mother-son duo. Until the matter reached the High Court, the inaction of government officials was such that the deputy commissioner did nothing even when the Halwara Air Force Station Commandant complained about the airstrip and sought a probe, as per the newspaper.

Gurgaon: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered an FIR against two officials of the labour department in the city under the Prevention of Corruption Act after being accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000 and accepting Rs 3,500 in cash for approving a business registration application. According to ACB, A Quarian Education Abroad — a private company — applied five times through the official labour department portal for registration of a commercial establishment. Each application was allegedly rejected by labour inspector Manoj Kumar without valid justification. Oppn alleges admn incompetence, undue favour to BJP workers; BJP counters
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Leader of opposition and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Sunday termed the stampede in Puri as a glaring incompetence by the govt in crowd management, while Congress attributed it to undue favour shown to BJP workers to gather around chariots. "Today's stampede, occurring just a day after the abysmal failure of crowd management during the Rath Yatra that left hundreds injured, exposes the govt's glaring incompetence in ensuring a peaceful festival for devotees," Naveen wrote on X. Quoting eyewitness reports, he added that the initial response to the tragedy came from the devotees' relatives, with no govt machinery present to manage the surging crowds, highlighting a shocking lapse in duty. "The inordinate delay in pulling the Nandighosha chariot on Rath Yatra day was conveniently attributed to 'Mahaprabhu's Wish', a shocking excuse that masks the administration's complete abdication of responsibility. While I refrain from accusing the govt of criminal negligence, their blatant callousness undeniably contributed to this tragedy. I urge the govt to implement urgent corrective measures to ensure the smooth conduct of Adapa Bije, Bahuda, Suna Besha and other key #RathYatra rituals," Naveen wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo He said, "I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the three devotees who lost their lives in the tragic stampede at Saradhabali, #Puri, and I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannatha for the swift recovery of the devotees injured in this devastating incident." Echoing him, state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das said the entire arrangement for the festival, including security, was VVIP- and BJP worker-centric. "It should have been devotee-centric, but it was not so. Thousands of BJP workers from all over the country made unauthorised entry close to the chariot perimeter, swelling the crowd and pushing other devotees to the brink. Uncountable delegates made their way into the VVIP dais as well. It is highly condemnable," Das said. BJP countered the opposition allegations and said that strong action was taken against the negligent officers and more action is awaited as an inquiry is underway. "The incident is being thoroughly probed. All lapses will be identified and negligence will not be viewed lightly," law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan told the media.
