Kochi corporation struggles to control stray dog population as ABC project faces setbacks

Time of Indiaa day ago

Kochi: Even while stray dog menace continues, Kochi corporation's efforts to augment operations of animal birth control (ABC) project at Brahmapuram failed. Local body authorities decided to vaccinate around 10,000 stray dogs in Aug 2025.
A
t the same time, efforts to deploy more dog catchers and procure a vehicle for movement of dogs caught from various parts of the city to ABC centre at Brahmapuram have not yielded results so far. "Sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs are being done at a slow pace. There are only five workers to catch stray dogs from 74 divisions of corporation," corporation UDF parliamentary party secretary said M G Aristotle.
According to ABC centre officials, despite making continued efforts to appoint more dog catchers, none are joining. "It is a very difficult and dangerous job," said an official.
Corporation authorities have completed renovation of the centre. Sterilisation of 8,400 stray dogs has been completed at the centre so far.
Opposition councillors said the excuse of not finding staff to catch dogs is unreasonable. Despite funds being allocated to build a shelter for 100 dogs, it has not been completed to date, councillors said. This points to the apathetic attitude of corporation authorities, they said.

'If he does get in..': Donald Trump warns Zohran Mamdani, says he didn't know who he is

Donald Trump threatens that if Mamdani becomes NYC mayor and doesn't do the right thing, NYC will get no money. President Donald Trump reiterated his shock at Socialist Zohran Mamdani winning the Democratic primary for the NYC mayoral election, as he had earlier, but this time it came with a threat of not giving any money to NYC. Speaking on Fox Sunday morning, Trump said Mamdani is a communist and he openly admits it. "He's a communist and I think it's very bad for New York. I don't know if he's going to get in but he's a pure communist and I think he admits it," he said. "I can't imagine it, but let's say this: If he does get it, I am going to be president, and he's going to have to do the right thing. Or they are not getting any money," Trump said. — RapidResponse47 (@RapidResponse47) "I used to say that we would never have a Socialist in this country but we have a communist. I was very surprised. I never heard of him. I don't know who he is," Trump said adding that Mamdani is a left, liberal, lunatic. After Mamdani's apparent victory, after Andrew Cuomo conceded the election, Trump made his first comment about Mamdani on his Truth Social, where he said Democrats have crossed the line in choosing Mamdani. "Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. he looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart, he's got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!" Trump posted. Mamdani reacted to Trump's criticism and said: 'You know, this is not the first time that President Trump is going to comment on myself, and I encourage him — just like I encourage every New Yorker — to learn about my actual policies to make the city affordable." 'If he continues to focus on persecuting political enemies and on trying to detain and disappear New Yorkers, be it on the basis of their documentation or their sexual orientation or their politics, that is someone that I will fight time and again,' Mamdani told ABC.
