ECI invites Motha in Del for talks on illegal migration, says Pradyot

Agartala: Tripura's ruling BJP ally Tipra Motha delegation has been invited at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss their demand for extensive revision of electoral roll to identify illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar with the
Election Commission of India
(ECI), Motha founder and Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman said.
Pradyot termed the development as a 'huge victory', and said ECI's invitation validates the concerns repeatedly raised by Tipra Motha over the demographic change and security implications of unchecked cross-border migration.
In recent years, infiltration from Bangladesh and Myanmar has emerged as the biggest threat to Tripura. The settlers of both tribal and non-tribal since the accession of Tripura to Indian union in Oct 1949 are the indigenous in the state, and thereafter, before creation of Bangladesh in 1971 were also considered as the legal settlers of the state.
Whoever crosses over to Tripura after March 1971, according to Indian law, they are illegal immigrants, and they had managed to stay in the state, thereby creating a problem for the genuine citizens.
However, soon after the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, India govt had issued order to all the states and territorial govt to flush out illegal immigrants, but it didn't work in Tripura. Thereafter, in 2017 and 2021 similar orders were issued, but the then Left Front and BJP govt, respectively neither made it public nor executed the orders.
On May 19 this year, the ministry of home affairs issued directives to all the state govts following Pahalgam incident to identify illegal migrants and deport them to their respective countries. Accordingly, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Haryana have started implementing the order.
Tripura has also formed a special task force to deal with illegal migrants and prevent infiltration.
To identify the illegal migrants and their deportation, Tipra Motha, has launched a sustain campaign at community level and demanded ECI to go for extensive revision of electoral roll like Bihar.
"We are trying to protect our next generation and looking beyond party politics. This is not just a fight of TIPRA Motha party but every Indian," Pradyot said, adding that he also made a passionate appeal to rise above party politics and stand united against illegal migration, emphasising the need for a collective and nationalistic approach to the issue rather than treating it as a political agenda.

State BJP president Manmohan Samal had recently hinted at such a possibility. "The chief minister may drop a couple of ministers and introduce new faces to give his govt a fresh look as he enters his second year in office," a senior party leader said on condition of anonymity. On possible cabinet expansion, law minister Harichandan said, "That's a prerogative of the chief minister. As our party state president has already said, discussions are on for filling up the vacancies besides appointment of various boards and corporations." Regarding the governor's visit, the law minister said Kambhampati came as a well-wisher of the family and as a friend. "He gave his feedback regarding the functioning of some departments. He also gave his advice on how the govt should function as per PM Narendra Modi's vision," the minister said, adding the discussions were more personal.

The govt has not commented on the last week's talks in Washington, but by all indications, negotiators have failed to make much headway on the contentious issue of allowing American agriculture and dairy products, which have been clearly marked as no-go areas by India. Besides, India has been demanding that it should get a good deal in areas of interests such as textiles, footwear, certain auto parts and shrimps and is unwilling to settle for sub-optimal solutions. The US has been insisting on concessions for agricultural products such as maize and soybean, most of which is genetically modified, something that India does not allow. In recent days, Trump has claimed that a deal with India will be finalised soon. Although it is unclear if talks for a deal before Aug 1 deadline will take place virtually, it remains to be seen how the American president responds, given that he has been sending tariff letters to countries which have not signed agreements so far. In fact, the transparency in the deals being signed by Trump is another concern with govt, given that the US has finalised deals with Vietnam and Bangladesh, where the non-disclosure clauses are preventing them from being made public while the American president claims victory. On April 2, Trump had announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian products, only to suspend it till July 9 and announced Aug 1 as the new date for the higher levies to kick in. India, Pak continue shadow boxing with Notams along borders for air exercises
File photo NEW DELHI: The shadow boxing between India and Pakistan continues after cessation of the May 7-10 cross-border hostilities, with both countries issuing Notams (notice to airmen) to reserve their respective airspaces along the borders for exercises. The South Western Air Command of the IAF is slated to undertake an air combat exercise in the Rajasthan-Gujarat region close to the international border from July 23 to July 25. Pakistan, in turn, has issued a Notam for its central region till July 23 and southern part on July 22-23. Both nations had conducted multiple air force & naval drills in the run-up to the four-day intense hostilities that began after India launched deep precision strikes against four terror hubs in Pakistan and five in POK on May 7 under Operation Sindoor . Though India made it clear that the aim was to hit only terror infrastructure, Pakistan chose to escalate the situation by launching waves of drones and missiles to target Indian airbases, military assets and civilian areas. IAF had then struck at least nine Pakistani airbases & three radar sites, a few of them close to nuclear facilities as well as command & control structures, with Su-30MKI, Rafale & Mirage-2000 fighters using BrahMos, Crystal Maze-2, Rampage and Scalp missiles, among other precision munitions, for calibrated pinpoint strikes, as was reported by TOI.
