KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- The meeting of the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) will be held today, in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings.
The SEANWFZ meeting is expected to revisit ASEAN's long-standing efforts to preserve the region as a nuclear weapon-free zone, as outlined in the 1995 SEANWFZ Treaty.
While all 10 ASEAN member states have ratified the treaty, efforts to secure the signatures of the five recognised nuclear-weapon states – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – to the treaty's protocol remain ongoing.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had previously stated that China and Russia have agreed to sign the protocol, while the United States is still reviewing the treaty.
Also taking place today are the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) and the Drafting Committee of the ASEAN SOM, which will prepare the groundwork for ministerial-level discussions, including negotiating and finalising the Joint Communique which will be the key outcome document of the 58th AMM.
The communique is expected to outline ASEAN's collective positions on regional integration, community-building and various regional and global issues.
The 58th AMM and related meetings, to be held under Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings, including engagements with ASEAN Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners.
The high-level meetings, to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11, will gather about 1,500 delegates.

47th ASEAN Summit in KL to be largest gathering with global leaders

RIO DE JANEIRO: The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur this October is poised to be the largest in the bloc's history, with multiple global leaders confirming attendance. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed the expanded participation during his official visits to Italy, France, and Brazil. Key attendees include Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Anwar noted the summit's broader engagement beyond ASEAN's traditional partners, calling it a 'major undertaking' that reflects growing international interest in the region. The event, scheduled for October 26–28, will build on last year's 46th ASEAN Summit, which included the ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-GCC-China meetings. ASEAN's 10 member states—Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines—will be joined by dialogue partners like the US, China, Japan, and the EU. Lula da Silva, speaking at the BRICS Business Forum, urged Brazilian businesses to leverage the summit as a critical trade platform. Anwar expressed confidence in Malaysia's readiness to host the high-profile gathering, stating, 'God willing, we will be able to shoulder it together.'

This is one percentage point higher compared to what had been announced in April. In a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim posted on Truth Social account on Monday, US President Donald Trump said "the 25 per cent number is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity we have with your country". Trump also said that if Malaysia decided to raise tariffs, the number that the country imposed will be added onto the 25 per cent that US is charging. Malaysia has been negotiating the US tariff with Washington since April, with the aim to lessen the 24 per cent tariff imposed earlier, with the latest talks held on June 18 this year. This announcement came ahead of the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's first trip to Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN-US post ministerial conference and other meetings of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting and related meetings starting today. - BERNAMA More Like This

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 8 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Monday that his official visits to Italy, France and Brazil have successfully met their intended objectives. Besides reinforcing bilateral ties, he said the visits also contributed to efforts to attract investments and boost Malaysia's trade relations. Speaking at a press conference at the conclusion of the three-nation visit which began in Italy on July 1, he said it also raised Malaysia's visibility in its capacity as ASEAN Chair for 2025. He underscored that the mission opened up wider networks for Malaysian companies to expand internationally.
