'Kennedy must fall': CIA releases Sirhan Sirhan diary pages and RFK assassination files

The National13-06-2025
Previously classified documents related to the 1968 murder of presidential hopeful Robert F Kennedy and his Palestinian Christian assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, have been released by the CIA.
One of the files details an emergency meeting of the Palestine Arab Delegation in the Arab League offices of New York's Chrysler building following the killing of Mr Kennedy.
Sirhan, a Palestinian who emigrated from Jordan to the US, shot and killed Mr Kennedy on June 6, 1968, after he won the California Democratic presidential primary.
Several investigations by the Los Angeles police and FBI indicated speeches given by Mr Kennedy on the campaign trail in support of Israel prompted Sirhan's motivation.
'Kennedy must fall … Kennedy must fall' reads one of the diary entries written by Sirhan, released in the latest document dump.
Another document, an intelligence report circulated in the CIA, shows that the Palestinian Arab Delegation was closely monitored by the intelligence agency after Sirhan was taken into custody.
At an emergency meeting of the group held during the assassin's trial, Issa Nakhleh, a former senior adviser to the UN Palestinian Delegation, described Sirhan as an 'Arab guerrilla' whose murder of Mr Kennedy was 'motivated by political events'.
'Nakhleh informed the group that one of his aims in briefing the group was to enlist their support for a trip to the Middle East which he planned to make in order to collect funds to aid Sirhan's defence,' reads the document.
The source for those particular meeting notes appears to be an informant, described by the CIA as a 'Middle East national with a leftist political orientation who has good contacts at the UN'.
It also alleges that Mr Nakhleh had in the past been accused of being a 'loose handler' of funds – that he had previously raised money for various causes, but that the funds later 'found a way into his pockets'.
Another released document shows that both the CIA and FBI were particularly concerned with how the Soviet Union was portraying Sirhan.
'Soviet media have displayed predictable sensitivity to the fact that the suspect is an Arab immigrant,' reads one of the reports, which also examined how a Soviet journalist's opinion piece critiqued the US reaction to Sirhan.
'Izvestiya Kondrashov accused the US press of 'playing on the Arab origin of the assassin' and on evidence of his 'anti-Israeli attitudes' in order to shift the blame from the American way of life, 'the real guilty party in the tragedy.''
A report compiled before the assassination, titled 'The Arab Nationalists Movement', was also circulated in the CIA shortly after Mr Kennedy was killed, while investigators were trying to learn about Sirhan's motives.
'In Jordan recently, a new Arab Nationalists Movement commando group has been organised to carry out raids within Israel,' the report reads.
In April of 1969, a jury found Sirhan guilty of assassinating Mr Kennedy.
Despite a preponderance of evidence, conspiracy theories have thrived for decades, with some suggesting Sirhan's innocence.
In a previous interview with The National, author Mel Ayton, widely considered to be one of the foremost experts on Sirhan and the assassination, said that all of those theories fall apart under even the most basic examination.
Any documents that remain classified, he explained, are classified for security reasons.
'It wasn't about covering anything up, it was about protecting sources, police sources and potential informants – that's what it all comes down to,' he said.
Sirhan's many attempts to be paroled have so far been unsuccessful. He was briefly granted parole by the California parole board in 2021, only to have the decision vetoed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who said the assassination was one of the most notorious crimes in US history.
For the 17th time since being incarcerated in 1969, Sirhan was again denied a parole request in 2023. He will be eligible again in 2027.
The prisoner, 81, has periodically made contradictory comments about his role in the assassination. During some interviews, he claims not to remember the events, while in others, he seems to express remorse.

US House poised to send stablecoin bill to Trump after 'crypto week' drama

The U.S. House of Representatives appeared poised to pass key crypto legislation on Thursday, including the creation of a regulatory framework for U.S.-dollar-pegged cryptocurrency tokens known as stablecoins, after two days of fraught negotiations. House lawmakers in Washington were due to convene on Thursday afternoon to consider passing the stablecoin bill and another that would develop a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies more broadly. The stablecoin measure, which has already been agreed to in the Senate, is expected to pass and move on to be signed by President Donald Trump as soon as Friday. That would be a major victory for the digital assets industry, marking the first major crypto law enacted in the United States and paving the way for greater integration of crypto into traditional financial markets. Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, usually a 1:1 dollar peg, are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds. They have gained much momentum in recent years, offering faster and cheaper transaction costs than moving money through a bank. Their use has grown rapidly in recent years, and proponents say they could be used to send payments instantly. The week's negotiations to consider the legislation - dubbed "crypto week" by Republican lawmakers - ran into unexpected hurdles after some conservative hold-outs voted against considering the measures. Trump huddled with skeptics at the White House on Tuesday to try to save the initiative. Even after Trump announced an agreement, it still took about nine hours for the bills to clear key procedural hurdles late on Wednesday as private talks continued. In negotiations that went late into Wednesday evening, lawmakers decided to include language to prohibit the United States from issuing a central bank digital currency in an unrelated defense spending bill as a compromise to conservatives who strongly supported the ban. The anti-central bank currency bill had become a sticking point for conservative Republicans. While central banks in some nations have explored issuing their own digital currencies, the topic has been met with quick resistance in the United States from conservative Republicans, who argue it could allow the government to monitor Americans' spending. The Fed has studied the issue, but Chairman Jerome Powell has said that the central bank would never pursue one absent explicit approval from Congress. House lawmakers have said they are aiming to vote on all three crypto measures later in the day. When asked if he expects the crypto bills to pass on Thursday, House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters: "I do." Trump says Coca-Cola to switch to cane sugar in US

Beverage giant Coca-Cola has agreed to use real cane sugar in its US production, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday on social media. The company currently uses high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in its domestic beverages — a sweetener that has long drawn criticism from Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. and his Make America Healthy Again movement. "I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You'll see. It's just better!" The US president did not explain what motivated his push for the change, which would not impact his well-known favorite beverage, Diet Coke. Since his return to the White House, Trump has re-installed a special button in the Oval Office which summons a helping of the sugar-free carbonated drink. Coca-Cola did not immediately confirm the ingredient shift. "We appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm for our iconic Coca‑Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca‑Cola product range will be shared soon," the company said in a short statement. HFCS became popular in the 1970s, with its use skyrocketing thanks to government subsidies for corn growers and high import tariffs on cane sugar. Any shift away from corn is likely to draw backlash in the Corn Belt, a Midwestern region that has been a stronghold of support for Trump. Both HFCS and sucrose (cane sugar) are composed of fructose and glucose. However, they differ structurally: HFCS contains free (unbonded) fructose and glucose in varying ratios -- 55/45 in soft drinks -- while sucrose consists of the two sugars chemically bonded together. These structural differences, however, don't appear to significantly affect health outcomes. A 2022 review of clinical studies found no meaningful differences between HFCS and sucrose in terms of weight gain or heart health. The only notable distinction was an increase in a marker of inflammation in people consuming HFCS. Overall, both sweeteners appear similarly impactful when consumed at equal calorie levels. Despite this, Mexican Coke — which is made with cane sugar — is often sold at a premium in US stores and prized for its more "natural" flavour. Trump's prized Diet Coke is sweetened with aspartame — a compound classified as a "possible carcinogen" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Trump's World Liberty crypto tokens are set to become tradable

Tokenholders of US President Donald Trump-backed crypto project World Liberty Financial (WLFI) have voted to make them tradable, opening the door for the Trump-linked token to increase in value. The proposal submitted by the WLFI team on July 9 closed on Wednesday, with an 'overwhelming' 99.94% in favor of the unlock. It will make the platform's governance token tradable through peer-to-peer transactions and secondary markets. 'Following the vote to make the token tradable, WLFI's governance framework will enable more tokenholders to participate directly in protocol decisions,' the WLFI team said in the proposal. 'This includes voting on emissions, ecosystem incentives, and future treasury actions. This proposal is the first step in handing greater influence to the community.' Token unlock will come in stages, launch plan coming soon Not all the governance tokens will be unlocked at once, according to the WLFI team, and a full launch plan is coming soon, according to WLFI's post on X on Wednesday. The WLFI team outlined in the original proposal that as part of the initial unlock, only 'a portion' of the tokens sold to early supporters will be eligible to be traded. 'The remainder of the tokens will be subject to a second vote by the community to determine the unlock and release schedule,' the team said. Founders, team, and adviser tokens will also not be unlocked. They will be subject to a longer schedule: timing and any eligibility requirements are yet to be determined. World Liberty sold WLFI tokens in two tranches. One opened in October 2024 and sold 20 billion for $0.015 each, netting the company about $300 million. The second opened in January and charged $0.05 per token, which saw another five billion tokens sold, generating $250 million in sales. Transition from closed to open The token unlock is part of a broader plan to transition from being a closed network to 'open participation,' the WLFI team said. Making the tokens tradable will also likely open the door to speculation and price discovery. Once the tokens become tradable, the team said it will continue ecosystem expansion and align long-term token incentives with protocol adoption. Blockchain intelligence platform TRM Labs has been tapped to provide transaction monitoring. Trump family reducing WLFI stake WLFI launched on Sept. 16, 2024 and was endorsed by Donald Trump and his sons — Eric, Donald Jr. and Barron Trump. The president reported a $57 million profit from WLFI in a June financial disclosure with the US Office of Government Ethics; however, the Trump family has also reportedly reduced its stake in the platform since December 2024, holding 40% of the company as of June.
