Revealed: The surprising result of Marty Sheargold's axing by Triple M following his disgraceful outburst about the Matildas

Daily Mail01-05-2025
Two months after sacking Marty Sheargold following his shocking outburst about the Matildas, Triple M is dominating the Brisbane radio airwaves.
Owned by SCA Radio, Triple M finished number one overall in the latest survey - and in further good news, the new Triple M Rush Hour Queensland show, hosted by Ben 'Dobbo' Dobbin and Elliott Lovejoy is said to be already resonating with its audience.
'Triple M's return to Number 1 in Brisbane is a standout achievement and testament to the brand's enduring local power,' SCA's chief content officer Dave Cameron said.
Nova FM breakfast trio Ash Bradnam, David 'Luttsy' Lutteral and comedian Nikki Osborne also impressed in Brisbane, snaring 13.6 per cent to claim honours in the highly competitive breakfast slot ahead of Triple M (13.2 per cent).
In late February, Triple M axed host Sheargold after he was blasted for comments about the Matildas that were branded un-Australian, sexist and disgusting.
The actor and comedian, 53, made the remarks on his radio show as he reacted to the team's 2-1 loss to the USA at the SheBelieves Cup, which came on the heels of their 4-0 loss to Japan to open the tournament.
Sheargold told listeners 'there's something wrong with the Matildas' before comparing the team to 'Year 10 girls' and asking if superstar striker Sam Kerr and her fiancée Kristie Mewis 'play the same position.'
When his co-hosts tried to continue discussing the SheBelieves Cup, Sheargold jumped in, exclaiming: 'Oh, she believes in what? It better be men.'
Following intense public backlash, Triple M released a statement, stating they had 'mutually agreed to part ways' with the radio star.
SCA's chief content officer Dave Cameron said at the time: 'Triple M and Marty Sheargold have mutually agreed to part ways.
'Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) takes its responsibility to listeners, shareholders, and clients seriously and its programming should align with the standards and expectations of its audience.
'Right now, it's clear this is a moment for reflection and review. Triple M, and the wider SCA network, will continue to take all necessary steps to support staff.
'A new Drive show will be announced in due course. Triple M acknowledges Marty's contribution over the past four years, and we wish him well for the future.'
Sheargold also released a statement on his exit from the radio network, adding an apology to the Matildas for his 'sexist' remarks.
NRL great Nathan Hindmarsh (pictured, right) is one of the replacements for Marty Sheargold on Triple M
'Having mutually agreed to part ways with the Triple M Network, I fully understand the gravity of my comments,' he said.
'I'd like to sincerely apologise to the Matildas and the broader organisation.'
Following Sheargold's ignorant remarks about Kerr and her fiancée Mewis, the conversation then moved to Australia hosting the women's Asian Cup next year.
'Oh god. The Asian Cup,' Sheargold said.
'I'd rather hammer a nail through the head of my penis than watch that. Got any men's sport?'
His outburst was described as 'outrageous' by interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni, who was part of a chorus of criticism.
Sheargold was also condemned by Federal Sports Minister Anika Wells, Matildas midfielder Clare Wheeler, Football Australia and the players' union, Professional Footballers Australia.
Last month, Triple M confirmed footy great Nathan Hindmarsh will help replace Sheargold after his now infamous Matildas' comments.
In Sydney, the Rush Hour show - which started on April 28 - is hosted by NRL legend Hindmarsh, along with broadcaster Anthony Maroon and sports reporter Adam Peacock.

Mary Fowler squashes rumours she's broken up with Nathan Cleary as she beams in photos their fans have been dying to see

Soccer and NRL fans who were worried that Mary Fowler 's romance with Nathan Cleary had fizzled out have had their concerns put to rest as the Matildas star smiled from ear to ear while stepping out with her man in Sydney on Sunday. Out-of-character moves by the couple on social media recently led to speculation by Daily Mail Australia that there could have been trouble brewing for the couple, who first went public with their romance in November 2023. Now photos of the pair leaving Penrith Panthers' headquarters in western Sydney appear to have proven us wrong - and we couldn't be happier. Fowler was smiling and laughing as she and Cleary left the club's training facilities on Sunday after she was seen cheering him on from the stands as the defending premiers ran out big winners over Wests Tigers on Saturday night. She also visited him at his home in Sydney's west last week, looking tense as she left. The couple also appear to have had a date night at a tenpin bowling alley, where they were photographed posing with a Panthers fan in a heartwarming snap. Recent out-of-character moves by both stars on social media had fuelled speculation about their romance - but they now appear to have put that to rest Now the most recent photos show Mary dressed casually in training gear and carrying a water bottle as Nathan beamed alongside her as he recovered from starring in Penrith's 36-2 win. A series of eye-opening changes by the couple on social media first gave rise to speculation about their relationship earlier this month. When Fowler flew into Sydney on July 16, Cleary - who's usually with her when she arrives and departs at the airport - was nowhere to be seen. More signs were there for all to see on social media. Cleary has long had a pair of paw prints on his Instagram bio, likely as a nod to the Panthers. Fowler had the same emojis on her account - until she dropped them recently. Ever since they got together, the couple have regularly shared and liked posts from and about each other, but that also changed in the last few weeks. In an unusual move, Mary didn't immediately like Nathan's raw post about the embarrassment he felt after NSW fell to a heavy loss in the Origin decider against Queensland, in which he referenced the 'self-loathing and hurt' that come with defeat. She has since liked that post while she's been Down Under. Dressed casually in training gear, the Matildas and Manchester City star wasn't wearing a brace or any strapping on her injured knee in a sign her rehab is going well The couple also posed for a photo with a fan while they enjoyed some time at a tenpin bowling alley in Sydney within the last week (pictured) Cleary had also dropped the ball when it comes to liking Fowler's posts. He last did so on June 6, when the 22-year-old posted a selection of photos, one of which featured her and Cleary, who commented, 'Must be nice having a personal photographer follow you around.' That was the most recent time Nathan was pictured on her Instagram. She was last pictured on his account on May 13. Last week Fowler seemed to give fans more cause for concern when she posted shots from her current trip to Australia, showing she'd been catching up with her Matildas teammate Lydia Williams, who was with her at Sydney Airport. At the time of writing, Cleary still hasn't liked that post - although that detail has been cast in a completely new light by the new photos. Fowler's last match for Manchester City - in which she ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee - was on April 14, and since then she has been rehabbing the injury during the Women's Super League off-season. Fowler hasn't revealed the reason for her trip to Sydney, but the timing had some fans wondering why she didn't come down a week sooner so she could be there for one of the biggest games of her man's career when NSW tried to win the interstate series. A more cheerful detail to emerge from the most recent photos of Fowler concerns her comeback from the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. Unlike Sam Kerr's recovery from the same setback - which has taken far longer than the year that was originally predicted - Fowler's rehab appears to be going very well. She wasn't wearing a brace on the knee in the photographs taken on Sunday, unlike Kerr, whose joint still needed that support when she went into camp with the Matildas in April, 15 months after rupturing her ACL. Fowler has also posted videos showing her working on her rehab in the gym, featuring her jumping without discomfort in a great sign for fans who are desperate to see her return to the field. 'I have recently made a conscious effort to think that I don't have like a bad knee that needs to be fixed, but I'm getting an upgrade and I'm getting an even better knee,' she said last month.

Women's football: Pakistan hopes to kick off new era

Ask one of the 255 million people in Pakistan to name their favourite sport, and most will say many will say football, and even fewer will say women's that's all about to change, according to new Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) president Syed Mohsin Gilani."We want to promote mass participation of girls in football," he the PFF previously suspended by governing body Fifa, the country's national women's team had been quiet on the world stage, playing only three games in the past two those hoping to drive the game forward in Pakistan have been looking further afield to find talented players to boost its profile, such as defender Layla former Birmingham City player tells BBC Newsbeat that Pakistan's football setup "isn't the best at the moment"."But hopefully that's going to change," she says. Layla made history when, aged 16, she became the first-ever South Asian woman to play for Birmingham City, something that she hopes can inspire others."You don't really see many players in the WSL [Women's Super League] from a South Asian heritage," she says."I feel like I want to be the person that people can see and show others that you can play football."Layla is currently a free agent after leaving the Blues at the end of last season, and recently made her debut for the Pakistan women's national played in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women's Asian Cup qualifiers, where the side finished as runners-up."Pakistan contacted me a couple years ago but I felt like it wasn't the right time and I felt like this was the right time," she says."It was an amazing experience and I'd do it all over again."She is half-Pakistani, so when it came to choosing between England or Pakistan she says "it wasn't even a thought, I'm proud of where I'm from"."It wasn't really a debate," she says. Joining the squad alongside her is 21-year-old Mariam Mahmood, a former West Bromwich player. "When they called me up, I was really happy," she says."To know they know about me from the other side of the world is crazy."Mariam didn't have the same experience as Layla from her extended family when she decided to pursue football. "They were just like: 'Pakistani girls don't play football, they don't do sport and that it's not a career path'."But, you can't let culture hold you back, you have to follow your heart," she says. Layla and Mariam join four other diaspora players in the national side, and PFF present Syed Mohsin Gilani is happy to have them. "Anybody who's eligible for Pakistan should play for Pakistan, it's doesn't matter where you live or where you're from," he tells Newsbeat. The battle now will be to focus on developing players at home."We want to have more women's football clubs and we are setting a functioning women's football department in the federation," says president Gilani. "We want to take it all over the country."The federation also plans to launch new competitions aimed at women and girls, he says. Layla says the PFF will need to do a lot of work to raise awareness and get young girls into football."It needs to be in schools, it needs to be in the local communities and there needs to be access to it," she says. She also wants to see more girls from a South Asian Muslim background coming through "into the academies, into the systems and into Pakistan's football team". Nathan Cleary and Mary Fowler appear to put break-up speculation to rest with one heartwarming photograph

Aussie sporting power couple Nathan Cleary and Mary Fowler appear to have put speculation about their relationship to rest after a heartwarming picture of the pair appeared online last week. Rumours have been circulating that their relationship might be on the rocks after Fowler jetted back Down Under to catch up with her family and friends. Cleary, 27, who usually meets her at the airport, was nowhere to be seen as she touched down in Australia. In recent months, the injured Manchester City star has stopped sharing pictures of her beau on social media, and so too has Cleary. It comes as a surprise as the pair, who first went public with their relationship in 2023, have regularly shared snaps of each other online. Cleary has also not liked any of Fowler's posts since June 6, with the Manchester City star publishing a telling suite of images on Tuesday, showing her being dropped off at the airport by Matildas team-mate Lydia Williams. The couple have, though, met up over the past week. Fowler, who is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, called in at Cleary's house on Friday. However, upon leaving the home, she had appeared to cut a tense figure. But in a new update, the pair appear to have put some of the speculation around their relationship to rest after they were pictured enjoying an evening out at a bowling alley last week. During the evening, the couple stopped to take pictures with a Penrith fan. The image was posted on the Ability Hub Services Instagram account, with the couple smiling as they posed for a picture with the fan, who was wearing a Panthers jersey. It comes after she added fuel to the rumours that their relationship might be on the rocks. Fowler took to instagram to publish multiple telling images, alongside the caption 'Free art'. Several videos were included in the post of her looking out of a plane window. She added a shot of a rainbow curving across the sky as well as an image of Williams' dog. Williams commented on the Instagram post, saying: 'Building the band marathon,' an apparent reference to the new Netflix reality series in which contestants compete to form the next big global music group. Cleary, meanwhile, has kept somewhat of a low profile since New South Wales suffered defeat in this year's State of Origin series. The footy star underwhelmed during the final State of Origin clash at the Accor Stadium, with NSW going on to be thumped by Queensland. Fowler added some fuel to the rumours earlier this week posting a telling set of pictures on Instagram He took to social media to write: 'Failure is filled with embarrassment, self-loathing and hurt. It is also a test of character and in amongst that test is a chance to stand up, face it, learn from it and get better... We move onwards and upwards. Thank you to all those who support me unconditionally.' Fowler, who was last pictured on his account on May 13, did not like the post and wasn't present during this year's State of Origin series. During her time Down Under, Fowler appears to have headed back to Queensland to spend some time with her family. She published a heartwarming reel of herself and her mum showcasing their makeup routine. Th 22-year-old was unable to return home to Australia following the conclusion of the Women's Super League season after the Man City star was forced to undergo surgery on her ACL injury, which she sustained during her side's Women's FA Cup semi-final defeat by rivals Manchester United. She has since been keeping her followers updated on her recovery, posting snaps of herself in the gym, while also posting an image of her knee on Instagram, showing how well the scars have healed. Fowler is unlikely to return to action until next year, with concerns mounting over whether she will be able to play in the Asian Cup next March. And it appears her recovery is going very well. 'I have recently made a conscious effort to think that I don't have like a bad knee that needs to be fixed, but I'm getting an upgrade and I'm getting an even better knee,' she said last month. de and I'm getting an even better knee,' she said last month.
