Shoppers react to Christmas stock spotted in shops in June

Glasgow Times15-06-2025
And it's not only Christmas items on sale in June that have caused a stir, but 'spooky season' Halloween stuff is also gradually appearing in shops.
A post on the Facebook group Extreme Bargains and Savings UK got people talking this week, as a picture of Christmas sweets was posted in Home Bargains.
While some shoppers were annoyed by the idea that Christmas had come early, others believed it was a sensible way of planning ahead.
One person commented: 'This must be a wind up!'
Another added: 'I don't want to think of Christmas just yet. It's only June.'
'Taking the p***,' another said.
'Omg like it's only June! What the hell,' one shocked user commented.
But others thought it was a good idea for budgeting, stating: 'Only 29 weeks until Christmas, that's only seven monthly wage packets left.'

While one person commented: 'Some people can only afford to buy a little at a time, leaving them having to start buying as soon as it's over. It's never too early.'
Facebook users also remarked on other stores that they've spotted Christmas and Halloween stock in months in advance.
One person added: 'Went to HomeSense/ TK Maxx yesterday…it was flooded with Halloween - have to admit though it's kind of exiting to know spooky season is around the corner.'
'I saw some Christmas stuff in Poundland today,' another added.

When should you start planning for Christmas?
While some people may find it a little strange to plan so far in advance, many people turn their thoughts to Christmas at the end of August, experts say.
House & Garden says: 'There's no doubt that preparing for Christmas (especially if you're hosting), can be a lot of work. The key, however, is organisation.
'If you get a few things booked in September and October, and then a few jobs checked off the list each week in November and December, the whole thing will feel like a breeze.'

Meta buys £2.6bn stake in Rayban maker Essilor Luxottica amid VR sunglasses push

Meta has bought a £2.6billion stake in Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica as the tech giant continues to push its virtual reality sunglasses. The owner of Facebook has snapped up just under 3 per cent of the £100billion Franco-Italian group and is considering further investments which could see its share boosted to 5 per cent, Bloomberg reported. The pair have worked together since 2019 and launched Meta smart glasses, which cost around £300 and allow users to take photos and videos, listen to music, make calls and livestream. Around 2m pairs of Meta Ray-Bans have been sold since late 2023, according to EssilorLuxottica boss Francesco Milleri in February. The group plans to boost annual production to 10m by the end of 2026. And the firms are planning to soon sell smart glasses under the Oakley and Prada brands. Ray-Bans are famously worn by Tom Cruise in Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

Meta opens Cambridge lab as part of AI glasses expansion

Facebook owner Meta has opened a new audio research lab in Cambridge as part of the tech giant's push into AI glasses. Bosses at Meta met Chancellor Rachel Reeves on Wednesday morning as they launched the £12 million facility. It came amid reports the Facebook and Instagram owner has purchased a minority stake in Oakley and Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica SA, the world's largest eyewear business. It is reported the company's stake will be worth around three billion euros (£2.6 billion) and be worth just under 3% of the Paris-based business. Meta has outlined plans to rapidly grow its AI glasses business, with Ray-Ban Meta and recently announced Oakley Meta products. The Silicon Valley business said its expansion plans in this area have seen it invest in the new audio research lab in Cambridge, designed to 'advance spatial audio and machine learning for Meta's future AI glasses'. The facility includes 'reverb rooms and ultra-quiet acoustic chambers' in order to hone the audio quality of its products under development. Meta employs more than 5,500 people across its UK operations. Joel Kaplan, chief global affairs officer for Meta, met Ms Reeves at the site and underlined the group's commitment to investing in the UK. Mr Kaplan said: 'Creating this world-class audio lab in Cambridge is a sign of our long-term commitment to the UK and our belief in the top engineering talent it produces. 'We want the brightest minds to make sure our smart glasses have the smartest AI-powered audio so you can focus on what you're listening to no matter what's going on around you. 'I can't wait to experience the results of the work the lab produces.' Ms Reeves said: 'Meta's investment is a huge vote of confidence in the UK as a hub for world-leading research and innovation while helping to supercharge the potential in the Oxford to Cambridge growth corridor. 'We want our high-tech industries to continue to lead the world in years to come which is why we're backing our innovators, researchers and entrepreneurs with a record £22 billion in R&D (research and development) funding, creating the opportunity for good jobs and investment in Britain, and delivering on our plan for change.'
