Nick Loftin single produces walk-off win for Royals over Mets

Reuters13-07-2025
July 13 - Kansas City rookie Noah Cameron matched a career high with eight strikeouts while pitching into the seventh, but the Royals needed Nick Loftin's walk-off RBI single in the ninth to win 3-2 over the visiting New York Mets on Sunday.
New York trailed 2-0 entering the ninth against All-Star Royals closer Carlos Estevez (4-2). Ronny Mauricio led off with a liner that left fielder Loftin misread and ended up as a double. Pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil followed with an RBI triple that nearly left the park and eventually scored on Jared Young's sacrifice fly to tie the contest.
However, after rookie Tyler Tolbert singled for just his second career hit and stole second in the Royals' ninth, Loftin atoned for his defensive gaffe. He sent a pitch from Sean Manaea (0-1) into left field to break the tie and salvage the finale after Kansas City dropped the first two of this set.
Cameron, meanwhile, continued the stellar start to his major-league career since debuting April 30. The left-hander recorded his seventh quality start while yielding seven hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings to lower his ERA to 2.31 in 12 big-league starts.
New York's Clay Holmes allowed only John Rave's two-run double in the second and four other hits, plus a walk, over five innings.
Then Manaea came on in the sixth for his season debut after dealing with a lengthy oblique issue. Despite taking the loss, the left-hander was solid, allowing the one run and five hits while striking out seven without a walk over 3 1/3 innings and 65 pitches.
Kansas City put runners on second and third with one out in the second inning. After going 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position through the first two games of the set, Rave, who entered batting .167 with four RBIs in 34 career games, laced a double down the right-field line that scored the game's first two runs.
The start to Sunday's contest was delayed a little more than 40 minutes because of rain.

Tigers hope rookie Troy Melton can provide spark vs. Pirates

July 23 - The Detroit Tigers are looking for something to break them out of their recent struggles. They will turn to prospect Troy Melton, who will make his major league debut on Wednesday afternoon against the host Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series. Melton, the Tigers' No. 10-ranked prospect per will oppose Pirates lefty Bailey Falter (6-5, 4.00 ERA) as Detroit attempts to regroup from a stretch of eight losses in its past nine games. The Pirates will try to secure their fourth three-game series sweep of the season. They have won nine of their past 12 home games. Whether it's one time or multiple starts for Melton, the Tigers would like to get a good look at their 24-year-old right-hander, who compiled a 2.72 ERA with 56 strikeouts and nine walks in 36 1/3 innings for Triple-A Toledo. Before being promoted, Melton recorded a 3.23 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 11 walks in 39 innings over 10 starts for Double-A Erie. Melton, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft by the Tigers out of San Diego State, has an opportunity to perhaps secure a spot in the rotation or as a long reliever down the stretch for a Detroit squad that still holds a comfortable lead in the American League Central despite its recent struggles. The Tigers' current rotation consists of Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Reese Olson, Casey Mize and Keider Montero. "We've been monitoring him the last few starts," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said of Melton on Monday. "His stuff has gotten better. His fastball command has gotten better. The punchouts have been there." Falter had a spectacular month of May when he went 3-0 with a 0.76 ERA in six starts. Since then, he has gone 2-2 with a 5.60 ERA in eight starts (35 1/3 innings). Over his three July starts, Falter is 0-2 with a 6.28 ERA, having allowed 11 runs (10 earned) in 14 1/3 innings. He yielded seven home runs in those three games after allowing nine over his first 17 starts. In his most recent start, on Friday in the Pirates' first game after the All-Star break, Falter surrendered four runs on six hits, including two home runs, walked one and struck out two over four innings in a 10-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Falter faced the Tigers for the first time on June 17 at Detroit. He gave up three runs on five hits, including two home runs, walked one and struck out four over five innings. "(He needs to) continue to be committed to his fastball. Pitching in and pitching up is his go-to," Pirates manager Don Kelly said. "Finding ways to attack the strike zone, getting ahead. Makes it really tough as a pitcher whenever you're behind in a count. We have to be ahead, and we've done a good job of that for most of the year." Javier Baez, who returned to Detroit's lineup on Tuesday after missing one game with a sore left shoulder, has two home runs in three career at-bats against Falter. --Field Level Media

Marlins throw another righty (Sandy Alcantara) at Padres

July 23 - The San Diego Padres' lineup is getting tested in the series against the host Miami Marlins. San Diego prevailed 2-1 in a game started by Miami's Eury Perez on Monday but lost to Edward Cabrera 4-3 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Padres will face their third straight hard-throwing right-hander as Sandy Alcantara -- the National League's 2022 Cy Young Award winner -- takes the mound. Padres manager Mike Shildt, though, remains confident in his hitters. "I think our approach at the plate can carry us every night," Shildt said on Tuesday. "It's something we've addressed. It's about taking a quality at-bat." Alcantara (4-9, 7.14 ERA) is 2-2 with a 4.04 ERA in six career starts against the Padres, and he pitched poorly in a no-decision at San Diego on May 28. He yielded six runs on seven hits in four innings, walking four and failing to record a strikeout for only the third time in his career. The 29-year-old right-hander has struggled this season after missing last year following elbow surgery. The Marlins are 8-11 when Alcantara starts. In 2022, Miami went 19-13 when he got the ball. As for Miami's bullpen, it has been surprisingly good, led by Anthony Bender (1.91 ERA), Cade Gibson (2.59) and Ronny Henriquez (3.00). Marlins manager Clayton McCullough had praise for Henriquez, who gave up two runs in the ninth inning on Tuesday but held on for his sixth save. "That was great for Ronny," McCullough said of Henriquez, who is in his first year with the Marlins. "We've put him in a variety of situations, and he continues to be a key cog." Miami placed backup outfielder Derek Hill on the injured list on Wednesday due to a sprained left middle finger. He joins a lengthy list of injured Marlins, but the team has been playing solid baseball for more than a month, going 22-12 in the past 34 games. The Padres will look to bounce back on Wednesday behind Dylan Cease (3-9, 4.64 ERA), who is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two career starts against Miami. The right-hander will be starting just two days short of the one-year anniversary of his no-hitter against the Washington Nationals. Cease is coming off a scoreless outing vs. the Nationals on Friday, when he pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up just four hits and no walks while striking out 10. That contest followed a three-start streak in which Cease lost each time and pitched to a 7.31 ERA. He has registered six quality starts in 20 outings this year, but his most recent quality start came on June 21. The Padres are 3-2 on their current 10-game road trip, during which Luis Arraez has rediscovered his stroke. The three-time batting champion, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI single on Tuesday, is 8-for-20 (.400) while hitting safely in all five games on the trip. Arraez had gone 1-for-20 in the final five games before the All-Star break. His average is still just .286, which would be the lowest of his career. --Field Level Media

Venus Williams, 45, confirms engagement to actor partner, 37, as she rolls back years to win first match in TWO YEARS

VENUS WILLIAMS rolled back the years last night to win for the first time since August 2023. The seven-time Grand Slam champion, 45, surprisingly accepted a wildcard to return in Washington DC this week. 7 7 Williams last played at Miami in March 2024 and did not have a single ranking point going into this week. The WTA Tour veteran looked like she'd never been away as she defeated world No35 Peyton Stearns, 22 years her junior, 6-3 6-4 in front of a raucous night session crowd. In doing so, Williams became the second-oldest woman to ever win a singles match at tour level, only behind Martina Navratilova, who did so at 47-years-old. The American legend won her first tour-level match 31 years ago, aged just 14. After her historic triumph, Williams revealed on court that she is engaged to actor partner Andrea Preti. The tennis icon said: "My fiance is here and he really encouraged me to keep playing. "There were so many times where I just wanted to coast and kind of chill. Do you know how hard it is to play tennis? "You guys don't know how much work goes into this, like it's 9 to 5 except you're running the whole time. He's never seen me play." Williams is also playing the doubles event in DC this week. Partnering Hailey Baptiste, Williams beat Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6-3 6-1 to advance to round two. Speaking about partnering Baptiste, Williams poked fun at her retired sister Serena. She said: "I think from the first point I could see that we were going to be a good team. "We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way." Williams and Baptiste will be back in action later today, as they take on No2 seeds Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai in the quarter-finals. The veteran will then return again for the singles tomorrow, taking on Poland's Magdalena Frech. Williams has entered the revamped US Open mixed doubles event, which also featured Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, alongside pal Reilly Opelka. The two-time US Open champion could also look for a singles wildcard at Flushing Meadows. 7 7
