Kevin Walters in telling move for son Billy after ugly fallout at Brisbane Broncos

Yahooa day ago
Kevin Walters has taken a giant step in repairing his relationship with the Brisbane Broncos after returning to the club as a special guest for his son Billy's 100-game milestone. Walters was left gutted after being axed as Broncos coach at the end of last season, replaced by Michael Maguire despite still having two years remaining on his contract.
Walters is a legend of the club after winning five premierships with the Broncos as a player and coming within a whisker of claiming another one as Brisbane's coach in the 2023 grand final defeat to Penrith. But a disappointing 2024 season led to a highly contentious axing that left many Broncos greats fuming about how the club had treated one of their own.
After moving into a media role with Fox League this year, Walters put aside any potential bad blood with the Broncos after making a guest appearance at Red Hill alongside Maguire this week, to celebrate his son's 100th game for the club. In a promising sign the former coach is ready to move on from his axing, Walters presented Billy with his Broncos jersey ahead of Friday night's milestone game against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.
'It was really good... I have known him (Billy) for four or five years now and to see a player play 100 games is pretty special," Maguire told about the special moment between father and son. 'We always talk about playing one game, let alone 100, but I've been able to have a few of the boys with Adam Reynolds' 300th and Jordan Riki's 100th.
"Now we have another one, so it's good to see the experience is within the team. Kevvie came in and spoke really well. It was nice to see a father and son together which was really special.'
Walters' axing by the Broncos is clearly still a prickly issue, with former teammate Gorden Tallis grilling Brisbane CEO Dave Donaghy recently about the contentious move. Maguire has come under fire over Brisbane's patchy form in 2025 but he has turned things around in recent weeks, with the Broncos claiming three-straight wins to jump into fifth on the ladder.

Before their great escape against the Sharks in round 16 though, Brisbane were actually travelling worse under Maguire than at the same stage the previous year under Walters. And Donaghy's response to a question about whether it was the right call to sack Walters, didn't go down too well with Tallis.
"We made an incredibly difficult decision, and that's the reality of it," Donaghy said on Triple M. "Kevvie is a great of our club and he put his heart and soul into the place for four years." Tallis interjected to take issue with the 'four years' reference, considering Walters has been a huge part of the club for more than 30 years, since making his playing debut in 1990.
Donaghy responded: "Sorry Gordie, 30 years. He did four years as the coach and did a wonderful job and was there for a long, long time. We want to ensure we're acknowledging that and recognising that. But we did feel it was time for a change and we do feel like it was the right decision."

The day NSW's star of the future blew Cleary away

NSW have earmarked Isaiya Katoa as Nathan Cleary's successor by calling him into camp for State of Origin III, but the incumbent still remembers the day eight years ago when he first realised just how elite the young gun would become. It comes as Brian To'o and Payne Haas once again trained separately from their teammates on Saturday, the final day of NSW's Blue Mountains camp for the decider on July 9. Monday's session at Accor Stadium looms as judgement day for To'o, who needed ice and a brace on his knee after hurting himself playing for Penrith in round 17. But NSW teammates are confident Haas (back) and To'o will both play after they overcame previous injuries to respectively star in Origin I and II. "'Bizza' showed he didn't do much training last game and you've seen the performance he put in," said winger Zac Lomax. "I don't think there are too many questions around that (his recovery) because he's done it and he's performed for us." Long before he was the Dolphins halfback setting the NRL alight, a 13-year-old Katoa accompanied his brother to Penrith headquarters during the off-season. A hooker who played 75 NRL games, Sione Katoa was reporting for an informal training session with Cleary and a handful of other Panthers teammates. The younger Katoa, barely a teenager much less an adult, ran rings around the group of NRL pros, which included Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Viliame Kikau. "We were doing 3 on 2 drills and he was carving it up. I was like, I've never seen someone at this age do that sort of stuff," said Blues halfback Cleary. "I'd already heard of him, there were raps on him since he was real young. But then just to see him, I was like, it's not normal for a 13-year-old kid to be doing this." It's a fair appraisal from Cleary, a generational talent who grew up playing alongside current NSW five-eighth Jarome Luai - himself rated a top-tier junior talent. Katoa received his first call into NSW camp last week, spending two days around the Blues at their Leura hideaway ahead of the decider in Sydney on July 9. Luai's estimations of Katoa only rose for reuniting with the young superstar, who had been in Penrith's junior system while Luai was at the club. Four-time premiership winner Luai admits he's a little intimidated by the thought of facing Katoa at Wests Tigers, and felt he was "definitely" an Origin star of the future. "It's scary, you're going to have to go up against that in clubland soon. Hopefully he doesn't go that well against you," Luai said. "Obviously his ability to play, his potential and all that, but just the way he speaks, the way he carries himself, the way he interacts with the boys as well. "It's just like, how mature is this guy and how high is his ceiling?" Cleary has been pondering that question for the last eight years. He has been floored by what Katoa has achieved lifting the Dolphins into finals calculations, with the expansion side averaging a tick under 46 points across their last five games. "He's probably my favourite player to watch in the comp at the moment, just what he's able to do," Cleary said. "Just his subtlety is incredible, especially for such a young guy. "People at the top of their game would be happy with what he's doing but he's only 21. It's quite incredible what he's doing."

The British and Irish Lions' summer tour of Australia takes to Sydney as they take on the Waratahs in their next warm-up match. Andy Farrell's tourists are two games into their Australasian adventure, and are two wins from two. Advertisement They defeated the Western Force 54-7 in Perth before an 52-12 win over the Queensland Reds in Brisbane, where they were given an almighty first-half scare as Les Kiss' side went in front twice. Despite failing to truly convince in both of those matches, the squad cohesion will only improve with the more games they play, and the Waratahs, coached by Dan McKellar, are next up. Farrell has called up his son Owen Farrell - to mixed reception - in the wake of Elliot Daly's broken arm that he suffered against the Reds, but this game will come too soon for him. However, it will be a chance for the Lions head coach to shuffle his pack once more and make those tough decisions as to who starts the first test against Australia in Brisbane in two weeks' time. Bulldogs set to lose another player to rival club as Lachie Galvin fallout continues

Lachie Galvin's signing continues to have repercussions at the Canterbury Bulldogs, with hooker Reed Mahoney set to follow halfback Toby Sexton out the door at the end of the season. Confirmation of Sexton's exit came on Thursday night when the Catalans Dragons announced he would be joining the English Super League club from 2026 to replace Roosters and Rabbitohs premiership hero, Luke Keary. And following Canterbury's dramatic second half collapse against the Broncos on Friday, it's since emerged that off-contract Bulldogs hooker Mahoney will also depart the club at the end of the current season. According to reports from , Mahoney has signed a three-year deal with North Queensland from the 2026 season, continuing the shake-up at the Bulldogs after Galvin's recruitment. Mahoney's move to the Cowboys next season will see him replace Blues Origin hooker Reece Robson, who signed a four-year deal with the Roosters from 2026. And it paves the way for versatile forward Bailey Hayward to stamp his claim as the Bulldogs' long-term No.9. Canterbury had refused to guarantee whether Mahoney would remain at the club beyond this year and the signing of Galvin further clouded the No.9's future. Mahoney showed his frustrations after being benched in the second half of Galvin's first game for the Bulldogs, and there have been rumblings for weeks that Canterbury were prepared to move on from the former Parramatta No.9. Mahoney is a renowned agitator and has had his fair share of on-field disciplinary issues at the Dogs, since joining from the Eels. But he's also been a key part of the Bulldogs' resurgence over the last couple of seasons. Since Galvin's arrival at Canterbury though, Mahoney has been the man to make way for the young recruit, with coach Cameron Ciraldo shifting Sexton to hooker and playing Galvin in the halves when he's come off the bench. RELATED: Cleary calls for NRL to make big change after issue that dudded Panthers Teammate follows Cobbo out of Broncos as Roosters lose star's brother Ciraldo opted to start with all three players in Friday night's defeat to the Broncos, with Sexton and Galvin sharing playmaking duties and regular No.6 Matt Burton shifting to centre in the absence of Blues Origin pair Stephen Crichton and Jacob Kiraz. But the move failed to pay dividends and only threw up more questions around Canterbury's halves conundrum as Galvin and Sexton failed to gel with their backline and close out the game after leading 18-0. Galvin and Sexton played on both sides of the ruck but the Bulldogs were constantly guilty of pushing too many passes and searching for points in the 22-18 defeat. And it leaves Ciraldo with a big decision to make around his star recruit, with Galvin's arrival coinciding with a slide in form for the Dogs, who have now lost two games in a row to give up top spot on the ladder. Ciraldo admitted he was filthy with his side after they squandered an 18-point lead against the fast-finishing Broncos, who scored four tries in the final 20 minutes to snatch victory after a masterclass from Brisbane playmaker Ezra Mam. The Bulldogs were guilty of overplaying their hand in attack, with Galvin particularly struggling to find cohesion with Burton on Canterbury's left edge. "We were trying to land knockout punches when we got some good ball," Ciraldo said after the game. "The Broncos were defending well, and I think we just got frustrated and handed the ball over way too cheaply. We were trying to force it too much." 'I don't think our attack has reached its potential all year, so we're searching for that, as most clubs are... We've got nine or 10 weeks to go to figure that out, but you've got to learn your lessons quickly. We didn't learn ours from last week and take those into tonight.' Burton needs to play 5/8. Galvin should go to Cup and be made to earn his spot. #NRLBulldogsBroncos — All Things Opinionated 🏳️‍🌈 (@ATOpinionated) July 4, 2025 Tigers fans loving this display from Galvin. He should watch some tape of Mam and learn how to pass. #NRLBulldogsBroncos — Garrick Knight (@GarrickRKnight) July 4, 2025 Galvin. Gee wiz.
