Footy legend Steve Renouf's stunning statement to cops is revealed as he learns his fate after driving while almost four times over the limit

NRL great Steve Renouf told police 'you've got me, I'm drunk' after being caught driving almost four times over the blood alcohol limit, a court has heard. The Brisbane Broncos legend has apologised over the incident after being fined and having his licence disqualified on Wednesday, earlier tabling a character reference from his former coach Wayne Bennett. The 55-year-old returned a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.197 after being pulled over for a late-night roadside breath test in the Brisbane suburb of Red Hill on July 1, the court heard. Renouf was the vehicle's sole occupant, turning off the car and exiting before being asked by police to sit back down, police prosecutor Kiara D'Odorico said. The prosecutor said Renouf then told officers: 'You've got me, I'm drunk.' The former Queensland flyer was unsteady on his feet, slurring his words and dropped several items on the ground while trying to get his licence, Ms D'Odorico said. Renouf said 'no, no, no' and attempted to walk away after being told he would be detained and subject to further testing. He was handcuffed and taken to a watchhouse for further tests, Brisbane Magistrates Court heard. Defence counsel Angelo Vernados said Renouf had no recollection of the incident after being at a nearby Paddington venue with friends. 'He left the establishment and clearly made the foolish decision of getting into the car,' Mr Vernados told the court. The court heard Renouf suffered a hypoglycaemic episode at the watchhouse as a result of low blood-sugar. Police gave him jelly beans and made a call to Renouf's partner, who provided instructions on how to manage him. Mr Vernados said Renouf had deep remorse, embarrassment and serious reflections about his actions, tabling the character reference from legendary NRL coach Bennett. 'Under no circumstances is this gentlemen seeking special consideration from the court today,' he told the court. 'He's a man of great integrity and been open and honest about the circumstances.' Renouf said he was extremely remorseful for his actions. 'I am a role model. I have been a role model in the community for a long time,' he told reporters outside court. 'It deeply hurts me and I apologise if I've upset anyone that's looked up to me.' Magistrate Judith Daley weighed up the impact a conviction could have on Renouf's travel internationally for work and said to his credit, he had no similar traffic offences. Renouf was fined $1200 and disqualified from driving for 11 months after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of liquor. No conviction was recorded. Renouf played 183 games and scored 142 tries for NRL club Brisbane, claiming four premierships including the Broncos' maiden title in 1992.

Kevin Walters in telling move for son Billy after ugly fallout at Brisbane Broncos

Kevin Walters has taken a giant step in repairing his relationship with the Brisbane Broncos after returning to the club as a special guest for his son Billy's 100-game milestone. Walters was left gutted after being axed as Broncos coach at the end of last season, replaced by Michael Maguire despite still having two years remaining on his contract. Walters is a legend of the club after winning five premierships with the Broncos as a player and coming within a whisker of claiming another one as Brisbane's coach in the 2023 grand final defeat to Penrith. But a disappointing 2024 season led to a highly contentious axing that left many Broncos greats fuming about how the club had treated one of their own. After moving into a media role with Fox League this year, Walters put aside any potential bad blood with the Broncos after making a guest appearance at Red Hill alongside Maguire this week, to celebrate his son's 100th game for the club. In a promising sign the former coach is ready to move on from his axing, Walters presented Billy with his Broncos jersey ahead of Friday night's milestone game against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium. 'It was really good... I have known him (Billy) for four or five years now and to see a player play 100 games is pretty special," Maguire told about the special moment between father and son. 'We always talk about playing one game, let alone 100, but I've been able to have a few of the boys with Adam Reynolds' 300th and Jordan Riki's 100th. "Now we have another one, so it's good to see the experience is within the team. Kevvie came in and spoke really well. It was nice to see a father and son together which was really special.' Walters' axing by the Broncos is clearly still a prickly issue, with former teammate Gorden Tallis grilling Brisbane CEO Dave Donaghy recently about the contentious move. Maguire has come under fire over Brisbane's patchy form in 2025 but he has turned things around in recent weeks, with the Broncos claiming three-straight wins to jump into fifth on the ladder. And Donaghy's response to a question about whether it was the right call to sack Walters, didn't go down too well with Tallis. "We made an incredibly difficult decision, and that's the reality of it," Donaghy said on Triple M. "Kevvie is a great of our club and he put his heart and soul into the place for four years." Tallis interjected to take issue with the 'four years' reference, considering Walters has been a huge part of the club for more than 30 years, since making his playing debut in 1990. Donaghy responded: "Sorry Gordie, 30 years. He did four years as the coach and did a wonderful job and was there for a long, long time. We want to ensure we're acknowledging that and recognising that. But we did feel it was time for a change and we do feel like it was the right decision."

Honolulu water board sues Navy for $1.2B over fuel leak that contaminated drinking water

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Navy, seeking more than $1 billion after the military branch released petroleum and other hazardous chemicals into Oʻahu, Hawaii's sole source of drinking water. During the incident, 27,000 gallons of toxic jet fuel stored in miles of underground tunnels leaked into the aquifer near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, affecting 93,000 people living near the military's strategic fuel storage facility, Red Hill. The Navy acknowledged responsibility for the environmental and human health crisis caused by the November 2021 jet fuel release, though the board alleges it has refused to accept responsibility for the $1.2 billion the BWS will incur to respond to the Navy's contaminant releases. Residents served by the Navy's water system allegedly suffered serious injuries from the incident, and the BWS claimed its ability to provide clean, safe, dependable water to Oʻahu residents continues to be severely impacted, according to a statement from BWS. Fox News Digital previously reported that some residents continue to suffer long-term symptoms, including Parkinson's disease and seizures. To protect against contamination of its own water sources following the spill, BWS shut down its Hālawa Shaft and the ʻAiea and Hālawa wells. It also implemented enhanced water quality testing, started planning for additional groundwater monitoring wells, and shifted to alternate water sources to make up for lost water supplies. The BWS, a semi-autonomous agency of the City and County of Honolulu, estimates the total cost of restoration, remediation and mitigation efforts at $1.2 billion. Board members said they "have a fiduciary responsibility to minimize the burden of these costs to the Oʻahu ratepayers," and will hold the Navy accountable for its failure to prevent or appropriately respond to the contaminant releases, according to a statement. The BWS told Fox News Digital the suit comes after an administrative Federal Tort Claims Act claim filed in October 2023 was denied by the Navy on Jan. 10 of this year. The statute of limitations for filing the complaint ends on July 10. "This is not an issue that will be solved quickly or cheaply," said BWS manager and chief engineer Ernest Lau. "Every action must be taken to protect the purity of Oʻahu's water, and it is only right that the Navy assume financial responsibility for its actions that put water purity and safety of everyone on Oʻahu at risk and caused harm to the BWS." BWS board chair Nāʻālehu Anthony, added litigation was the board's "last resort." "Litigation was our last resort and comes after months of futile negotiation with the Navy, an attempt to recover costs administratively under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) and the Navy's refusal to pay for any of the costs incurred by BWS, even while the Navy has publicly acknowledged its responsibility for this disaster and subsequent contaminant releases," Anthony said. "Our steadfast commitment to the protection of the purity of Oʻahu's water resources, and our obligation to our ratepayers for responsible fiscal management compelled us to take this action." As the largest water utility in Hawaii, the BWS serves about 1 million customers on O'ahu. In May, a federal judge awarded nearly $700,000 to more than a dozen families who claimed they got sick after the fuel leaked into the Navy drinking water system, according to a report from the Associated Press. More than 7,500 other military family members have pending lawsuits. The Navy did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Footy legend Steve Renouf makes a stunning statement after allegedly getting busted drink driving with a shocking amount of alcohol in his system

Former Maroons centre Steve Renouf says he is 'embarrassed' and has acknowledged that his 'actions are unacceptable' after he was slapped with a drink driving charge, after allegedly being four times over the legal limit. The 55-year-old had been pulled over by Queensland Police officers while driving his Kia on Windsor Road in Red Hill, not far from the Broncos training ground. Police had been set to conduct a routine licence and roadside breath test on the former Brisbane centre, who is the club's all-time leading try scorer, with 142 tries. A statement from Queensland police said: 'It will be alleged, the driver and sole occupant, a 55-year-old Red Hill man returned a positive result.' 'He was transported to Brisbane City Watchhouse, where he returned a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.197 per cent.' The father-of-five was charged with one count of driving while under the influence of liquor and has now had his driving license suspended. The father-of-five released a statement on his Instagram on Wednesday stating that he was remorsefulfor his actions On Wednesday afternoon, Renouf, who was nicknamed 'The Pearl' due to his speed and try-scoring prowess, broke his silence on the matter. 'I accept and acknowledge that my actions are unacceptable,' Renouf, who won 10 caps for the Kangaroos, wrote in a statement on Instagram. 'I have let down my family, the Broncos' fans, the rugby league community, the Queensland public and my mob. 'I am sorry for letting everyone down and am embarrassed and disappointed with my actions. 'I will accept my punishment and will aim to do better.' Renouf, who hung up his boots back in 2001 following a spell in England with Super League club Wigan, was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame last August. The 55-year-old has also been public on his battle with type one diabetes. He was diagnosed at the age of 23 but, in the past, has looked to inspire young people suffering from the illness not to give up on their ambitions of playing sport. Renouf is widely regarded as one of the greats to have graced the game with the 55-year-old remaining top of the Broncos' all-time try scorers list Renouf is not currently employed by the Broncos but has held several jobs in the media since retiring. One of those roles has included working as a commentator for Triple M's Blood, Sweat and Beers show. The news comes two weeks after Melissa Mallet, the Broncos media manager, was charged with high-range drink driving. Mallet allegedly crashed into two parked vehicles in a separate incident on June 2. She has not yet entered a court plea.

Brisbane's next generation are making moves. Now, Walters speaks on his future

Broncos hooker Billy Walters believes he still has a future at Red Hill, despite the club's retention of the man touted as the club's long-term No.9. Walters has swapped with Cory Paix between the starting side and bench since Michael Maguire took the coaching reins from his father, Kevin Walters, and faces an uncertain period as he navigates a tightening dummy-half logjam. While the 31-year-old remains contracted until the end of 2026, he can negotiate with rivals from November 1 – a path he may need to take upon Blake Mozer's extension and Ben Hunt's imminent return from a hamstring injury. 'I actually had a little joke with Mozer the other day that Souths Logan will be cheering that he's signed for another two years,' Walters laughed, before addressing the nature of the internal competition. 'It brings out your best footy, competition – we've got a lot of good nines for the club. It just means I've got to play my best footy, or I'll find myself playing Queensland Cup. Loading 'It's a good position to be in. You can't think too far ahead, you've just got to worry about what's happening now and what's happening this week.' Mozer committed to the Broncos until the end of 2027 last week. However, he has not seen any NRL action this year after suffering a shoulder injury late in the preseason. But the 21-year-old has been earmarked for an extensive career as Brisbane's dummy-half, while 19-year-old Cameron Bukowski – signed on a development deal this year – has shown impressive signs at Wynnum Manly.
