ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 24 (Bernama) -- Johor continues to strengthen its position as the leader in the agricultural sector when it successfully recorded the highest sales value of RM27.2 billion last year.
State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip said the amount involved sales of crop sub-sector of RM20.9 billion, livestock (RM4.7 billion), aquaculture (RM1 billion) and fisheries (RM7 million).
"Johor continues to strengthen its position as a leader in the country's agricultural sector when it successfully recorded the highest sales value based on the latest statistics from the interim findings of the 2024 Agricultural Census by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
"This achievement not only reflects the fundamental strength of the agricultural sector in Johor, but is also the result of strategic planning and collaboration, the implementation of comprehensive policies and close cooperation between the state government and the federal government, implementing agencies, investors and all entrepreneurs who are the backbone of the development of this sector.
He told reporters after chairing the Johor State Food Security Working Committee Meeting at Dato' Jaafar Muhammad Building Operations Room here today.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) which has channeled an allocation of RM23.4 million as support to strengthen the implementation of various high-impact initiatives and programmes.
Meanwhile, he said the state government is formulating several strategies to ensure that players in the agriculture and food security sector are not left out of the rapid development trend in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
He said a series of workshops and engagement sessions are being implemented to comprehensively discuss protection and support measures for agricultural sector entrepreneurs so that they remain relevant in the state's long-term development plan.
He said that as an initial step, Johor is driving several high-impact projects including the development of modern agricultural activities such as 'vertical farming' between a local company and a company from Singapore.

Ringgit ends lower as trade deal hopes dim ahead of US tariff deadline

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar today, as fading hopes of a trade deal ahead of the upcoming US tariff deadline weighed on investor sentiment. At 6 pm, the local note depreciated to 4.2245/2305 versus the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.1995/2005. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the ringgit, which had enjoyed solid momentum in recent weeks, is now facing headwinds as markets brace for the July 9 tariff deadline, with US President Donald Trump making it clear there will be no extension. "With the deadline fast approaching, markets are shifting into defensive mode. "Asia foreign exchange market feels like it is trading in the dark - nervous, reactive, and unsure where the next blow will come from,' he told Bernama. Innes said that Trump's tough stance on Japan, particularly over rice and autos, has further fuelled regional tension, while his softened tone on India remains wrapped in diplomatic vagueness. "Until clearer signals emerge, the market is expected to remain light on conviction and heavy on caution,' he added. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It eased versus the British pound to 5.7859/7941 from 5.7797/7866, and fell against the euro to 4.9748/9818 from 4.9566/9625 yesterday. However, it appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9316/9360 from 2.9351/9389. The local note was also traded lower against its ASEAN counterparts. It slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.9/260.5 from 258.9/259.4, weakened against the Philippine peso to 7.49/7.51 from 7.45/7.46, shed vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3167/3217 from 3.3015/3059, and declined against the Thai baht to 13.0233/0482 from 12.9363/9585 previously. - Bernama

RON97, diesel prices down three sen in Peninsular Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The retail prices of RON97 petrol and diesel in Peninsular Malaysia have been reduced by three sen, now set at RM3.18 and RM2.85 per litre respectively, for July 3 to 9. In a statement on Wednesday (July 2), the Finance Ministry said the retail price of RON95 remains unchanged at RM2.05 per litre, while the price of diesel in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan remains at RM2.15 per litre. The Finance Ministry said the price adjustments are based on the weekly retail pricing of petroleum products, using the Automatic Pricing Mechanism formula. "The government continues to monitor market trends and adjust the retail prices of RON97 and diesel in line with global oil price movements, while supporting price stability," the statement read. The Finance Ministry added that the government will also take appropriate measures to safeguard the welfare and well-being of the people. - Bernama

KOTA KINABALU (July 2): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested four individuals, including two company owners, for allegedly submitting documents with false information related to the procurement of permit to work (PTW) printing services worth RM5 million. According to sources, the suspects, three men and one woman, in their 40s and 50s, were arrested between 6 pm and 7 pm on June 30 when they appeared at the Sabah MACC office to give their statements. 'In addition to the two company owners, the other two suspects – a former administrator and a former assistant administrator of a local oil company – are believed to have committed the offences between 2019 and 2023,' the sources said. 'The two suspects are also believed to have abetted the company owners by submitting false claims related to the procurement of PTW printing services worth RM5 million,' the sources told Bernama. The arrests of all the suspects were made as a follow-up to Op Effingo, conducted by the MACC Special Operations Division. 'On June 30, the division raided 10 locations, including the suspects' residences, offices, and several companies around Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and the Klang Valley,' the sources said. 'The MACC seized 22 bank accounts, including Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) accounts, containing approximately RM2 million; various foreign currencies amounting to RM14,000; three luxury vehicles valued at around RM1.3 million; and three mobile phones. The suspects have been remanded for four days, starting Tuesday, after Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus allowed the MACC application at the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate's Court. MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, when contacted, confirmed the arrests. He said that the individuals will be charged under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, as well as other offences under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.-Bernama
