Customs intercepts RM5.1mil cannabis shipment

False cargo: Rohaizad displaying some of the seized marijuana in rice bags at the Customs office in Perai. — LIM BENG TATT/The Star BUTTERWORTH: A covert enforcement team from the Customs Department discreetly tailed a suspicious vehicle along the North-South Expressway. The officers in unmarked enforcement cars had begun their surveillance at the Jitra toll plaza, patiently following the vehicle. Their break came when the car, after a 80km drive, exited the Sungai Petani (South) toll plaza. They intercepted the vehicle and upon inspection, uncovered a massive haul of cannabis worth more than RM5.1mil. Inside the car were three large sacks, resembling rice bags, each marked with Thai labels and branding. Instead of grain, the bags were stuffed with 49 tightly packed slabs of cannabis, weighing a total of 52kg. Two men in the car, in their 30s, were also detained during the operation on June 29, said Penang Customs Department director Rohaizad Ali. He said initial investigation showed that the drugs had been smuggled from a neighbouring country and were in transit at the time of the bust. 'Four teams were deployed to monitor the suspects' movements. 'We believe their original plan was to exit at the Sungai Dua toll plaza in Penang. 'However, realising they were being followed, they attempted to evade by taking the Sungai Petani exit instead. 'The car they used was a rented vehicle to avoid detection,' he said during a press conference at the department's office in Perai yesterday. Rohaizad said both suspects have since been charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If found guilty, they face either the death penalty or life imprisonment along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Kedah customs seize 34kg of ganja, arrest two brothers at Bukit Kayu Hitam

ALOR STAR: The Kedah Customs Department has seized over 34kg of ganja worth nearly RM190,000 in two separate operations at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex. In the first case, a 48-year-old lorry driver was arrested on June 26 after Customs officers stopped his lorry for inspection at Block E, Import-Export branch of the complex at around 10.10pm. Kedah Customs director Wan Marini Wan Hamzah said a preliminary search found two suspicious boxes hidden behind the driver's seat. "Further checks found transparent plastic packages suspected to contain 18,750g of compressed ganja, with an estimated value of RM57,187," she said in a statement today. She said investigators believe the suspect attempted to smuggle the drugs under the guise of transporting vegetables late at night, assuming Customs officers would not inspect the cargo. Two days later, two brothers, aged 21 and 24, were arrested at the ICQS passenger checkpoint after arriving from a neighbouring country on an express bus. "Officers detected anomalies during a baggage scan. A thorough inspection of their luggage found 15,474.40g of ganja, estimated to be worth RM131,779.43," she said. This included 875.30g of cannabis flower buds in 15 small black plastic-wrapped packages, and another 14,599.10g of ganja in 87 compact packages of various sizes. Wan Marini said the duo attempted to smuggle the drugs into Malaysia using public transport to avoid detection. Both cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of not less than 12 strokes upon conviction.

Customs Dept foils bids to smuggle in 34kg of cannabis

courtesy Royal Malaysian Customs Dept via BERNAMA ALOR SETAR: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department thwarted two attempts to smuggle in 34kg of cannabis in separate operations at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex last month. Kedah Customs director Wan Marini Wan Hamzah said the first operation involved a lorry that was stopped at 10.10pm on June 26 at the ICQS vehicle inspection zone. "Two boxes containing 18.75kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of over RM57,000 were found hidden behind the driver's seat. The driver was immediately detained for further investigation. "The... drugs (were hidden in) a legitimate consignment of vegetables, brought in late at night in hopes of bypassing inspection and securing direct clearance at the border,' she said in a statement on Wednesday (July 23). In the second operation, two brothers travelling on a cross-border express bus were detained at 4.50pm on June 28 while passing through the bus lane at the ICQS checkpoint. "Scans of their luggage revealed tightly packed bundles wrapped in black plastic, suspected to be cannabis. "A total of 15 compressed packets containing cannabis flower weighing 875.3g and 14.59kg of cannabis were seized, with an estimated street value exceeding RM45,200. "All suspects have been detained for further investigation. "The Customs Department urges the public to play an active role in combating smuggling, particularly involving cigarettes, alcohol and drugs, and to refrain from any involvement in such illegal activities,' she said. She added that the people can report such activities by calling the Customs toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-8855 or contacting the nearest Customs office. – Bernama
