Benoni Flying Squad officers back in court for kidnapping, extortion case
Kempton Express reports that the case was postponed to July 8 for the docket and further investigation to be completed.
This follows a previous delay on April 8, when it was revealed in court that the investigating officer was attending training and had yet to finalise the investigation.
The accused officers were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on December 2 last year, just days after an alleged incident involving the extortion of a salon owner at Norkem Mall on November 24.
According to IPID, the three officers approached a 38-year-old salon owner and began questioning her about her business documentation.
She reportedly indicated that all required papers were displayed on the premises. The officers then requested her ID, which she handed over.
It is further alleged that the officers demanded to search her residence.
Once there, they insisted on accessing a safe and demanded cash, reportedly extorting a total of R42 000, although they allegedly demanded R60 000.
The incident was later reported to IPID, which launched an investigation and subsequently arrested the officers.
During their initial court appearance on December 3, each officer was granted R2 000 bail, which was extended again today.
The trio has not yet entered a plea.

Extortion suspect killed in shootout with Eastern Cape police
Police had been investigating an extortion ring that was allegedly claiming protection fees from teachers in the Eastern Cape. Police in the Eastern Cape have killed a man linked to an alleged extortion ring. Officers traced the suspect to an area near Ngqeleni, roughly 50km north of Coffee Bay, where a shootout occurred. Authorities had been investigating an extortion ring that had allegedly been charging teachers monthly protection fees. Suspect killed in shootout Police intercepted the 30-year-old suspect in the Canzibe administrative area at roughly 2pm on Saturday. Police report that the suspect was travelling with a passenger, and after being instructed by officers to stop the vehicle, the suspect opened fire. 'Police returned fire in self defence, fatally wounding the suspect. No police officers were injured during the incident,' confirmed police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana. Officers recovered a 9mm and ammunition, and the unharmed passenger has been taken in for further questioning. 'The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) will investigate the shooting as per standard protocol,' Gantana stated. Alleged extortion of teachers Teachers at Dalibhunga Senior Secondary School in Ngqeleni lodged a complaint on 26 July regarding a gang that was extorting money from them. 'Teachers at the school discovered a threatening note on the premises. The note, allegedly from an extortionist group, demands a monthly protection fee of R1 000 from each teacher,' confirmed Gantana. Provincial police commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso described the alleged crimes as 'an attack on our education system and community stability'. Police are still searching for additional suspects and are urging members of the community to assist authorities with information that could lead to arrests. 'We are treating this threat with the utmost urgency. The organised crime unit is utilising all available resources to identify those responsible,' stated Kupiso. Former Eastern Cape official arrested for using ‘fake' university degree
A former deputy director at the Eastern Cape department of community safety has been arrested for allegedly using a fraudulent university qualification to secure employment within government. The 51-year-old woman was arrested at her home in Gqeberha on Thursday after an investigation by the police's fraud unit, which uncovered she had allegedly submitted a forged degree from Vista University. 'She appeared before the Zwelitsha magistrate's court on the same day. She was released on R2,000 bail.' said Eastern Cape police spokesperson Capt Hazel Mqala. The case has been postponed to August 18 and will be transferred to the East London courts. Mqala said: 'The accused is facing charges of fraud, forgery and uttering and is expected to appear at the East London regional court on her next court date.'

National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, has called on the public to refrain from posting unverified claims after fake reports were circulated online during the last 24 hours, alleging that Boshoga had been found dead. Mathe confirmed that the investigation into the case is ongoing and remains at a very sensitive stage. 'The businessman has not been found alive nor deceased. We therefore call on all social media users to stop the spread of unverified information.' She said that these harmful and unfounded posts have caused unnecessary trauma and panic for Boshoga's loved ones. In March, Boshoga's family pleaded for his safe return following his kidnapping in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion, on November 18 last year. The abduction occurred shortly after the 46-year-old businessman and farmer attended a business meeting in the area. His sister Josie recounted the events of that day, saying her brother had been driven to the meeting by their other brother, Tumi. According to her, Jerry's business partner asked to show him something down the road, and Jerry told Tumi he would be back in 15 minutes. When he didn't return, Tumi tried calling him, but his phone went to voicemail. 'By the time an hour had passed, Tumi grew increasingly worried and contacted Jerry's wife, who had not heard from him either,' Josie said. Just minutes later, the family received a devastating call from Jerry, who was forced by his kidnappers to confirm to his wife that he had been abducted. Josie said the kidnappers warned the family not to involve the police and began demanding ransom payments. 'They contacted us constantly on a private number, demanding a ransom. The initial demand was R60-million, which we could not afford. 'After a while, the ransom was reduced to R25-million and eventually to R10-million.' Despite the family's efforts, they were unable to raise the money, and in February, they began receiving videos showing Jerry being tortured. 'These videos are very insensitive and extremely disturbing. This is torture,' Josie said, adding that some of the footage was even posted on social media. The ordeal has taken a heavy toll on the family. Josie said their elderly parents have been in and out of the hospital and are struggling to cope. She also revealed that she has received threats from the kidnappers after speaking out about the case online. 'I am also scared for my safety, because I have been posting a lot about it on social media because, at this point, I don't know what to do,' she said. Despite the threats, the family has remained determined to raise awareness about the case and continue to appeal for Jerry's safe return. At the time, police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk confirmed that investigations were still underway, but no further details about the progress of the case had been disclosed.
