Life with shot at parole for Springfield man who gunned down mother of his children in 2019
Potito, 56, pleaded guilty to killing Shanike 'Nikki' Roldan, 28, and was sentenced in Hampden Superior Court, Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni announced Wednesday. On the second-degree murder count, Potito got life in state prison, with a chance at parole after 23 years.
For the lesser charges — including having a gun without a license and receiving stolen property — Potito received an additional seven years of incarceration, to be served concurrently with the time in prison for murder.
'This case is a tragic example of how substance use can spiral into unimaginable tragedy. Shanike Roldan was a young woman whose life was taken far too soon. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones as they continue to grieve this loss,' Gulluni said.
On Nov. 3, 2019, at 1:37 a.m., Springfield police were called to School Street, where a woman was unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk. Responding officers found that Roldan had been shot in the head.
She was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where she later died.
Police spoke with a witness who identified Potito as the gunman. Surveillance video also had the crime recorded, in which Roldan was shot at twice from the driver's side of a gray Toyota Avalon. That car turned out to be his mother's sedan.
Potito and Roldan had been in an on-and-off relationship, the DA's office said, and she was the mother of two of his children. Information retrieved from Potito's phone showed that he accused Roldan of infidelity, as well as prostitution.
Rapidfire texts from Potito to Roldan stopped just before the murder.
'Well how about this, I'm going to go home and get my gun and kill you right now if I see you,' Potito's message to Roldan read, according to the DA's office.
Shortly after that message was sent, Roldan was gunned down.
Potito was arrested later that same day at his home, where they recovered a .44-caliber revolver, that had been fired twice.

Woman escapes Mass. home after man tries to kidnap her using dog-walking app, police say
A woman entered the Southbridge Police Department's headquarters last Friday to report an attempted kidnapping — which she escaped moments earlier, police said Thursday. She entered the station at around 8:10 p.m., the department said in a statement. Earlier, she was working for a dog-walking app and was contacted by a woman who asked if she could watch her dogs for a few hours. Mark Miller, 62, of Southbridge, was charged with kidnapping, police said. He was held on cash bail during his arraignment at Dudley District Court on Monday. The dog-sitter arrived at the home but met with a man, Miller, outside before entering the residence, police said. The interior of the home was dark and she did not see any dogs inside. Miller stood in front of the door and asked her to go upstairs, police said. The woman was able to run out of the home and drove to the police headquarters. Migrant father pleads guilty to rape after teen daughter's pregnancy
A Haitian migrant pleaded guilty to a rape charge after a DNA test proved that he was the father of his teenage daughter's baby, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan's office said. The man, who MassLive is not identifying so as not to identify his daughter, pleaded guilty to aggravated rape of a child for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old female victim who was known to him. On Friday, July 11, Judge Kenneth Salinger sentenced the man to 12 to 15 years committed to the Massachusetts Department of Correction. Between September 2023 and May 2024, the man and his daughter were at Marlborough Holiday Inn operating as a migrant shelter in the city, according to meeting minutes for the city's Board of Health. On April 30, 2024, when a school resource officer at the Whitcomb School in Marlborough learned of the 14-year-old girl's pregnancy, she told the school that she had dated a 17-year-old boy and they had had sex. Her pregnancy was confirmed by personnel at a hospital, according to a police report filed in court. The girl was removed from the shelter as the investigation continued, Ryan's office said in a statement. An ultrasound during the investigation found that the time of conception was while the girl and the man were living together in Marlborough, Ryan's office said. After the baby's birth, buccal swabs were done on the girl, the baby and the father and sent to a laboratory. On Jan. 24, the lab determined that the man was not only the girl's father, 'it was also twenty-three trillion times more likely than not that he was the biological father of the victim's baby,' Ryan's office said. The man was arrested one week later and was held without bail before he was indicted on Feb. 19.
